GOTM 121 Spoiler

...canals all the way to the starting point? I think that is what Schiaparelli saw
Yes, zoom-out does give an unusual look with the strip of irrigated plains through acres of forest. I hope if you play on to increase the score you do plenty of engineering too.

Has there been any mathematical research been published (I am pretty sure that it has been done ;)) about when is the right time to stop?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=406106&postcount=37
As Jokemaster mentioned 2% is a good rule of thumb.

Note however, that the above post, the 2% rule of thumb, the formula on CFC website, and the score_calculator on the CFC website are all for scores of GOTMs up to GOTM 89. GOTMs 90-92 have no result available and starting with GOTM 93 a new formula is being used. I will start a new thread about this.

3950 - London founded, 1SE of starting position.
3450 - size 1 settler.
3250 - Irrigation complete, begin Code of Laws.
2850 - Irrigation of second city site complete, second size 1 settler complete. York founded.
2700 - Code of Laws>Currency. York warrior.
2500 - Nottingham founded on irrigated forest.
2250 - Currency>Trade.
2050 - York settler.

Status at 2000 BC -
3 cities, 3 advances.

1950 - Hastings founded.
1900 - Canterbury founded.
1850 - Trade>Burial.
1750 - Nottingham settler.
1500 - Coventry founded. London settler.
1400 - York settler.
1350 - Burial>Monarchy. Warrior finds eastern lake.
1200 - Hastings settler.
1100 - Nottingham settler.
1000 - Warwick founded.

Status at 1000 BC -
7 cities, 4 advances.

So I have a question about scoring: According to the formula, it clearly is "More game scoring = good" and "more turns played = bad". Has there been any mathematical research been published (I am pretty sure that it has been done ;)) about when is the right time to stop? Or do I have to do it myself? I still have several cities with growing potential and have them in celebration mode, so the score is rising every turn.

I have troops in both America and Mongolia with 2 Mongol cities taken already. PortEgypt is only a few turns away. to +1000 ... A period of further expansion, wonder building, and most importantly start of conquest.
Most impressive stats, at least to me. I wasn't expecting my approach to be competitive, but I did not realise how much of a gap would open up, on all sorts of numbers, even a lesser one such as average population per city. The Pyramids and not fussing too much with precise city locations or roads, look big good choices. Maybe other things too.

One question is what the settlers (notably more than 1/city) do? Are they mainly marching east or west?

Really impressive indeed! And I am very surprised I managed to keep up with Ali in conquering until now! Not for much longer though, I haven't sent anyone towards Germany or Egypt so far. And I'm well behind in cities, population and units...

My stats till 1000 AD:
40 London sends Elephant on long march west, forgot they still have the warrior out, riots, Elvis
60 philosophy -> Mono -> Engineering, London grows, riots again, disband Warrior in the wild
Dover founded on way to Mongolia, now two Cruisaders, 1 Elli and 2 dip marching West
(Next Wows: Leo!, maybe Mike, JSB, SoL?)
London still hungry with elvis, RB Temple 76g
140 Brighton, Norwich founded
160 Leeds founded, Give techs (including Mono, maybe let them build Mike and take it then?) to America, get Banking
200 Porta America founded (the port-city to take over America), Mongols still hostile and ask for money
220 Birmingham founded
260 Porta Mongolia founded
300 Engineering -> Invention, domestic demanded gems for lousy 30g
340 Lower Gold below 50 with (i)rushbuying, talk to Mongols, give some techs, peace, maps (they left their continent)
380 Exeter founded
400 several riots, start Mike's
480 Mike's Chapel finished, New England (on American territory) founded, Mongol horse near Porta Mongolia, talk, peace, give techs
500 Invention -> University, Mongol retreats, Egypt trade for seafaring

It's a big question mark. Under Monarchy, you can have more settlers because they only eat 1 food per turn. But I've just switched to Demo in 980 AD (from Monarchy) and now they eat 2 food per turn, so now it's a mad scramble to settle/rehome (or rejoin, as a last resort) most of them and to try to prevent cities from starving and losing settlers. When still in Monarchy, I was trying to expand ASAP while building up a roadnet for future trade: I'm planning to spam caravans before starting conquest of the Americans and Mongols (mainly to fund my future army). I'm not even close to starting conquest because I concentrated in buffing up my homeland instead of sending settlers early. I'm unsure how much time it will cost me, but I'm confident I'll be able to make up for that.

