Google Web Accelerator

Its merely software acceleration that optimizes your settings. At least I think thats how it works. With that, it wouldnt be able to actually increase your up/down speeds, merely make them more 'optimized'.

Anybody ever try this? You can get it somewhere from google.com, too lazy to look for it. I speeds up your surfing slightly. It also tells you how much time you've saved. Not that huge, but why not? Well, WHY NOT!?!?!?
Neither of the two questions in that post have been answered.

Your first question doesnt really count towards a why or how about it, so ill ignore it. The second oen though, why it doesnt accelerate things much:

GWA doesnt affect streaming video or mp3's, things that would benefit most from compression before transmission, thus, hey are loaded at the same speed as normal. HTML and other types of files on the other hand, are much smaller, and compressing them does not affect the loading speed much. The rest of what it does is simply caching the pages you view and things of such, which most browsers already do.

I have my firefox settings set up so I save some time, and Im pretty sure that since last night ive saved a bit more than 7.6 minutes.

Wait, you;re saying IE is better than Firefox? Man, are you some kind of stupid. ( And yes, I might get warned for this, but so what) Moderator Action: Flaming - warned. If a warning is "so what", then banning is our alternative option.

Seriourly, if none of the news abotu IE sucking over the last 5 or 6 years have not taught you anything, I dont think nothing much will.

Unless of course, you're using a browser such as Opera, then its a whole different ballgame. While I don't use Opera, I dont dislike it either.

You can instead have bookmarks, bookmarks toolbar, many extensions which work with it, etc.

All that type of software is is a cacher and prefetcher. It stores web pages as you visit them, so they're still on your comp if you go back to them (all web browsers will already do this). Then, while you're actually sitting there reading a web page, the software looks at the embedded links and begins to download the contents of those pages before you actually click the link.

IMO, it's pointless. If you're on dialup, it's a waste because you just don't have the badwidth for the prefetching to work. If you're on any decent broadband connection, you save at most perhaps a tenth of a second per page load, but you have the downsides of
-wasted bandwidth used by the prefetcher
-wasted HDD space with all of the cached items
-another program running in the background eating CPU cycles

I will reply to that post by replying to each sentence individually, like so:
Yes, I know. I know that too. I also know that, which is pretty cool.

Our opinions are different. I'm not. It's better than nothing, because
-don't know how that's a problem
-I've got about 130 GB
-DUAL CORE PROCESSOR BABY!!!

You ever hear of the story about the guy that got cutoff from Comcast when he used too much bandwidth on his unlimited plan?

130 gb can be quickly filled if every day you pull in 50 megs of crap. Plus some of us dont have as big hd's as that ( My laptop only has 40 gigs)

In short, what you're stating is why its better for you, not why its better to use for everyone, or at least majority.

-Many if not most ISP's watch how much bandwidth you use, even if your plan is "unlimited". There have been more than a few people who had their service terminated or got their speeds throttled for using to much bandwidth. IOW, it's rather pointless to waste bandwidth on something like that, not to mention that hogs bandwidth from other comps in your house trying to access the internet at the same time.

-Even if space is irrelevant, it contributes to drive fragmentation and puts the HDD through additional, unneeded wear & tear.

-Even multicore CPUs can easily become become bogged down if you get carefree with background processes. Believe me, I've seen brand new machines with good C2D CPUs that run slower than my dad's old PIII 1Ghz box, because they're so bogged down with brackground trash.

Right now as I post this my processor is at 9% and thats because im watching a youtube video. Im gonna assume that since you're posting now, you have firefox and nothign much else running?

Take a look at your process list. i've got 37 processes running. You have more most likely.

I unlike you, arent trying to warm my room with my computer. If you're running at 60% at idle or near idle, you've got too much crap on your computer.
