I see in a couple of the last few turns that you made 2 discoveries per turn with science set to 50%.

If it is not too much to ask, did you have an SSC? How much science was it producing? How much terraforming did you do at the SSC site?
 
I only got two techs per turn on those two turns, since then it has been one tech per turn.

My Nottingham is my SSC. It is the first city east of London. It does not have Colossus, but it does have Hanging Gardens, Shakespeare, Copernicus, and Newton. I was not planning on having a SSC and built the science wonders fairly late. Nottingham is 4 special (2 Silk and 2 pheasant which have lately been turned into buffalo).

My original plan was to turn Nottingham and Hastings (4 special site west of London) into my main trade cities. I did spend effort building them up (both infrastructure and terrain improvements). They got the first trade routes. When I had a stockpile of food vans and nothing useful to build I decided to build Copernicus and speed science up.

In 1490 Nottingham and Hastings were both size 23. Nottingham's Pheasants have been turned into buffalo. They both have library and university. At 50% Nottingham's science output is 240, Hastings' is 84, and my entire empire is 1576.

I am in the middle of +1560. Germans were destroyed in +1545. I took out Mongols last city in +1550 since I did not need their key civ function anymore. I am filling the tech box easily with science at 10%. Egyptians last city was taken in +1560. I have troops east of Egypt but not at the shore of the east most lake yet. I also have troops west of Germany but not at the shore of west most lake yet. Romans have Gunpowder but not Conscription or Democracy. Zulu have none of those techs and are currently researching Feudalism. I am still in Democracy. I have 15 Airports mostly used for freight transport. I have 7 Alpine, 31 cavalry, 4 missiles, and 15 fighter planes. I just discovered Automobile. I am currently researching Mass Production avoiding Mobile warfare to keep SunTzu alive. I believe my cavalry and planes are more than a match for Romans and Zulu. I have not lost a single cavalry or plane yet.

With refueling needs for airplanes and other troops requiring 30 turns travel time, helicopters were the obvious choice.
Alpine are certainly not a very practical assault force. While helicopters are a fine choice, an alternative, if not better, choice is to kill the city defenders with airplanes and then take it (and hold it) with nearby alpine. Of course, paratroopers can be used for this purpose too. This of course assumes you have a city/air base within one way range of the rival city you are planning to take. If farther away, helicopters are the only choice but given that they are not very strong to begin with and weaken as they travel you need a lot of them to accomplish the task.

America was taken over in 1070, Mongolia in 1230 (except for their key-civ-pet-city). After that, I didn't sent a big army towards Egypt and Germany, just a single engineer along with some protection against barbs. The idea was to run democracy which would allow high trade pay-outs, high science, no corruption and city growth via celebration. So only one away-from-home unit could be supported with Bach-Cathedral. The Engineers founded coastal cities (Straßburg in 1600, Suez in 1620), which rushed airports to fly in troops, then transports to ship them over.

Egypt was mostly bribed with cash made from trade, Germany had to be conquered (democracy). The Egypt-job was done in 1685, Germany in 1675.

Towards Rome, I had sent parts of the America-force (which turned Cavallery along the way) with dips (turning spy). The spies could to a second step towards the forest every now and then, so Ravenna was bribed in 1615, rushing airport etc. All roman cities were bribed except for Rome, assimilation of Roman empire was completed in 1685 (same as Egypt).

Towards Zulu territory, I had sent a spy but misdirected it towards Egypt, so that campaign was stalled for a long time. Eventually the spies I sent reached their destination, all cities were subverted (had so much gold in my vault I was afraid to hit some kind of program limit) except for the capital. I had to wait a turn for that due to senate interference, but I didn't want to interrupt my power democracy. I guess that was the Power Democracy I read about about: Set rates at T0S5L5, getting two advances every turn and make so much money from trade that you don't know what to spend it on, although you rb every useful city improvement (for celebration city growth) and freights for delivery for full price from zero shields. :eek: Even undemanded hides were worth ~1500g, the highest pay-out was 6840g for demanded gems from Heidelberg -> Intombe. :crazyeye:

The final Zulu city was subverted after endless turns of trying to max out the score.

After all, it was a really interesting game that turned a little monotous in the end.

That's an incredible payout, made possible by the map being so huge. My outlying cities never got so big, and the science limit didn't get much over 2k. I did not bother trying to max score, as I was sick of the game by 1500 and just wanted it to end.

I see by comparison, I should have built about twice as many settlers and a few less vans while still in monarchy and set them to improving forest cities. Advanced governments made supporting settlers difficult, and the ones I had could spare no time for clearing forest, which kept most of my cities at size 2-3 until the end of the game. Their demanded vans still hit the trade cap, though if I'd gone for FT it would have been different.. Goto required 5 stops between America and Mongolia, not to mention 2 boat rides. Had that been a one hop trip, I believe I would have played differently toward the end.

Please feel encouraged to post detailed logs even if you're not going to win. We can all learn something from them. :)

I can't be absolutely certain about the Groundhog Day bug being real, but it's good to have some confirmation that I might not be crazy. Some of this month's turns were played much too late at night and we can't vouch for our mental state at the time.

It is not clear who this "you" is. But taking over Americans and Mongols by 1230 is very good compared to other players in this game.

That is still not too bad. By 1500 I had a foot hold in both Germany and Egypt but had not gotten involved in major warfare/buyouts yet.

Very smart. I wish I had done that. My settler got killed by barbs on its way to Germany. My PortEgypt was founded 27 turns before PortGermany. Also the big army I sent towards Egypt (later Zulu) and Germany (later Rome) is likely to be a big waste of time. Most combat is being done with air power. All I needed was one settler and one body guard for each rival. My smart move was to send a settler towards Germany and Egypt right from the start and not try to piggy back on forces sent towards America and Mongolia. My mistake was not to the same thing for Zulu and Romans. Those I tried to piggy back on German/Egyptian conquerors and that delayed my game significantly.

I think what delayed you was trying to use American conquerors for Germany and German conquerors for Rome. Similarly for Mongols/Egyptians/Zulu.

I think what delayed you was trying to use American conquerors for Germany and German conquerors for Rome. Similarly for Mongols/Egyptians/Zulu.

I think it would have been enough to send just dips, a settler and some guards towards Rome, Germany, Egypt and Zulu. Big armies marching through the woods would be inefficient because of unhappiness in democracy. The cavaleries I had sent towards Rome fell behind the dips after they turned to spies, so when they finally reached their destination the Roman empire was already conquered.

My mistake was to send the Zulu-troops way too late, considering I managed to conquer Rome, Germany and egypt almost silmutaneousely.

I mostly agree. In retrospect the quickest way to win would have been to send 4 settlers one for each island nation (this I did in -625), 2 diplomats one for Zulu and one for Romans (this I did not do), and body guards for all 6 (I only did this for some of them and not always in synch which resulted in one of the 4 settlers falling victim to a barbarian).
Not only armies would be inefficient for the reason you mentioned they were totally useless and just wasted time (both game time and real time). Neither my Roman nor my Zulu invasion force of cavalry made it in time. I should have learned from GOTM 108 where the map was somewhat similar and just like this game it was the air force and spies that finished the job. Actually I did learn a partial lesson and I did not make a huge army (my total invasion force of cavalry+artillery never reached 30).

I just finished and submitted. Fun game but took way too much real time. I am looking forward to shorter game and doing some OCCs soon.