Thank you
The Pyramids and not fussing too much with precise city locations or roads, look big good choices. Maybe other things too.
Pyramids definitely was a big help. My city locations were quite precise and placed to take advantage of 2+ specials. I did not bother with roads initially because I did not think they will be worth it. Now I have a road network around the tri city area (London, Nottingham, and Hastings) and developing them around the big lakes. Another factor was not switching away from Monarchy to Republic. It did hurt my science but it helped the expansion due to lack of unit cost and 1 vs 2 foods per settler.
One question is what the settlers (notably more than 1/city) do? Are they mainly marching east or west?
They are marching to a destination which is for the most part east and west. (I had never used the GOTO command so extensively before.)

Close one...

The Pyramids were crucial. Having them meant that I could churn settlers in my pheasant cities very quickly and recover almost instantly the population loss. At 1000 AD, I had 101 cities: to me, there's no doubt I'll be able to put that strong base to a good use.
Pyramids+HG=Win :)

(I had never used the GOTO command so extensively before.)

Same here. Although the current SG does use goto quite enough too.

Communism is a great choice for this game

That's what I thought too. I was deadset on Commy from day 1... but when I saw the amount of science Demo was bringing in with my silk cities, I could not resist. It's probably the fact that I've put growth and trade first before war (PortaAmerica/Mongolia are both not founded yet, but settlers are en route and are closely followed by a series of vans) that influenced my choice in the end. But I'm not going to complain about the results :)

With one domestic delivery you get two routes: one at source and one at destination unless either city already has 3 routes.
Oops, sure. Is there a quick way to check the number of trade routes instead of clicking though all cities?
I delayed exessive trade until America and Mongolia were conquered, their cities grown and the railroad network was established, allowing 1-turn-deliveries with high payouts between Mongolia and America.

Communism is a great choice for this game. I am behind in that department. I went after Sun Tzu and that tilted my tech away from democracy. Once I got Feudalism, Theology and Chivalry were too tempting and too close not to pursue. Fortunately for me, I have a whole bunch of caravans arriving in PortAmerica soon and even though most of them are no longer demanded they still get me a decent payout. I should be in Communism or Fundy by 1250.
Communism was nice, but even communist settlers are hungry, so the forest-cities couldn't support more than one settler each. When Bach was built (intentionally in Canterbury) I was switching between Fundy (war and money) and Demo (science and trade).

Is there a quick way to check the number of trade routes instead of clicking though all cities?
No there is not.
Communism was nice, but even communist settlers are hungry, so the forest-cities couldn't support more than one settler each.
Indeed. Only in despotism and Monarchy settlers eat one food per turn. Once the switch is made a lot of settlers have to be dealt with quickly. Without preparation this could lead to some losses.

I't just like almost everything else in this game: If you want to get more (trade arrows, less corruption) you have to give more (food to settlers).

I eventually finished the game after endless (rather boring) turns of maxing out the score. :crazyeye:

I probably won't be able to finish this game. I'm still in 1090 AD, conquest is not even close from starting, and I have way too much to do in the next few weeks in order to finish quickly enough. And a deadline would be useless since I have exams in June, so I guess I'll skip this one.

Anyways, here is my AD 1 to 1000 log.

I probably won't be able to finish this game. I'm still in 1090 AD, conquest is not even close from starting, and I have way too much to do in the next few weeks in order to finish quickly enough. And a deadline would be useless since I have exams in June, so I guess I'll skip this one.
There is still a week left but my guess is that you will not be the only one not being able to finish by the deadline. I just got back from out of town myself and face a very busy week. I doubt I will be able to finish in a week.

I doubt I'll be able to do a single move, with that being said.^^ Sucks, but whatever. There will always be another GOTM.
