Let's give the poor bugger a break. I'm sure there's not a huge profit being made out of this site.

Hey, it might happen in the future that I simply don't have the time and that you'll have to wait a week or two, maybe even three. I mean, I am doing a very tough study and it's all voluntary work, which I will only do in my spare time. Ofcourse, should this happen, than I'll announce it earlier.

However, I just mailed the GOTM V results to Thunderfall.

Congratulations Smash! A worthy opponent indeed and a worthy finish! It is amazing how close the top 3 (even 5) finished in the GOTM score formula, given the ending times were quite different!

It is apparent that you found the "sweet spot" of balancing a mongo population (like mine was) vs. a fast finish (like Shadowdale's fine effort). All that OCC experience must help?!

Wow, so many did so well, compared to what I saw in GOTM 4. Everything was a lot closer, and it really looks like there are going to be about 10 people with a decent shot at the top spots, so your days of running wild are over, Shadowdale
wink.gif
.

It would be cool to figure some way to adjust an OCC score if someone wanted to play the game in that style. Smash did a great job in GOTM 4 playing OCC, but got hammered in the score department.

Matrix, you did a great job with GOTM formula IMHO, and it seems to work well in practice, too.

Well, actually it is still unfair (by about 5%) to everyone who does not launch a SS before 1850, but we've cussed and discussed that in another thread
wink.gif
.

BTW, that's due to the inaccurate computation of the actual ending turn (e.g., my "true" landing turn was 272, not 267, which would have lowered my score; similar story for Smash, who probably also actually landed 5 turns later; but it does not hurt our scores, only those of most everyone else
frown.gif
).

hehe... As for the Global Ranking, if we could only drag Matrix (kicking and screaming) into the world of modern post-event statistical analysis and ranking procedures to compute realistic GRs...

Hey, thanks for all your work on the GOTM, Matrix and Thunderfall.

BC BASHING? OK, I'm impressed with the ability of so many to smite their enemies so early. To adapt a phrase from Winston Churchill, "Never before, in the field of Civ II combat, have so many conquered so many, so early, in so many games!"

Maybe I'm going to have to rethink what must obviously be a pacifist philosophy by comparison to some, like Shadowdale (conquest in 620 AD!!) and Inquisitor (1070 AD!) and the phenomenal Cactus Pete (80 AD... my eyes must be blurring!!). If I only had starts that good! Maybe I should have you guys play my early years, and I'll take over when some heads are bashed. GOTM score = 452, LOL!

LOL, hope you experts and BC warmongering can help us non-violent types out!

Hey Edge, what happened in 2003 AD? Did the AI really get you? You seemed so close to 2020!

Well,I don't think I'll be playing that way again anytime soon.I had the ai down to 1 city by 150bc and it was quite boring filling up the map.I delayed launching my max ship to inhabit the poles and other such wayward spots. In between it was rushing this and rushing that, settlers, engineers, caravans blah blah blah.
Very tedious and way too much like work.

Then again, there is that GR thing....

Holy handgrenades, how did you cream the AI so quickly? Were you using a profound ICS strategy? I could not even explore, much less conquer all, by that point. Were you just making military units (vet horsemen?) by the dozens? How did you get enough force overseas so early? Maybe I just don't respect the lowly trireme enough.

BTW Smash,

I know all games develop differently, but I did notice your PowerGraph in GOTM 6 (see other thread) was quite superior to mine, in terms of killing the enemy and also in terms of our Indian civs. I'm guessing I need to embrace the ICS strategy with more vigor? And maybe I develop the land too much and/or too early also. Maybe those "perfecting" settlers need to go out and just make new cities to get going with a larger city base, but smaller city populations.

Oh gosh no..I despise ICS...although it can be effective.I build as the terrain dictates. Some areas will ICS-ish while others will be spaced out bypassing mountains, deserts etc.You almost will never find one of my cities without at least 1 special.I explore aggressively and build cities before roads.I don't usually start roading until I can spare 2 settlers to do the job quicker.

If I'm going for conquest I start right away.My first and often only wonder will be Sun Tzu's.Knights, pikes and then crusaders is usually enough. The best way to keep the ai from getting Gunpowder is not too discover it..so science goes to zero once the needed miliatry tech is discovered.

Congratulations, Smash. I can't restrain myself. . . Smashing Game!

If you had gone ahead and conquered in 150BC, you certainly could have razzed me. I have never been able to take over the world before 1AD in any of my games, not just GOTM.

On the other hand, I think shadowdale was just toying with us, and he will probably make us all regret that you razzed him.

I think you are right
wink.gif

He didn't play his "normal" game and still scored quite well.I think he is just crazy enough to do a 10,000+ game in a GotM.
