GOTM 89 - Final Spoiler

"Diplo victory - 1.940 BC" + "I arrived late to Space Race, and then I try the Mess Media."
How are results like this (& some others) possible?
How can anyone/civ be working on Space race &/or Mass Media while still in BC?
I must be WAY behind in working this game.

My pathetic little attempt started with taking a worker from Germs & hanging around his lands long enuf to slow his expansion. Then made friends with everyone else. Jumped English & Russians with help from Americans. Frankly was surprised Germs or Amer's never attacked me.

Obvious that Dom was not possible & Diplo unlikely, so cranked up the culture. Turned 2 Germ cities to me. Amer's were #1 in nearly everything so was hard to match them. They (& Germ's) started space race. Had 2 cities at Legend & was set to beat America's space try by 3 turns. They built last component, Stasis Chamber, & IMMEDIATELY were declare the winner!?
Instantly flew to Alpha Cent? = huh?
Is this a function of plain Civ 4?

Don't know where else to express this.

Sure be nice to play the best & most refined version... BTS. Rather than regress to earlier versions that many (most?) of us stopped playing years ago & thus don't know small but KEY rules that used to be.

Plus BTS has more options, wonders, & paths to victory. A few random events/villages/quests could spice things up & get away from these fancy semi-chess games of pure logic & know-every-rule, routine games.

What say, anyone?

Can anyone submit/create a GofM? Or does one need to be part of some inner group?

@kenwyn

From your post, I suspect you have not realized this. There are 3 different series running:

GOTM is for the vinilla version of the game
WOTM for the warlord version
BOTM for the beyond the sword expansion

Certainly, the last is the most popular of the 3 (base on average number of submissions), but the other 2 have a significant following as well.

Hi kenwyn, there are significant differences between the variants, as you discovered with the Spaceship. They have been compiled in a great list here

We maintain all 3 variants partly to mix it up and provide some variety. Some people much prefer Vanilla to BtS.

We also do try to have some variety of games, with different options enabled for different games. There has always been an aversion to huts though, as a lucky hut can make or break a game.

Hey Neil, thanks a lot for the support :)! I still have much to learn, so I can’t consider myself as a great player .
You guys make even Deity look so much easy :worship:…
