GOTM 75 Spoiler

The map is a bit complex , because all landmasses are the same.
The only way I could sort each Island was by using Alphabetical names , then the Island #....to avoid trading to any Island over 63. For Instance , since I was obligued to settle Islands North and South of starting location ....and I colonized all 9...the one on top Island 12 , was called Albania 12, then the next south Algeria 24, then Andorra 36 , Angola 18 and Argentina 60...
The last 4 , were called Armenia , Australia , Auckland ans Azazuna ..no numbers , since they are " 63 " , so I rarely used them for trade .
As Caravans were built , the last number , allow me to consider IF I wanted a Food or a Silk ..Copper Caravan..then get graet Pay outs.
As I conquered all other Civs , with the Exception of One cityto avoid restars , had to rename , all French , Spanish ...etc ..ruled by a North South bases.
After map was traded with Indians , shows that is 12 Columns of Islands , So I Used A. B . C etc....until L , to name my cities due to location ..thats makes my search very easy.
Besides that , its a fun Game.
I have my pet peeves....One is to build all 28 Wanders ,Build a 40.000 Ship and the third is to avoild losing Units.
So Far I have all 15 wonders in control , all 5 civs have one city with the exeption of Indians...they have 3...and so far I have not lost a SINGLE unit....
I By passed the Destroyer strategy..since I am in full command of the game. With Purple Back and having TWO Science cities ..due to the Fact that Spaniards Build Colossus and Japanese Copernicus , and having massive trade ....Techs are coming 1 per turn ....and I am just on 200 BC.
With all this islands will take a few turns to assemble a 40.000 ship....but right now , Im just taking a step at the time.

WOW! You managed to ally with 3 out of 4 rivals!

I went back to some of my old saves for some experimentation and no matter what I tired they would not want to ally with me. Of course, I did not have much to gift them with but you did not gift them a lot either. How did you manage to get these alliances?

If i remember right, the spanish were at war with the persians and me, I don't know if that would have mattered? All three civ's demanded a tech on first contact, which I gave them. Maybe swapping techs after signing peace treaty was enough to make them want alliance.

Overall, I caught up in power very quickly so didn't get that many gifts off them (maybe just the three at the start) and the alliances (apart from persians) ended by 1000bc, probably my constant asking for gifts when I was superior to them didn't help

The map is a bit complex , because all landmasses are the same.
OK, now I know what you mean by complex. The map is indeed hard to keep track of.
Quite creative. Using map analysis I knew right from the begining that we are dealing with 12 columns. To be able to keep track of things, I am naming my cities in each column after a different Civ2 civilization. For example, the column left to my home column all have Babylonian names, next one have German names, ...

I like your idea of a special designation for the ones numbered 63.

I changed the names , several times....
Then the column idea seems to work better in this Map.
Beacuse all Islands look the same , I though about adding the number at the end.
Still , have issues moving transports...in one turn I will move them north then next turn south....I lost 2 turns and Im on the same location.
I finally concluded that the ideal chain will be betwen 2 Island groups and get my Transports on Sentry..then wait for the Caravans...then pick them up....then get to the randevou point.
Had to attack my frineds , the Indians since they built SST..
Then I realized it wont make a difference....my Top Science City is Over 24...had to build a Collisseum and a Temple.
I am now on 1 AD....Techs are coming 1 per turn.
Trade Change is helping the deliveries.
Oil was just available bot wont be on demand until Automobil , Mass Production , Superhighways are built ...10 Cities are producing OIL
The Oil Carvanas will be station near Science City, and then delivered..
THat will add some 300 to 500 per turn I hope .
At this level will be able to raise 10.000 in a few turns
Structurals will be easy to build...1 dismanteled Rifleman and 1 Caravan ...
I need 39...
Building the rest of the SS will be a bit tough.
Im planning to build at least 20 Airports with that Money ....all concentrated on my top cities.
I think groups of 5 Airports ..and 2 Transports will do the trick to get my Modules ready.
Then I will get 4 cities on each Hexagon to work on the rest.

The city names are a problem for me as well, Turns are taking a long time and probably over half that time is spent working out wether a transport should go up / down. I've got a diagonal ship chain going nearly all the way from top right to bottom left, but having to pick up freight and meet the chain is time consuming.

I've never changed names before, but this is an exceptional map and now I'm getting city names appearing twice, I'm going to have to do it. I've thought about adding a grid reference to the start, excel style i.e. A5 Rome.

Also the AI's aren't building aquaducts? They have construction and surplus food but so far the seem content to stay at size 8, and have 5 or 6 cities trying to build the same wonder. This is limiting Caravan/freight deliveries. I'm going to have to start trading with myself. If they don't build aquaducts soon I might as well capture their cities.

 I had just finished mapmaking and sent settlers out to settle, when the spanish showed up and walked into my empty capital to end the game. I didn't save my log, but it was much earlier than what you ran into. For some reason the -3600s comes to mind but I could be wrong. It happened a couple weeks ago.

