I'll be out of town for a couple of days, so I'm posting the final spoiler as well. There was more land in this map than normal ... and more civs; any problem bringing this game to a successful conclusion or did the AI pose a challenge?

Predator/SS Effort,
I was in the Middle Ages in 825 BC and the scientific civs had gotten Monotheism and Feudalism. I was unable to trade them right away so started on Engineering. Unable to establish a trade network with the others for a long time, I relied on happiness wars. I had 3-4 happiness wars going on at the same time during most of the MA, starting with Arabia, Mongols and Babylon by 550 BC. Soon after that Greece joined the club.

In 490 BC Veii completed the Forbidden Palace. In 450 BC I declared on the Celts and started my golden age. In 310 Rome got a university. I had a grand total of 11 legionaries when Entremont was taken in 270 BC. The new palace was hurried immediately with my first leader. In 190 BC The Celts were gone.

Only in 110 BC did I trade Feudalism. With legionaries, who needs it?

I proceeded to reduce Greece to two towns before the next era switch (400 AD,) securing incense and spices and making wines available for trade. The Greeks were dangerously small, and soon at war with Babylon, the AI big boy. I was a bit concerned that Greece would be eliminated before they had given me all their free techs: For a long time, the Greeks had a settler reeling around in my part of the world, but eventually they seemed to lose it because of insufficient upkeep. I had, however, given them a northern island town which it would take ages for the Babs to reach, and in the Industrial Age I blocked it from invasion by means of ROP and troops.

I carved on eastwards, leaving Korea alive but eventually eliminating all civs except the scientific ones, using a small number of cavalries with a very low death toll.

A depressing moment was when a barb galley prevented me from learning Atomic Theory in 4 turns. I should have known since it was hanging around Rome which had all the science wonders plus Colossus.

Free techs in the IA were Medicine and Nationalism, in the Modern ages all the first layer techs plus Miniaturization (using ToE of course).

My result was SS victory in 1300 AD, just shy of 9000 jason points. Very mediocre. I thought I'd get more points but I guess I reached the domination limit too late, waiting for The Intenet to put me close to the limit.

I thought a scientific Rome (mind-boggling, really) would work with 4 scientific AIs but I realized that the commercial trait is pathetic in science games: Say for example that you have 10 actual cities or metropoles (size 7 or bigger.) The center tiles then yield 10 extra coins total. This is not much at all because by the time you have that many cities it is likely that you are already powerful enough for 4 turn research even if you are not commericial. And in the important Ancient Age you hardly have any cities at all in a normal game. The shield rebate for harbours (why not for markets, one wonders) is also insignificant.

I had hopes of turning in a winning effort this time. By 1830 AD I had over 70k culture and generated about 700 per turn. Ended up at war with the world which didn't bother me since I held all the land west of the narrows (where Korea once lived in my game). It should have bothered me because China built the UN and all the AI voted for Mao. :(

775 bc - 420 ad

The Aztecs have Monarchy (an important bargaining tool), but the price they ask is simply too much for now. Next turn, the Celts are in MA as well and barb uprisings begin. I send a squad of 5 legionaries northward, to sit and defend on the mountains until the horseman wave is over, and they end up all in elite status.

Meanwhile, the invasion of Greece goes on. Delphi does not fit with the future RCP5 around Sparta, so i raze it and build in its place the port city of Jerusalem, which becomes the far end of the first of the many galley chains i've used through the game.

In 710 bc i sign a phony peace with Greece in return for a city. I need them at peace for their scientific free pick. Next turn, with research zeroed so far, i'm finally able to buy Monarchy without forking out too much gpt. Then i proceed immediately to sell/gift the scientific AS into middle ages:

- Babylon is already in the MA with Feudalism.
- the Ottomans draw Feudalism too
- Korea draws Monotheism
- Greece draws Engineering

The important part here is that both Babylon and Korea are still in despotism! Babylon could have traded Feudalism for Republic but didn't, probably because i sold it earlier to the Ottomans, making it too discounted to be exchanged with a monopoly MA tech. The greedy attitude of the AS on techs this time backfires:

- Babylon gives Feudalism for Republic + Monarchy
- Korea gives Monotheism for Feudalism + Republic + Monarchy
- Greece gives Engineering for Monotheism + Feudalism + Monarchy
- finally, the Aztecs are sold Monotheism and the big lump sum paid for Monarchy comes back home :)

With this trade, the quest for techs is basically settled for the time being. I start on Chivalry at very low rate, because knights aren't really necessary right now. Moreover, i choose not to upgrade existing legionaries, a large part of them is in elite status and the remaining veterans are still useful to deter skirmishers.

Next goals are: obtain the Great Lighthouse, secure the whole of Greece/Babylon, build the RCP around Sparta and move the capital once the FP in Veii is built and the new core is sufficiently developed. Two leaders are necessary: one for the Lighthouse and one for the capital jump. A third one to build Sun Tzu would be highly useful: with free barracks on the whole world it will be possible to heal and rush units even in distant lands. With so many elite units and so many battles to fight, there's a very high chance to succeed.

