GOTM 73 Spoiler

GOTM 73: Japanese, King, 75 x 120, 7 civs, Raging Hordes. 520 Turn Game. Starting tech BW, WC, IW. Hut; Forest and Whale visible -- possible to build settler w/o losing citizen.

Opening thoughts: Pop hut as 1st move. Set tax 60% to RB Settler before city grows. Raging hordes suggests PHX to defend each city, a little closer placement and some horses for chasing down leaders. King level is like a free Temple -- a direct run to Republic can be tried but none of the starting techs support that. City blessed with many shield grass, can evolve to SSC, Wonderville, or even settler factory.

Day 1: Sunday Feb 18, 2007

4000 HUT--> ALPH. Would greatly prefer a horse. Now we're behind.
Tax set to 60 %
3950 Kyoto Founded. Citizen works Whale, Prod=Settlers. Research = CB
3600 Worker moved from whale to forest.
3400 RB Settler; worker to Whale, tax to 40 %.
3350 Settler produced, Warriors Next.
3300 Kyoto size 2
3250 1st warriors produced. Prod = Settlers
3100 Osaka founded. A slip of the mouse cost 2 turns
3050 CB-->CoL
3000 HUT--> 50g. Used to IRB Kyoto Settlers. They will build a few roads enroute new site.
2600 RB Phx in Kyoto. Warriors are off exploring.
2550 Phx defending Kyoto, settlers next. Edo founded on river.
2500 CoL-->MON
2350 HUT--> 1 Barb Horse
2250 PRB Phx for Edo.
2200 HUT-->50g. RB Edo's Phx and Osaka's Settlers.
2050 MON-->Writing. REVOLUTION.
1950 HUT-->1 barb horse.
1850 Monarchy formed. Obviously messed up the Oedo year for the switch. Not happy with this opening, too many mistakes. Kyoto Phx sent to defend settlers from barb horse. Kagoshima founded.
1800 HUT-->WRI. That's what we were working on. Select Lit, aiming for Phil.
1700 IRB settlers in Osaka. Kyoto begins wonder pre-build.
1450 HUT-->Horseman, assigned None
1350 LIT--> MYST. City of Nara founded
1300 Nagoya founded. Horse spots a road -- we're not alone after all!
1250 Horse finds French city of Rhiems. We decline peace and they ignore our feeble threat for tribute.
1200 French warriors kill our horse. Well, we know where they are now.
950 French chariot kills our exploring Warriors. What a game:( Izumo founded.
925 Nagasaki founded.
825 IRB Diplomat in Nagasaki.
750 WHEW. French nearly raze Nagasaki. We defeat one horse and bribe another, then kill their warrior. PHIL-->freebee MAS-->CURR. Kyoto Wonder Prod changed to Great Wall. City of Shimonoseki.
700 Decline Cease-Fire with French. War continues. 2 Phx in Nagasaki now.
525 CURR-->TRADE
500 IRB Legion in Nagasaki. French are pesky today!
475 Our Legion loses vs. French Phalanx.
450 French warriors kill our wounded phalanx.
375 French trireme unloads chariot at Nagasaki. Not enough gold for bribe.
350 Our phalanx holds out. City would have vanished if we lost.
325 We refuse French Cease-fire request. War continues.
300 TRA-->MAPS. All Settler production changed to Caravans.
250 Barracks in Nagasaki. Legion Next.
175 Two French Catapults approach, can't be bribed. RB Great Wall in Kyoto. IRB Legion in Nagasaki.
150 Legion takes out catapults. We're looking good now with Gr Wall and Vet Legion.
100 French city of Marseilles discovered. Purple trireme spotted. 4th caravan arrives Kyoto for Marco Polo.
50 We use Marco to get all available techs and maps. No Chinese map as they don't have map tech. Celts have the best homeland, English the worst. We don't bother with the French as we want them by force. Cities:
Celts 8, French 4, Spanish 4, Chinese 5, English 4, Mongols 5, Japanese 14.

+ 10 Quit for awhile. 14 cities in Monarchy, Taxes 4.6.0 17-1, 12 turns. 18 Techs. Empire connected by roads. Two Wonders; caravans in Production. We are researaching FEUD and will take the Sun-Tzu. Then we will build some Marketplaces, get the Republic and switch over.

We are researaching FEUD and will take the Sun-Tzu. Then we will build some Marketplaces, get the Republic and switch over.

I never liked Republic. I meen, if you are planning to make a great army with Crusaders & Sun-Tza academy, is Republic the best goverment?, with the 1 shield per unit & people angered because of troops away from home?

Thought about my game today. Lots of Options:

Modern Key Civ Theory suggests gifting all tech to the Mongols, but its counter-intuitive. And they are right next door. I try it out, Research cost drops from 360 to 240 beakers. (12 turns down to 8 turns)

Trading theory would have lots of boats (boat-chains) and start vanning the AI distant cities. Lighthouse and Magellan look useful. We can take Lighthouse if we want it.

