What was your path to victory?

What was your path to victory?

What victory? :(

Against three fanatic enemies and three neutrals who kept getting upset because I wouldn't sever relations with the other neutrals, I just couldn't make headway. The starting stack ended up stunting the Mongol growth, but all the other AI surpassed me in score, GNP, manufacturing, science...everything that mattered.

My one serious effort at a Great Wonder ended with Germany beating me to the GLH by about six turns.

Much later...I had just sunk a Malinese ironclad (at the cost of an ironclad and two frigates) when my rifles saw infantry approaching on transports, so I accepted the inevitable defeat by retiring in 1814.

This was a really tough game.

War weariness almost killed the game. After getting Constitution, I switched to Rep/Caste, and had massive happiness problems everywhere. After 5 turns of suffering, I revolted back to HR.
Just before the Malinese died, I was getting -16 unhappiness from war weariness in my Cap.

Beelined Cossacks, and mass whipped the empire, but it was still really slow going. The first troops took on the Malinese, but were very soon simply trying to hold the first beachhead cities from the waves of Mongols & Malinese troops.

Once the Mailinese were finally vanquished, the war weariness improved somewhat, but not by too much. The Germans and the Mongols were much quicker affairs. I actually dropped a few Cossacks in german territory just to harass him, and they took 3 cities. Reinforcements included cannons and the germans didn't last too much longer. Mongols were being eradicated when victory was achieved.

Most of the Mongols cities were gifted to the Romans, to lift them to be my UN opponents. Luckily for me Alex loved me, he was the only AI to keep open borders with me the whole game. Both the romans and americans closed them multiple times, which screwed with my trade route income.

Anyway, I enjoyed this game a great deal. Thanks DS for creating it and giving me the chance to play it.

Fun game - though I had lots of set backs!

Germany fell easily, but Alex settled the stone just before I could reach it!

I claimed the dye site, but some turns later the Mongols had marched a stack through Greece and burned it!

When I was ready to resettle Alex had a city there!

Slowly eliminated the Mongols. The Malinese did walk a lot of troops through Rome, until I convinced Caesar to close borders, but they suicided against my city defenders not causing any war weariness. :crazyeye:

After the Mongols was gone, my veteran Cossacks had no problems with the Malinese. :)

Plan was to give the Americans a city with the UN while trying to please Alex and Caesar. This worked very well, I had 2 GE and founded a city at the American border, hurried the UN and gave the city to Roosevelt. BIG mistake!
I had forgotten that the UN has to be actually build and then given to the AI, otherwise there's no guarantee they will finish it, especially not if they don't have Mass Media

New plan was to go for the cow while slowly building a spaceship. This seemed to work quite well, but centuries later when Roosevelt did build the UN, I was tired and took the easy diplo win with Alex and Caesar voting for me. :crazyeye:

Quickly decided against Domination as too problematic. Not sure it was possible. Went UN(1660). Captured three civs and worked to balance research with maintenance costs.

Tough, tedious game. Interesting challenge from DS, but I'm pleased to see that next month's should be considerably shorter, especially since another XGOTM has started.

Another game I had to abandon due to time constraints... :( Was hoping for a very late UN victory in the end but ran out of time.

Made a couple of big mistakes. First was building a city on Mansa's coast which I had no chance of keeping with the stacks attacking it. I lost a lot of hammers trying to keep it.

Second. Was my first attempt at Bismark. Not enough troops and my re-inforcements were to late getting there so another loss of lots of troops for no real gain.

Ended up wiping out Kublai, Mansa was down to an island city somewhere and had started on Bismark. War weariness was a killer in this game though. Would have to go back and check but think it was up to the 30s in the capital.

Have to start this months GOTM early and see if I can finish it in time. :)

Edit: Managed to finish the game with a UN victory circa 1960. Should have remembered the Ghandi game from a while back as regards over extending yourself.. :)

Also submitted an incomplete game in the 1500's out of respect for staff and mapmaker. Due to RL constraints, I ran out of time to finish what could be a very late culture finish date.

At that point, Mansa had been eliminated, and my Cossacks had KK down to 3 cities, while Bismarck had 5 or 6 left - I left him for last but had already razed a couple of his cities. I wasn't playing well, but was enjoying the part of the game I was able to play, though.

Would like to try to finish it sometime just for fun, but there are 3 fresh new XOTM's waiting to be downloaded and opened right now...:)
