GOTM 38 Spoiler

Oh damn, then I'm ruined :D.. At some point I really didn't care about treaties anymore and just attacked even from peace, so my Rep was attrocious... Ouch

Finally finished - I neglected to make an Embassy with the Spanish before wiping out their visible cities - it took 12 turns to find the other two and bribe them (sorry, LaFayette, I coudn't resist)

I used the Smash-style Knight invasion strategy and it would have worked even better if I had used my diplomats intelligently. As it was, I finished well before 1000AD. Never got out of Monarchy. While searching for the pesky Spanish, I built Mike's to jack up the score.

It was a nice experience to finish before the 7th of the month!

Part Two

2000 - Antioch Settler
1950 - Map Making -> Currency
- - - Susa Settler
1800 - Tarsus Settlers
- - - Pop > 200k
- - - Tyre founded
1700 - Pasargadae, Persepolis Settlers
- - - Mine completed in Tyre city square
1650 - Currency -> Trade
1550 - Arbela Settlers
- - - Susa Settler
1500 - Bactra settlers
- - - Sardis founded
1450 - Gordium Settler
1400 - Sidon Settlers
- - - Antioch Settler
1350 - Trade -> Literacy
1300 - First Trireme sets sail
1250 - Samaria founded
1150 - Greek trireme dies attacking our trireme (vet)
- - - Tarsus Hides van
- - - Hamadan founded on new island
1050 - Greek Horse approaches exploring unit, demands HBR (?) no. War. None-horsemen killed :(
- - - Literacy -> Mysticism
- - - Susa, pasargadae, persepolis - hides vans

- - - 1000 years later, and only 4 new cities! What's wrong??? Well quite a bit of forest planting was done because more shields = more settlers (and caravans), roads were built connecting cities and heading out to the frontier, plus the city of Tyre was built on a mined hill. At one point we had 10 settlers running around. Even now, 8 settlers are currently active and, have no fear, they will eventually become cities. In addition, we have ventured off our rock to settle on a new continent where we made first foreign contact with the less-than-welcoming Greeks. Time to get some elephants into the field!

- - - Hmm...I wonder what I'm going to do with all those caravans built in the last two turns?

You've got the general idea, but i already had Polytheism at this point. :nya:

I missed that. PT before Maps? Get off the island first, find some neighbors and milk them - then kill them...
I wasn't sure what Duke had given out, so I wanted to be ready when I got out there (or if they came calling early). Plus, I can never seem to get much tribute - probably too few military units or something - so I just skipped the "milk them" step. :D

Getting weeds has nothing to do with difficulty level, it has to do only with the Barbarian setting. When the Raging Hordes level is selected, there are never weeds. With Restless Tribes there is a percentage. On lower settings there is a greater percentage. This is actually in the manual, which seems to be correct in this instance.

Aha! I admit I was very puzzled about the "weeds" comment. I vaguely recall reading in the manual (long ago) that it was possible for a hut to be "empty," but I had never seen it before. Grigor's comment explains why: I always play with Raging Hordes (or worse).

I have seen early ATs in my own games. In D+ games, they can appear before the founding of your first city, just as Tim experienced. Hypothesis: ATs (prior to your first city) are suppressed at deity but not at other levels?

Tribute only works when you have greater military force (just number of units, not quality) on their "continent". Not sure about whether one or more cities is necessary; I kind of remember that being a question in a previous GOTM. No, I was referring to "milking" their techs and maps...

My tech path was messed up by huts, AI trades, and stupidly not noticing the SCENARIO mode at the beginning:

(freebies: Bro&Cer)
4000BC-2000BC:
Alp/(hut-Hor)/Wri/CoL/Mon/Map/Cur/
at which point I realized it was direct techs...

2000BC-1000BC:
/Tra/(exch-Pot)/Lit/Mys/

1000BC-1AD:
/(hut-Mas)/Phi->PT/(exch-War)/MT/Feu/Chi/(capt-Iro)/(exch-Mat)/

AD1-AD550:
/(capt-Whe)/Rep/Sea/The/Cst/Ast/Nav/Med/Eng/(exch-Uni)/Phy/ThG/San/Inv...

shortly after that, it didn't matter anymore...

I had not played conquest in over a year, so I had forgotten the AI tricks when under attack. Every civ but the Japs founded at least one city after my attacks on their home island began. The Greeks founded three, all off of their main island. The advantage of bribing is that you don't raze the city, so that pumps your score.

I used the Smash-style Knight invasion strategy and it would have worked even better if I had used my diplomats intelligently. As it was, I finished well before 1000AD. Never got out of Monarchy. While searching for the pesky Spanish, I built Mike's to jack up the score.

I liked Knights over Crusaders due to the extra defensive points. You don't have to bring along slow-moving Archers or Legions to hold things or stack with wounded attackers. I've seen players blitz with Crusaders; I'm just a little conservative. I realized later that Elephants would have sufficed to get started with, and I could have started a LOT earlier - I shifted from "development" to "offensive" around 500BC. After wrapping up the Mongols I did an 8 turn stint in Republic to pump up my cities, then shifted back to Monarchy to take out the Celts. I had HG, Mikes, JSB and Oracle (only 1 Temple, though...) to help with unhappiness. My Rep did suffer due to my impatience with the Japs refusal to be goaded into war, and the pesky missing Spanish city...

Sounds like DoM is not going to get many AD1000 saves...

I did Knights in a conquest GOTM about a year ago. They're definitely nice, and you can get there early without going up the whole "Theism" branch. But I like the Vet crusaders because they just don't lose when they attack. They also keep a lot of hit points when they do win so they can usually attack again the next turn if the AI wants to keep fighting.

Rather than play for defense, I tried to attack from the sea whenever possible, bringing more units than the size of the city so I could at least Raze it - eliminating the possiblity of a counterattack from the city. And if atttacking by land, I either spread out attackers so I couldn't lose very many at once before the kill, or I would position a sacrificial unit closer to absorb any attack from the city, then attack with the second wave.

"Attacking" with Dips is also very effective, and then you don't have to bring the Def=2 units with you, the AI builds them for you! ;)

Hehehe reputation torphy....the one game I don't worry about it!!:P Every other game I make a point to never touch my pristine reputation, but this game since it was so horrid anyway I just broke everything whenever I felt like it, even when it wasn't even necessary (I made a treaty for 50 gold and attacked the same turn once). Oh well:). I completed well before 1000Ad (thats alot of turns in prince), but I am milking this game for all its worth pointwise. Its such a pain to build up a huge hyper-expanded empire, though, I think next month will definitely be an occ game for me.

That's what I was up to when Spain offered me 150g for a cease fire. I figured not only is it easy money, but it makes the cities cheaper to bribe, so I took it, then immediately broke the cease fire to kill the unit that brought it to me. :mischief:

"confession is good for the soul..."

I did a lot of bribing, as I was looking for a max score as well as a fast conquest. Still got a lot to relearn on that.

Good game, "DooM"!
