GOTM 30 Pre-Game Discussion (Game announcement page is up)

I was soooo close to making it Deity....

Okay, I'm not a deity player. My only success at deity was in a deity SG w/ some veteran players. But, I am surprised to see the GOTM back to monarch again. I was completely expecting emperor or demi-god on this one.

Is there a set approach or decided by committee based on what kind of map is created, etc?

I think I may be more woriied about that. I'm really hoping for wheat to get the 4-turn factory so I can sic a coastal city on the collussus for the front end of a GA launch. I don't want to wait until astronomy. I'm thinking Bachs for the back end.

Am I really intrigued by this part of the discription:

In this month's game, you must try to build the Spanish Empire to resemble the mighty empire to which it aspired. It goes without saying that trade is all important. Can you prevent the money from drying up?

This makes me think that rivers will be non-existant on our starting continent, maybe a short one. And with Monarch being the skill and considering our grassland start, perhaps we don't get any fresh water at all.

But then again, i'm sure I'm still looking too much into it. :crazyeye: I'll have to wait til after work tonight to find out for certain.

One last question about the "fresh water situation" in this game. I know that any tile adjacent to a river gives you a commerce bonus. Does this also apply to a lake?

Here one could click on the tile south to the settler to know whether its coast or lake in SSE then.

Folks, we've been had! This ain't gonna be no monarch level game! [use best Southern accent]

This here is what'cha call an 'April Fools' joke! :cringe:

We're lookin' at some sick level, demi-god or deity.

Something to think about..... ;)

...either that or the hardest Monarch game ever created!

Personally, I think it might be kind of cool if there were no good settler factory sites. I missed a few games last fall, but it seems every game I've played has had a factory site somewhere near the start. Might shake things up a bit! ;)

dojo, I think you are right! Look for lots of Easter eggs too. Easter is on April 11th.

Now that you mention it, I did notice that there was no speculation thread this month. Makes one think that Ainwood may be having too much fun! When we download, we may find Zulus at Sid?

The storyline also makes me wonder--to me, it suhhests that we will not have trouble with money and trade at the beginning, but we will be challenged as the game goes on.

Since Diamonds (and other Gems) are Forever, this suggests to me that there's a strong and nasty country on the other side of the worls, that we will see later (maybe I'm being too literal and too imaginative at once).

re: GOTM levels--seems to me that the lower the level, the scarser the resources.

Hoping I can juggle helping my wife clean the house for Passover (all bread and a whole lot more must go!) with starting the game tonight...

First move I think is the worker N - all this talk of the mystery wheat has me determined to check it out. Plus there doesn't seem a lot to see to the S in one move.

Alternatively - move the settler N and mine the Bonus Grassland. Hmm... this loses a turn but gives a slightly better shield rate.

Yep. I'll stick with the first option and play it safe - if there's no wheat, then move the settler to the SE looks best. There's 3 mystery flat tiles within the city radius, any of which could have a bonus food.

First research - I think I'll go Polytheism, as it is likely that there is at least 1 commercial rival nearby (Rome or England) who will go for Writing. Just as likely that there is a religious civ local, of course, but for some reason I get better trades when I go Polytheism. Don't ask me why.

I wonder if ainwood has turned the map through 90 degrees? I mean, to the west is a Med like small sea, and the real ocean is South or even East? Oh well, soon find out.

Warm climate. Jungles. Without Industrious workers. Oh well, can't have everything...

Have we forgotten the Ring City strategy?

P.S. This will be my first GOTM since the greeks, and my first post here or in Apolyton since forever! If you remember me, I'm back into civ now.

Seriously, though, why not move onto the grassland to the east?

I guess I'm unconventional, but the ring strategy works real well in tight land situations and will help you out immensely in the early game :)

Turn 1: Worker mine and road the BG, settler goes East
Turn 2: Build city
Later on, you know what to do if you know how to do the ring strategy :)

That's my plan, either that or sell out and go north :(

ainwood, it might be worth re-stickying (<- warning, made up word :crazyeye: ) that thread, or maybe adding it to the list of banned exploits on the gotm.civfanatics.net site.

I hope this isn't the wrong place to ask for this kind of help. Please accept my apologies if I posted incorrectly. First time GOTM player here, attempting to play this with the PTW exe I have...

I downloaded and installed the "full install" modpacks/add-ons from GOTM 21-25. Start PTW exe, no problems. When I try to load the game, I get

LOAD ERROR
ERROR READING FILE
Missing entry in "text\pidiaIcons.txt": animname_prto_pictish_warrior
the game will now exit

I went to my \CivIII directory, and there are 18 files named pediaicons.txt

If someone could give me some help, e-mail or PM, I'd really appreciate it.

@Scoutsout: I don't recall the exact instructions, but I believe that you didn't go back far enough with loading the mods. I think that htey started ~GOTM16. Read the instructions again, and make sure that you went back far enough. If you then go to the posting site for the earliest one, you should find a whole discussion on Picts and Giant Squid, etc.

Good luck!
