GOTM 30 Pre-Game Discussion (Game announcement page is up)

i get the same error, incidentally, although also game pack 25 wouldn't install for me at all.

@stagger Lee: I saw your other thread. I think that there are problems when trying to play the GOTM via the Conquests version of play the world. You can try to play it using normal Civ3 (download the Civ3 packs), or wait for us to try and sort out the issue. :)

Wow, I didn't know about that bug, but now that I think about it, I've been unintentionally benefitting from it in several games that I can remember....

Without giving away too much, ainwood, can you see how many players of this GoTM could unintentionally use this exploit to some fashion?

I think the geography of the start location almost lends itself to the rank exploit. What degree of appearance constitutes an offensive use of this exploit?

Think about the geography, ainwood, I'm guaranteeing you that many players of this GoTM will unintentionally benefit from this exploit for at least some time during the game.

Perhaps certain types of maps should be banned from use, if this exploit is not allowed.

Have a look at the discussion thread about this rule. There are clear examples of the kind of play that would or would not constitute material breach. As with several GOTM rules it's more about sticking with the spirit than trying to nail down the precise limits of the letter of the law.

@Dianthus: Good points. We are trying to limit the number of sticky posts by popular demand, but I've added RCP and Rank Corruption Exploit as green and red entries in the rules, with a link to the discussion thread.

@ WarriorPoet: All map types should be OK. This exploit only really occurs when the palace is built as far as possible from other cities, without any other (player) cities close to it. You can avoid the exploit simply by ensuring that you jump your palace somewhere that has a few cities under your control.

I'm playing my 2nd ever GOTM. Spain was not part of civ III (and I skipped PTW) what is Spain's UU and traits? My civpedia text is blank on Spain.

i am new also, but played a few last gotms for myself ( submitted the Indian game and played the Equiptian with reloading several times to learn a bit and also Korea), Spain is religious and commercial. Hope to win with a high score this time (but several people will do better although i have done fine until the industrial age).

But the gotms are the most fun games i ever played:-)
So thx to ainwood and cracker.

i think i'm a bit late, but still - here are my pregame ideas:

this is the first game i thought about going predator for a second ... but i rather have a few more successful gotms before moving up. and besides, i didn't want to loose my initial worker!
i will enforce exploring the starting land mass to get an idea of how the world might look. i expect a rather small land area. in any case, we will have some "interesting" neighbors to trade with and to conquer. with alphabet, i tend to try the writing - literature gamble.
the "mystery wheat" is likely to be forest. this is my result of setting up the visible tiles of the starting location in the editor. sorry guys, who already wasted a worker turn, but you were probably wrong.

we'll see .... i'm going to load gotm30 in a few minutes :)

I can't wait to start talking about the middle ages...

Is it a 'spoiler' if one posts compliments on the neat-o units that are unique to GOTM? (First time GOTM player here...enjoying the scenery...)

I'm a newbie here and anxious to get going on GOTM 30 for my first GOTM. But after a pretty reasonable search of the civfanatics site I can't seem to figure out what I need to download in addition to the .sav file to get going. Is there some sore of comprehensive mod that gets me what I need? I looked at some of the old GOTMs and they had links for downloads for required graphics but no joy for GOTM 30.

Any help or a shove in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

Greetings fellow newbie! Since I just did this last week, I'll be glad to tell you what did (and didn't) work for me.

First, if you're thinking of playing PTW off of a Conquests disk, don't, unless you like crashes. Only play the PTW version of the GOTM if you have a PTW disk. Apparently there's some sort of issue there... If you have a conquests disk you'll need to play with the Civilization3.exe (which is Civ1.29f).

You want to download the "full install" add-on packs for GOTM 21-25 for the software you're going to use. (Civ1.29f or PTW). Install them in game order (GOTM 21, then 22, etc.) to the x:\Program Files\Infogrames\CivilizationIII directory, where x: is the drive...(probably c).

I don't think any of this stuff is set up to work with Conquests... which is probably a Good Thing, since the gameplay and tech tree are more than a bit different in C3C...

Welcome to the club, Ranger Steve. :wavey:

You should read the instructions on the main page for the game. They give you a trail of breadcrumbs to follow, and you'll find you need to install the full setup for gotm 21 (if you're on a PC) and then the add-ons for some games later than that up to gotm 25. I *think* you can leave out gotm 22 and 23, because I looked at the 24 installer and it said you only need 21 as a pre-requisite. If so then it's not too bad - full 21 + add-on 24 + add-on 25. You also need a small pediaIcons.txt file that was distributed with the 28 and 29 start files.

You should really read the instructions and follow the trail, as it will fill you in on the changes included in these mods. But if you are looking for a fast track I put together two posts full of links in the GOTM Reference thread, These connect you directly to the files and threads associated with each game.

@scoutsout

I play the GOTM off the Conquests disk and have no problems. In fact, PTW no longer works with its own disk. It insists on having the Conquests disk in the drive. Confusingly, it puts up the C3C splash screen.

Well, I kept getting errors for some reason, and could not get the game to load without crashing. Multiple messages back and forth with Ainwood, to no avail. So I'm simply playing the thing with the 1.29f executable.

But I wouldn't mind knowing how you set yours up, for future reference. (It's a little late for me now in this game!)

If you conduct a fresh install of Civ3, then Conquests, it will install PTW but it will be 'derived' from the Conquests CD, and will only run if the Conquests CD is in the drive. You will get the Conquests splash screen, but no movie (neither the PTW movie or the Conquests one).

If you want to keep PTW checking for the PTW CD, you would need to do a fresh install of Civ3, then an install of PTW from the PTW CD, THEN install Conquests. If it sees PTW already installed, it won't change anything with the PTW install. I have 2 computers, one set up with PTW then Conquests, one with a straight Civ3 -> Conquests install and it works either way.

There are two different scenarios here: Playing with the PTW that ships with the conquest disk, and playing with PTW once you have installed conquests.

@scoutsout: Space & Zagnut did some testing and managed to get the game running under PTW that shipped with conquests (ie - what you were trying to do). The key point is to make sure the installers are set to install to the directory with your Civ3 installation, NOT your PTW install. But at least you got yours working under vanilla civ. :)

:hmm: I think this thread needs a slice & dice edit to remove all the tech support stuff.
