GOTM 30 Pre-Game Discussion (Game announcement page is up)

Would it be too much of a risk to move the worker over to the game/forest tile? He'd get a peek at the tile north of the game, and I suspect I'll want a road there...that would be a decent move if the settler moves East, but not a strong move if you want to move him south...

I agree with TechStep and claim it to be wheat. I imposed a picture of wheat next to the enhanced blowup.

I am a newbie to GOTM, so please don't get mad at me for asking this, but is it normal procedure to blow up the sneak-peaks like this? Somehow, image enhancement doesn't seem like ancient-age technlogy! :)

I don't mean to harrass anybody for having done this. I'm just wondering if it's something one needs to do to be competitive in the GOTM.

Krisk,

Welcome to the GOTM! :D If you have any set-up proglems etc, please contact one of the staff via PM or e-mail to gotm@civfanatics.net.

In response to your question. We don't 'encourage' this kind of image enhancement, but we don't actively discourage it either. In my view, the real benefit in having these pre-game discussion threads is that it facilitates information sharing. If everyone has the same pre-info, then all the better.

As for this particular mystery wheat? I can't remember myself whether there's one there, so I might go and check.

I might go and check, and I might go and edit... :mischief:

You are pure evil, ainwood! Even if there is nothing there! Pure evil I say, EVIL!

Oh, but then again... that's probably why we keep coming back for more. :whipped:

BarbSlinger.

I concurr.

@krisk

The image enhancment is fun, It will always be a gamble but If barbslinger and I are right then our gamble will have paid off.

Hmm... if indeed the coast to the south is freshwater, and if the mystery tile is indeed wheat, then you can have a 4-turn settler factory at a capital located SE of the settler's current location.

SE is a forrest--is that what you meant?

I believe it's just more forest.......and not wheat.
I think I'll move the worker to the deer and depending on what can be seen, I'll move the settler east or southeast.

Hmm, its not forest thats for sure, but something tells me there is something under the half covered tile. Why else would the hills be visible and a grass tile only partly?

I'm actualy hoping it to be a incense bonus tile or so. If our coastal borders aren't fresh water tiles, that will be a big problem. A bonus wheat tile will then be less usefull.

Has anyone noticed the position on the minimap? We are either on the top of an island or penninsula. Beiing this close to the edges of the minimap the best lands may be to the south (I expect to find tundra up north) so fast expansion may be needed to be sure we have enough workable tiles.

A race to mapmaking may be in order here for a fast foothold on other continents. How knows.

Ok, we are playing monarch level and environment is warm.

Hmm, that means water wont be in great supply and probaly a lot of dessert tiles. Being up north on the minimap might not be as bad as I thought.

Would have preferred a wet scenario, gives lassie a chance to run through those pesky jungles ;)

I just read the announcement, looks good!
I noticed one thing though;
In this month's game, you must try to build the Spanish Empire to resemble the mighty empire to which it aspired. It goes without saying that trade is all important. Can you prevent the money from drying up?

I guess this means that we'll have very few (if any) strategic/luxury resources available, which IMO will be both very hard and interesting.
If this is the case, Trade Embargoes can be extremely troublesome, so keeping the world happy and staying in peace with everyone will be very important.

1 more day to go - I can't wait :D

That blow-out is really more than I want to know.

I believe I have to use the worker as a scout the first turn (which I hate) and if/then settle either N or W.

A dry start on a possible island makes it very difficult, I would say max to Writing and MapMaking

The clouded difficuly level, doesn't help.

We won't get Deity again.

I'm fairly stumped, by guessing, but I give you one hint, I think this is archi or continents. 1 to 0.93 is a supposed safe bet :)

That was a joke!

First movement will be crucial!

Without starting worker and not on the river can be very tough! Will play open instead of predator probably. First time from GOTM23 thinking it seriously. However Monarch it can be ...

But this is of course no position where our city should produce settlers.

Hmmm, if our gotm intelligence agency (barbslinger, TechStep ;) ) is right, I have to correct me.

If theres really wheat and fresh water nearby it seems that would be a too easy starting position for a monarch game. On the other hand i expect after reading the game announcement almost no recources or luxurys on our island and the predator class has the 0 worker penalty which means a big diffence to the open class.

Seems to me that we start on a relatively small island with not too many other civs on ( as in the India game?) and it could be important that we early build a second core on another island (west). Then the Great Lighthouse is a must.

I also think that we can only build very incomplete city rings around our capital ( I dont like the starting position to be coast). Perhaps this leads to an early Forbidden Palace (or Palace rebuild) on our home island at a more central position.

Hope for an early GL to rush Palace or FP on another island.

I expect to meet the Aztecs, the Americans, the Portugese and the

( also Zulu, Rome, Iroquise?)

You mean like the word link spelled wrong on the first post of this thread :D

As for the level, based on the Predator mod

AI Free unit support: increased to Emperor Level

I would guess Monarch (15% chance of regent)