War with Greece is resumed. Meanwhile i open a 2nd front with the Celts: except for the area around Entremont their land is in a sorry state, and i need it settled and roaded to launch from there the future invasions oversea.

670 bc: war vs. Greece
630 bc: war vs. Celts
550 bc: 1st leader comes. Greece is eliminated. Forbidden Palace is completed in Veii.
530 bc: rushed Great Lighthouse in Jerusalem. Safe routes across the ocean become available.

Next target is obviously Babylon. Almost all the elite units are on the Babylonian front, yet the second leader comes from a victory in the Celtic campaign. A few espionage missions are performed: lots of AS are on Sun Tzu, with Babylon in clear lead with about 2/3 of it completed. Rushing Sun Tzu now should cause Babylon to cascade to Pyramids... which is exactly what happens. A few turns later, the city of Babylon is captured and Rome enjoys both free barracks and free granaries everywhere :D

450 bc: war with Babylon
350 bc: Sun Tzu rushed in Athens
330 bc: Babylon completes Pyramids
270 bc: captured Babylon

During the Babylonian campaign i stop training maces and begin with horsemen. At first, horse units are sent abroad, to be used as station troops in the conquered lands, allowing the whole bulk of legions/mi to be sent in combat. One of those horses gains elite status by killing off an enemy warrior and is promoted to battlefront duties. Ironically, it's that very lone elite horse, and not one of the many legionaries, to provide the 3rd leader in one of the last battles against Babylon. Since it's too early to jump the capital, the leader is parked in Sparta, even if it means wasting the remaining elite victories. Better safe than sorry.

At the same time, more horsemen are being amassed in the western coast, where a galley buildup also is in place. The plan is to upgrade the horsemen later and send them across the ocean to dispose of China.

190 bc: Chivalry is researched, some 1600 golds are spent into a mass-upgrade of horsemen.
170 bc: Babylon is gone
150 bc: China asks for Chivalry and declares upon refusal.
_90 bc: The Celts are destroyed, after having survived as OCC for a while.

Still in 90 bc war with the Aztecs begin. Galleys are used to transport slow units to the northern coast while knights make their way in the southern coast, mainly free of jungles. The Aztecs cities fall one after another.

50 bc: a fleet of galleys loaded with knights sets the sails for China. Capital jump to Sparta, income rises substantially.
30 bc: captured Tenochtitlan, which sports the Oracle
10 bc: troops unloaded outside the coastal city of Shangai, invasion of China has begun
50 ad: the Aztecs are destroyed

Gone the Aztecs, it's time for Korea. They have suffered greatly from barb uprisings and their land is for the most part undeveloped. Once again, galleys prove useful to move quickly legionaries and maces. Knights are being amassed on the SE tip of the former Aztec land, where, with the help of another galley buildup, they will be transported later by sea to strike at the hearth of the Ottoman empire.

During the Chinese campaign, another leader is generated. A phony peace is signed, in return for Invention, and Leonardo's is rushed in Beijing. The chinese landmass is fairly well roaded, it has horses but no iron, therefore, until a harbor is built, it is possible to produce horsemen there for another later mass-upgrade. A fifth leader comes from the Korean campaign, and an army is formed and used in combat.

_90 ad: war with Korea
130 ad: peace with China for Invention
150 ad: Leo's rushed in Beijing
210 ad: last Chinese city falls but there are at least 2 wandering settlers on the Arabian/Ottoman area.
230 ad: Korea is gone

It's now time to take on Mongolia. Forces from both former Korea and China are used, and the Mongol forces are simply overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Another leader comes and is used for the Heroic Epic. Karakorum, sporting the Great Library, is owned and we get knowledge of Theology from it.

250 ad: war vs. Mongolia
260 ad: rushed Heroic Epic
290 ad: owned Karakorum, Great Library

Another leader is used to rush Sistine Chapel. More free culture for us. While we're still fighting the Mongols, the buildup of galleys on the SE tip of Azteca is complete and we send another naval expedition to strike the Ottomans directly at their core:

300 ad: learned Theology, rushed Sistine, war with Ottomans
310 ad: failed attack at Sogut!
320 ad: captured Sogut, sporting the Hanging gardens
330 ad: Mongolia is destroyed. Arabia demands Theology and declares upon refusal.

While the battle goes on, one last naval invasion is under preparation to get rid of Arabia, but this time i've made the mistake of keeping the galley chain to China alive for too long. Therefore, i found myself with excess troops in the Mongol/Chinese area (some of which didn't have time to reach Arabia), a little short of knights in the SW tip of former Celtica and with the galley fleet late to reposition itself. This strategic error probably costed me 3-4 turns.