Expansion theory would have Pike + Settlers colonizing islands. With Gr Wall in hand, cities would have a great shot at surviving. We'll have Feud soon.

None of these make the Republic look appealing just yet. But there is danger getting too settled into Monarchy -- too slow on the tech.

Taking out the French will be a priority. Once they are gone we will continue settling the home continent.

Most players who play early conquest stay in Monarchy for the reason you just mentioned. There are also people who like to play power democracy. With that style you try to stay in democracy and earn lot's of money with trade and taxes, a lot of cities and when at war easily can make a big army. to kill the AI-civ.

Now that i have read a lot of posts, i realize that i always play almost the same way, making the Statue of Liberty whenever i reach Democracy, and changing from Monarchy to Communism. Trying a mix of teching & making war. Next time ill try to make something different :p

GOTM 73, Day 2, Feb 21

Well, we will try to do it all. Settlers will be sent to colonize north side of Mongol Island, to make a path for vans to the Celts. French, we will try to take by force but without breaking word.

+ 30 We accept 200g for cease-fire with French; no peace treaty tho. Caravans arrive Satsuma for Lighthouse. We use some funds to IRB 2 Triremes. Neither one comes out Veteran.

Note French have just discovered PT -- expect elephant sneak attack soon.

50 FEUD-->SEA. Heading for Nav and Magellan.
60 1st CD in Izumo. Caravan changed to Horseman. Elvis for a turn. French elephant heading our way - expels our dip. They offer peace--rejected. Demand for tribute ignored. Trying to keep Spotless.
80 French catapult approach. Demand for tribute ignored but have them down to Icy. Caravans to Kyoto for Sun-Tzu which completes next turn.
90 Bribe French catapult. Legions land near Rhiems. Demand tribute--nothing. Settlers arrive on Mongol Island--on wrong square! Mongol horse present but relations are Enthusiastic so should be OK, but we can't get to preferred site.
110 Barbs land on Mongol Island--our settler will almost surely die. French--12g tribute. Can't get them to break treaty.
120 Settler dances away -- maybe can save with trireme? French 12g tribute.
130 Finally! French steal Literacy, War declared! Dip and Cat lost to elephant but Legions take Lyon--> PT. IRB Elephant in Nagasaki
140 GOD I AM DUMB. Left Lyon unguarded, taken by French warrior. My Legion (rehomed) gone; other Legion razes city. CRAP. 5 years of Rusty playing here. :mad:
150 Marseilles captured -->WHEEL. Trireme saves Settlers from Mongol Isle!
170 Another mouse slip costs me a Pikeman (attacks Fr Settlers by mistake and loses)
190 Barb Legions near our capital. War continues.
200 Orleans taken -- only Paris remains. And its working on Gr Library :lol: Barbs die easily.
210 Caravan pops HUT-->Settlers on an Island. Need to move off forest, will build next turn.
Marco used to trade some techs and maps. Have Chinese map now. Troops on Paris doorstep. We made two cities on Mongol Isle so far and have 3 triremes enroute foreign lands.
220 Paris taken; a city called Chartes to find now. Have a few CD and notice tech is 17 turns.
250 FRENCH DESTROYED. ONE OBJECTIVE ACCOMPLISHED. Viking Settler somewhere, sayeth Marco. 1st Caravan delivered to Madrid. Boat nears Celts, demand has changed! No city demands goods on that boat! More CD as we skipped Temples (due to King level) and dont have MONO yet. Gift several tech to Mongols to get them back to Enthusiastic. But not Feud. Some to Spanish also - they are not my key civ but tech time dropped 1 turn :confused:

Quit for the night. 24 techs, Republic coming soon. 23 cities, 3.7.0 12 turns. Pop 1.68 M. 397g to spend soon, not sure exactly what just now. 5 active triremes + some in production -- if change to Republic will need to watch home city to not lose any (especially loaded!) All civs ex Viking Enthusiastic. We are Supreme and Spotless.

All,

Reading thru the various forums I see a lot of v2.4.2 notes. I am using v2.7.8. Is this a problem? Should I have some type of different expectations? What's different between them? Thanks.

Agni.

2.42 is 'Classic'
2.7.8l is the 'Fantastic Worlds'
5.4.0f if "Multi-Player Gold'

The difference between the first two are fairly minor (IIRC)
The third version has a much more aggressive AI; their attitudes can change from the highest level to the lowest in one turn.

The lower versions cannot load games saved using the higher versions.

I myself tend to play using 2.7.8, since it has the more 'normal' AI attitudes and seems to be a bit less buggy than 2.42.

You can use any of the versions of the game to play and submit your games for the GOTM.

Hello to everyone

I've been playing civ2 off and on for years (since it first came out on ps1, and then pc version for last 6 years). I still keep coming back to it. This is my first GOTM, and last night I finished by conquering all nations. Funnily enough I think this is the first time I've finished that way instead of spaceship.

Those pesky french lost me years of expansion, after which I was going for spaceship, but changed my mind late on in the game and went for conquest, so I'm sure my score will be one of the lowest. Still I had fun which is the main thing and I'm looking forward to seeing other people's saves and comparing to mine.

