GOTM-03 First spoiler: The early game.

Hey guys, long time lurker hear, and very first GOTM ever, so I gave adventurer a try. (My wife has managed to haggle with me down to one civ game a month, so I might as well use the GOTM as the one!).

I am thinking I will be going up to regular class next month, as I did quite well and I am sure the bonuses had alot to do with it.

I will make sure to do something detailed like alot of you have on an event by event deal with sopme screenies fro show, but this is the best I can recount offhand. (And yes, I started my game late in feb, but no reading the forum..)

I settled my first city(kyoto) just to the SW square of the lake. I seen the silk, and I am in the habit of settling ASAP my first citu unless I can see something supersexy on my first warrior/scout movement.

Osaka got settled on the amazing hillplain with the ivory, corn, and dyes in it's soon to be expanding border. Tokyo near the gold, and then Edo to the East near the river bu on the ocean. I was going to put edo to the north on the mountain and chop the heck out of it, but Monty grabbed the spot for his own city first.

Monty to the East, and Hat to the South, I figured I would go after hat right away, but that plan changed after she got quite powerful in the early game. Monty and I tussled, I foget who started it, but I went into axemen production fullspeed, and after alot of unit on unti fighting, I finally managed to push him back and take all but his last 3 citied using my samurai's. I bartered for piece and 2 cities, and then 10 turns late took his last 2 cities. I should mension that hyuana was bribed by me to attack monty early on, and remained a good frined until the late game.

MY army was extremely powerful, and afetr claiming most of the land all the way to the furthest east water inlet, knights became available and I could afford to build them from the east, and they were fast enough to send west to hit on hat. I pumped as fast as I could for a long time, and then upgraded them all to cavalry the second I could. Cats, cavalry, and grendiers made work of the egyptians, and soon they were as good as a memory.

I GUESS THIS IS THE PART IF YOU DON;T WANT TO KNOW WHAT I DID PAST THE CAVALRY/GRENADIER AGE, DO NOT READ FURTHER?

Anyways, I had enough military to spread some defense around the egyptian cities close to saladin. Him and I were always close. Hyuana and Asoka both like me as well. Vic, on the other hand, not so much. Alot of time past, and I entered the tech race. Salasin and Vic had a defensive pact, and this worried me, so I grabbed a pact with Saladin as well. I am wondering if maybe I should've gone defensive with hyuana and asoka if possible, and then tries a little 3 on 2?? ANYWAYS.........
.....
..........no more war for me, although vic really hates me. I arrogantly made demands ona regular basis til I hiut the 10 mark, hoping she might attack me and caus myself and saladin to team up, but no dice. hyuana is really starting to get bossy, although his military isn;t backing it up. I refuse to stop trading with whomever, and refuse to give him nice techs all the time, and soon he is cautious to me rather than friendly.

spaceship parts are being built in india!!!! I haven;t even started the apollo!!!!

I get the tech, and build apollo, and start my ship, but when I can build the UN, I rush it with most of the cash I had. (4700 I think on second turn). I have more than 50% of the votes, and declare myself the secretary general right away. I try for diplomatic, and am quite amazed that hyuana abstains.... NO!!!!!

Asoka votes for me, Saladin and Vic vote for vic, with hyuana keeping quiet.

I notice that saladin has a +6 with vic for being his sister of the faith(buddhists). He is friendly with both of us, so I go for free religion on my next shot and it succeeds.

I was quite surprised when I went for diplomatic victory again, and saladin switched to supporting me! I was sure he would just abstain, and I would have to settle for a spaceship victory possibly.

Anyways, I won my first dip victory ever, on my first prince game, and my first GOTM, however, I don;t think I will play adventurer class next month.

Going for Diplomatic Victory.

Quick Start Challenge

I moved the settler SW,SW and built the Kyoto on the plains hill. It was painful seeing those bonus resources one tile outside the border, but the 2 floodplains were all I really needed.
Spoiler Kyoto fully improved :

Kyoto build order:
Warrior
Worker
Warrior
Warrior
Worker (chop rush)
Warrior
Settler (chop rush)
Granary
Worker
Library

Osaka build order:
Obelisk
Worker (chop rush)
Oracle (chop rush)

I completed the CS slingshot in 840BC. Osaka switched to GPP mode to get my first Great Scientist, and Kyoto went for commerce.

Those 4 workers stayed busy. By 1AD they had chopped 5 more settlers, 3 more workers, and were halfway to completing the Hanging Gardens. I would have loved to build the Pyramids, but not at the cost of giving up all those workers and settlers.

Once the 7-city ring was in place, my expansion was finished for the rest of the game. I focused on cottages everywhere and science buildings to support the cottages. The fun part about closely spaced cities is I never had to build Courthouses, and after Currency I could afford 80-100% science!

I used a very small military for the early game, strategically placed to eliminate barbarian spawning. After expansion was over I had a city constantly building military units to defend from Montezuma's inevitable sneak attack.

Diplomacy

The key to the first half of a diplo game is to avoid negative attitute modifiers. The early positive modifiers will expire before the final vote, but negative ones last forever.

- You traded with our worst enemy!
Before trading techs, look at the international reputation of your partner. If anyone is annoyed with them, don't trade! I only had 2 trade partners for most of the game (Huayna Capac and Asoka), and they were all I needed.

- You refused to stop trading with our worst enemy!
- You stopped trading with us!

Don't sign open borders, unless you have a real strategic need to do so.

- You declared war on us!
- You declared war on our friend!

Don't declare war.

- You have fallen under the sway of a heathen religion!
Don't adopt a state religion. I spread Confucianism for border expansions, but never switched to it.

- You refused to give us help!
Give in to all demands, unless they want you to declare war or convert religion.
