GOTM 30 Pre-Game Discussion (Game announcement page is up)

I'm at work atm, and am curious as to which techs a Commercial and Religious civilization starts with?

That would be alphabet and ceremonial burial

Thanks a thousand :)

Guess I'll start researching Pottery on 100% then, to get the Granary as soon as possible.

Well, I'll probably start by checking if we are sitting on a BG. If yes, then since the settlers going to move anyway he'll start by going SE to the woods and if nothing exciting is spotted, the worker will start roading/mining the BG. On turn two the settler will create a city and make sure to work the deer. Research at max for pottery (unless there is a lot of expanionist AI) and building a warrior for scouting.

I'm not really a big fan of Spain, though I did win my first diety game (diety light) with them. The UU is quite underpowered for the era. I'm not much of a pillager, which is what that unit does best. The rules mods changing map trading, might make it more valuable when a new continent (world) is discovered.

Religious is one of my favorite traits and I plan on temples in every city. Commercial though weaker in the early game, is a strong late game trait. I'm thinking of a Bach/Smith combo for the GA. Until a little more of the map becomes unvieled, a victory condition for Spain is rather hazy, it's been a while since I've built a space ship, but I've never won a 100K game either, so both have potential. Of course there's alway the warmonger options and they both are quicker than the peaceful methods. If this is a diety game, then any victory condition is acceptable.

Our placement on the mini-map might mean a smallish continent (or even an island based) game. Map Making will be an early target unless the island ends up being larger that it appears as of now.

As for barbarians, I agree with King of America, that the barbs will be running amok.

Only 61.75 hours to go until we find out.

You know, the settler could be sitting on a warm Alaska, with the meridian just to the W of Vancouver, and a big ole continent on the other side of the map divide...

I may try to submit another QSC, although it's basically become pointless.

@Ainwood: Please address QSC. Is it alive, or only old
Memorex...

@RowandLive,

Ainwood said in this post that the QSC is next on the "to do" list, so it sounds positive. I am a big fan of that as well, and have been submitting them each month, I hope they can get it up and running again. If the recent results are an indication, it looks like they are on track! :goodjob:

Does anyone know what level this is on? If it is deity, with a dry start, this could potentially be very difficult. Unless it a 'pelago map, which would make it very interesting :D

Actually, Demi-God would be the next level, if we were running up the levels. Playing Spain as Deity in Gotm20, and then as Deity (or even Demi-God) in Gotm30 would, as Mad-Bax said, be too much of a good thing. Also, we played Deity in Gotm26, which was fairly recent.

Last Regent game was Carthage, Gotm17. I'd speculate Regent, with no fresh water nearby (but it is just speculation.) How about a fairly isolated low commerce starting spot! Unless I see some miraculously great food resource nearby, I'm staying within 2 spaces of the Game and sharpening my axes!

I haven't played since GOTM 23. Do I have to install the set up files for each game since then or is there one file which covers them all?

You need through GOTM 25, IIRC.

Well I have 1 day left to submit my GOTM29 -> Just have to get rid of the Germans. Should be able to knock it off in an hour or so.

Anyways, back to this thread.

The first thing that I would like to say is that Ainwood uses too high a compression on his Jpeg's, makes it difficult to "see under the fog" ;)

I reckon the following.

1: The settler IS standing on a bonus grass
2: To the East beyond the hills lies forrest and/or hills as well
3: It looks like there is something under the fog E/NE

I think Han was a game where I moved 3 spots to settle. I'm considering climbing one of the mountains and find out what's out there. What should I discover there to make this viable from a growth perspective?? The game forest doesn't make it easy... Should I settle on the visible hill?
Still I guess moving west with my worker makes sense.

Maybe ainwood is planning to upgrade the UU or introduce it earlier on the tech tree ... :where is the I wish Smilie ?:

On a PC I believe you need to install the full 21 setup pack then the 24 and 25 add-ons.

On a Mac (Jaguar or Panther) you use the Mac installers and start with the full 23 pack then use the 24 and 25 add-ons. PM me for help with other OS versions.\

If you already have a working 23 installation just add the 24 and 25 add-ons.

Low food, high production starting position.
Im not so familar with the snoopy graphics, but is it possible, that in SSE is not a coast but a lake? Then we would at lest have access to fresh water. But this is of course no position where our city should produce settlers.

Perhaps i will move the worker south to see whats out there and then build a road there first which the first scouting warrior can be use to explore. Then we also have enough time to mine the bonus grassland which will be worked after the first growing (if i settle on the spot, depends if it is BG where the settler stands).

Probably i build two warrios first (3 or four if we have raging barbs), then a quick cheap temple. Then its the time for the first settler, i hope the warriors have explored a place with more food and a few shields where one can establish a settler factory.

Since the first granary probably is builded by the second city i will try to research writing on 40 turns. After that we can research Map making or Literature at 40 turns dependent on the land mass.

If it turns out to bee a seafaring game i will start a prebuild for the Great Lighthouse in the capitol or third city so that the wonder is finished when map making is available.

Rethinkng this, I may send my worker north to see how much land area is available. Also, its possible that the coastal tile to the south is the banks of a freshwater lake.

edit: I just read Leibniz comment about the lake idea. I made a quick reply from the first page while looking at the image.

This will be very interesting. I know I want to move the settler off the BG, so what are my best options? I figure S or E. I don't want to settle on the forest because I'll lose the forest chop. I don't want to settle SW, because I'll lose too many shield producing tiles. Since the tile south appears to have a beach, I'm going to take the chance that it is fresh water and move south. That would grab two BGs, three forests, the game, a mountain, and a hill on expansion, plus TechStep's mysterious tile north of the mountain. I'll start mining the BG the worker stands on.
