GOTM - tech support

I'm relatively new to this site and I'm amazed by the number of adicts and the loads of information. Good for you!

I would like to join the GOTM competitions but I am having a hard time understanding the links and information regarding what to do. I'm not very technical and I wonder if there's a help-file or a thread or a link which is clear for dummies like me and really helps to get me going.

I'm playing Civ III with the latest patch installed (1.29) and have recently installed Conquests.

What should I do?

If you want to play the GOTM the first place you should go is to the home page. You can find it here: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/

Read the rules so that you understand what is permitted.

GOTM cannot currently be played in Conquests. However, if you have Conquests you are still able to play in Civ ver. 1.29.

From the GOTM home page you will see the instructions for the prior games. In order to play GOTM 26 you must download and install certain extra files (called game packs) from the prior games 21, 24 and 25. It will take you a little while to do this but will get you set up to play future games. If you have any trouble with the installations, just come back here a post your difficulties.

In addition to Zagnut's sage advice, the most common problem that people have installing these files is that they don't install them to the right directory.

Read the instructions carefully, and you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a technical question too.

I had no problems for loading the game, etc,
and I succesfully lost my GOTM27.

I want to submit my game,
but I'm not sure about registering.

It says you have to send the game in a zip file,
using registered name.
but how do you register ?
I have been through the whole GOTM site without finding a hint.

So am I to use my CivFanatics Id ?

It depends on which version of Civ you are running. The following quote from the gotm28 game page states it pretty explicitly:

If you have not previously recently played and completed a GOTM game, then download the "Gotm21 Total Install" first and then add the Add-On packs for Gotm22, Gotm23, Gotm24 and then add on the Gotm25 game pack that matches your software. You can download the Game Packs from the game pages in the menu at the left hand side of this page. Please pay close attention to matching the game pack versions to the software version that you are playing as this will eliminate 95% of all the errors that have been observed in the past games.

Macintosh installlers are available in this thread.