It's been years since I lost a game (under similar, early-game situation) and when it happens, it's at warlord level. Go figure. :crazyeye:

Sincere condolences to Tim, Agni, Ali and any other victims of the Spanish and/or Persians. It's impractical to defend all these little islands in the opening, so IMO losing cities this way is just bad luck - not a result of poor play. Looks like Ali made a remarkable comeback afer losing Rome.

I didn't get the hut-AT, and lost two cities (and supported boat + ele + van). One was actually defended, but only with a warrior. That was around 2500BC, so I had enough other cities to play on. I was even a bit lucky the Spanish didn't take a third city at the same time.

Now I am plodding thru the industrialization phase (1280BC) when bonuses are small. Not much to do, except build Wonders and wait for transports and freight to make trading fun again.

In general, I agree with you. The risk of losing cities early on is not worth the cost of defense. However, this case was different, and we should have known better. Top 5 cities showed 5 Japanese cities. It was reasonable to assume all rivals have that many cities. We had no way of knowing what techs they had, but it was not a stretch to think that the scenario designer has given them some techs as well. Thus it was reasonable to conclude that they may be visiting us with their unsinkable triremes soon.

All we needed to do was to protect our cities with a single warrior. All 3 of us who lost our capital left it defenseless and the AI just walked in. We were unlucky too. I ran some experiments afterwards and noticed another possibility. Even though in all cases I was visited by the Spanish in -3500 or -3480, some times they would land and demand a tech and then offer peace if I complied. A single warrior would have eliminated the first possibility.

Looks like Ali made a remarkable comeback afer losing Rome.
Thanks for the compliment. I am glad I did not give up on the game.

a 1ad launch is probably still possible...

I'm also at 1000BC: 88 cities, about 75% have at least aqueduct+harbor. 57 advances, 14 WoWs, pop 65m, 85 frieights, 46 transports, democracy. Peace with all AI, 7 cities each, they have 7 WoWs total.

I've been getting one advance per turn for quite a while, so a 1AD launch looks very likely (except that I didn't know Magic's trick until reading this spoiler, so I'll probably not take advantage of that). Without any clear goal to play for, except bigger cities, my game is starting to feel like a Blue Star marathon - not my favorite style. There is also the problem of finishing on time... I am probably spending - wasting? - an hour per turn, mainly on trade and RB's. Gotta cut that down to 20 minutes or so.

Oh yeah... there was also a technical problem with my game. I noticed that my cities were not growing under democracy/celebration, even with aqueducts/etc. Thought it was some quirk of warlord level, at first. But I restarted Civ2, and then the cities started growing again. (?)

@ Magic Gorter:

Building Darwins near the end was a good tactic, makes maximum use of it because of the high beaker cost at that point, wish I'd thought of that.

@ Peaster:

Actually I wrote that about a week ago but didnt get round to posting it until saturday, but I finally launched over the weekend. I didn't manage 1ad because I wanted a 400 point spaceship, and I got caught up in other things, eventually wasting quite a few turns. The turns were taking an hour for me as well, it got a bit repetitive at times, but all in all a different challenge to other games.

I will do this in OCC games all the time. I will wait as long as possible before building it to get it where it saves the most turns. If I get notification that it will be built next turn, I will rush it right away so I can pick the techs. This will sometimes waste 1 turn's beakers, but it's still a free tech-and-a-half at that point. Sometimes if I've crossed a turns-per-tech threshold that I think I will stay at (e.g., costs just went up from 2 to 3 turns), I'll just build it then to maximize value. Otherwise, it gets slotted in right before the last-minute improvements to boost production as space flight approaches.

It amazes me how many more tricks there are to learn. I built Darwins at the worst possible time, as soon as possible and only a few beakers away from discovering a new tech. I mistakenly thought the beakers remaining carried forward, but they don't. I guess if you plan it right you can get the 3 techs in a turn I was after.

Though not related, I ran into a puzzle of my own. Somehow one of my transports disappeared. Looking back at my saves I narrowed the range to a 4-turn period during which the said transport just vanished. I was not at war with anyone, there was no barbarian activity, it could not have been bribed as I am in democracy, I did not disband it, and I do not recall a pop up telling me about it being disbanded (which happens when there are not enough shields at the home city).

Later in the game, I seem to have lost a freight. I did not bother to investigate details on this one, but I do have notes of wine produced by Shanghai which later is neither present nor delivered.

I had also one problem when I played. When building the spaceshipparts with the zoom to home city trick....the game crashed. Luckily I had the save before that moment. The next attempt I had no problems. Don't know what caused the problem. The only thing I did differently is not to RB the parts for all the cities and then actually build it....but one city a time.

I played till +1 over the weekend. It was mostly peaceful expansion, trading, and wonder building. My expansion is about to slow as there are only 6 city sites left, 4 of them on the south pole.

Back in -700 when I lost the race for Michelangelo to Persians it did not affect me much due to the fact that my cities were mostly small and at this level there are 5 happy citizens per city. Another thing that eased the pain was the fact that I inherited Oracle from the Spanish. But now it hurts big time and is slowing my growth. Fortunately, the Persians did not build it in their capital. I just need to save some money and bribe it away.
