Now it's official: I hate quick speed.
Nobody cares about my :gripe:ing so I spare you the details (besides I still reached the AD's before this thread existed so perhaps I can be excused for not wanting to remember my failures).
Had this been a normal speed game I might have finished this.

Now it's official: I hate quick speed.

Its quite a common feeling amongst players. :)

It is easier to get used to things taking longer to build and troops being more effective than the other way around.

I usually play quick speed just to move things along so I felt like I'd have a chance on this one though the level is higher than I am used to. I've never actually won a game on Emperor.

Having been watching some of the better players games the last few months I realized I need to stop trying to build barracks and get to cats before attacking so I built only 2 cities (first NE near the copper ~2300BC and 2nd N near the horses ~1700BC) and rushed to get to HAs. In retrospect I would have done better to go for an Axe rush but I had mentally decided HAs were the way to go before starting the game and didn't adapt when I failed to find horses before settling my first city but found them a few turns later.

I DOW on persia (no metal it seems) in 580 BC which was very early for me so skipping barracks and not worrying so much about getting TGL made a big difference. Captured 3 of persia's cities before 1AD. I didn't have a save right at 1AD but I know I had 6 cities and probably around 20 population. Guessing a bit I think I had researched Construction, Currency and Iron working but didn't have Literature, Code of Laws or MC yet.

Even though my war with Persia is going well and their defeat is on the near horizon I'm 2nd to last in the standings and have no idea if I'll have a shot at a win here. But I'm still alive so that's a plus!

I kind of like quick speed, but then I'm not a very aggressive warmonger most of the time. I had intentions of ramping up for an axe rush, but after I gave OB to Monty he started sending a ton of units to attack Persia. I probably should've piled on. Instead, I let my two neighbors fight each other while I picked off all the barb cities that popped up. I was still kind of small at 1AD, but my tech rate was pretty good. I should be on track for my earliest Lib date (which isn't saying much, I usually get it in 1200-1300 AD).

I was thinking Space from the beginning. The only question is whether I can jump to Cavalry soon enough to make a run at killing one of my neighbors.