Anyway, i have a question, does the last save have to be the end of the turn the game ends on, or the start of the turn? I saved it about half way through that turn, does it matter?

Your last save should be made right before you take the last AI city (or for Spaceship, the end of the turn before it lands).

If there is a lot that needs to be done between your save and taking the last city then the game may be sent back asking that you complete more of the turn in order for us to know what you may have done to finish.

Day 3, Sat Feb 24, 2007

Tech is kind of slow, so I will get a science city going with Copes Obs. Using a new (to me) technique I will use a 'downlist' city, not the capital. Republic will be done soon, but I will need Mike's to make the switchover. Also important for this game will be Nav and Magellan. If both MONO and NAV are available on the next list I will have a tough decision to make.

Strategically, I would like to own most of Mongol Isle, to be able to ferry-rail-ferry in a single turn to the Celts (What do you call the place where Celts live? Gaul? ) later on. At the same time I want to remain spotless and gift them tech (my key civ -- another first for me). It may be difficult to goad them into war. One thought is to revolt x2 all but their capital, but would prefer to leave them just one city in the SE corner of their isle (I won't genocide them). Ultimately the only RR path is thru Karakorum so it will have to be force.

Given the distance to China I think this will be a spaceship game. From what I can see, only Spain offers the hills that make for good SS production centers.

My caravans nearing Gaul will be dropped in the Celtic city with the Colossus. There is no demanding city nearby so that seems the best way to proceed. Will wait for next tech discovery, which is close.

Here we go....

+260 Hit Enter, Discover REP-->MONO. NAV was on the list too.
270 Demanded dye to Spain 104g. Undemand wool x2 to Armaugh (Colossus) 100g / 104g. City of Izumi on 2-whale cite.
280 HUT-->UNIV. Damn! Celts have that already! Barb city of Tours sighted.
290 Barb Leader in Tours killed for 150g.
300 Copes Obs in Edo. Library next. Tours destroyed.
310 City of Omi on Mongol Isle. IRB another trireme. RB Edo's Library.
Gave everyone REP and updated maps, including Vikings.
320 Mongols demand FEUD; give it to them. Not ready to rumble just yet; colonies vulnerable
330 MONO-->NAV. Gr Library in London. Caravans outside Madrid hold until Spanish form Republic and come out of Anarchy. HUT-->Legion. Home continent larger than expected.
340 Demanded Salt to Madrid 168g.
350 Demanded Salt to Seville 200g. Spanish and Celts are Republics. HUT-->Nomads
360 PRB Edo Caravan -- for trade not wonder. IRB a few Crusaders for Mongol Isle
370 NAV-->BB. Wasn't sure which way to go, have lots of rivers so this will help.
Several triremes-->caravels next turn. Begin Magellan. Cities of Sido and Naples.
380 Mongols form Republic. Celtic settler arrives island we need for canal city!
RB Mike's.
390 All Elvis fired. Cities of Issus and Cunaxa.
420 Mongols are down to Icy. Built canal city of Cremona, close to Celt city on empty isle.
IRB 2 extra crusaders for deployment.
430 Several vans, small payoffs even with demand. Mongols Icy. RB Courthouse in case they try revolt trick.
440 Mongols pay 75 tribute.
450 BB-->ToG, heading for Newton.
480 HUT-->BANK
490 Vikings destroyed by Barbs. Germans somewhere, sayeth Marco. MAGELLAN. Chain of move-6 ships reach from Japan to Gaul! Each with a different home city. Republic?
500 Demanded Silver 200+g. Other vans hold awaiting tech discovery.

Quit for the night. 35 cities, Monarchy 50-7, 8 turns. 30 Techs. 7 Wonders. pop 2.78M=2nd to Celts. Sci City makes 32b // 40b with scientist. Other govs are 3 Rep and 3 Desp. Home continent way larger than expected and could take many centuries to populate.

Agni Neres, on a couple of occasions you mentioned that hitting the wrong key caused you grief. When that happens to me I reload the auto-saved game which takes me back to the begining of the turn unless there has been some event, like battle, that I cannot reproduce.

Given how late I turned in my previous GOTM, this one had to be OCC.

I have played a lot of OCCs both as GOTMs and as private games. As OCCs go, this one was quite unusual:

1. Trade was achieved so late that I had about 230 shileds in my production box when I finally built Marco.
2. I made 6 alliances and kept them to the very end despite on going wars among the AI.
3. There was so much gift money that I bought over 200 shields towards Copernicus and over 300 towards Newton.

Agni Neres, on a couple of occasions you mentioned that hitting the wrong key caused you grief. When that happens to me I reload the auto-saved game which takes me back to the begining of the turn unless there has been some event, like battle, that I cannot reproduce.

Is that legal?

As a note, we usually prefer people do not post exact details of their scoring such as points/date combination or their GOTM score.

It has been removed from the post above.

Edit: While we're mentioned such things; any screenshots of the map or such should also be avoided.

OK. Learning as I go :)