340 ad: captured Najran (Great Wall) and Mecca.
350 ad: owned the new Chinese OCC, but they're still alive! -.-
380 ad: finally, the chinese boat settler is intercepted and sunk, China is destroyed
400 ad: last Ottoman city falls, but they have a boat settler too!
410 ad: Ottoman boat settler sunk, last Arabian city falls, Ottomans and Arabia destroyed
420 ad: conquest

The end result is a conquest in 420 ad, with a Firaxis score of 8493 and a Jason score of 11170.

The notable aspect of this scenario has been the great strategic value of a good navy combined with the benefits of the Great Lighthouse, in spite of being a pangea map. Galleys were paramount from the very beginning, being the only praticable way to reach Greece/Babylon in a reasonable time. Moreover, without naval invasions it would have been impossible to take over China, Ottomans and Arabia so quickly, and none of those routes would have been safe without the help of the Great Lighthouse.

Here's the tech log of the middle ages:

_710bc: Monarchy (Aztecs), Feudalism (Babylon), Monotheism (Korea), Engineering (Greece);
_190bc: Chivalry (research);
_130ad: Invention (extorted, China)
_300ad: Theology (Great Library)

and the kill log:

_550bc: Greece
_170bc: Babylon
__90bc: Celts
__50ad: Aztecs
_230ad: Korea
_330ad: Mongols
_380ad: China
_410ad: Ottomans
_410ad: Arabia

I had a hard time with this one. Winning the game was no problem. The AI were pushovers. I went for a spaceship launch and it felt like the game was dragging. I thought I traded pretty good but I completely messed up placing my palace and FP. It was a disaster.

Launch in 1355AD. Firaxis: 5317, Jason: 8298.

I had hoped with 4 scientific civs that I would be able to capture at least the 1st teir techs from every age, but that bombed. I managed to leverage republic against Korea in the Middle Ages to gain feud & engineering. Babs don't pick up mono until 170BC.

Get to the IA in 460AD but 1 draws nationalism and 3 draw medicine. I research steam and every other IA tech and because of my poor palace/FP placement I can't do better than a 5t research for most of the IA.

Get to the MA in 1160 AD and the AI draws rocketry & computers. That's nice because I want computers so that ToE can grab mini & nukes and put me on a 4t research track. This works out but I research the remaining MA techs myself, even Ecology because the AI is busy researching Free Artistry. :wallbash:

Some wars in the MA make a mess of things but nothing huge.

This was a fun game. For a long time one or the other of the AI's had the upper hand - at first the Mongols, who conquered China and some of Korea, later the Celts who were next-door neighbors, and finally the Ottomans and Arabs. Until the 1800s the question of survival until the end of the game was open, and it wasn't until the late 1900s that a plan for victory emerged. It also was one of the few times I was fighting a more advanced AI in the Modern Age and one of the first games that I'd had with nuclear war - possibly the first in which the AI initiated the nuclear exchanges.

Log:

Spoiler Early Times :
3000 BC - Found veii; may not have been best location but turned out to be a real fortress thanks to the hills.
825 BC - Build The Colossus in Rome.
610 BC - Celts build The Pyramids which I'd hoped to build, lost due to the barbarian invasions.
1st Century BC - Mongols declare war on me; I buy an alliance with China. By the end of this century the Mongols have already destroyed one Chinese city.
270 AD - Beijing falls to Mongols; Mongols definitely dominant regional power.
330 AD - Wonsan destroyed in First Korean-Mongol war; Mongols expanding their power.
430 AD - Found Palmyra in unclaimed land within striking distance of Entremont, the Celtic capital.
670 AD - In the Second Roman-Mongol war, Mongolia captures Palmyra. This is kind of bad; their Keshiks appeared out of nowhere and took the city in one turn.
690 AD - Forced to turn over Hispalis to the Mongols for peace.

The Mongol-Roman War Era was a low point for us, with large amount of the Empire falling to the barbaric Mongols hordes. Legions would save the day, but the Keshiks very nearly had us.

Spoiler Mongol-Roman War Era :
810 AD - The Mongols start the Third Roman-Mongol war. We enter a Golden Age thanks to a Legionary victory, but lose Lutetia right away.
830 AD - Brundisium falls. The next city up the eastern coast is Rome.
850 AD - Pompeii and Antium both fall. Veii is alone and surrounded but well defended. Cumae and Rome are both in serious danger.

Jan2012GOTM_860AD.png

890 AD - The Roman Legions recapture Antium.
900 AD - The Roman Legions recapture Brundisium, but a naval invasion force takes Pisae from us (in the northwest).
930 AD - Palmyra culture-flips from the Mongols to the Celts.
950 AD - Pisae is recaptured. We're still spread a little thin but our Legions are gaining the upper hand over their Keshiks. We've depended on their defence as well, so it's a good thing we did have Legions rather than Swordsmen.
980 AD - Pompeii recaptured. Smith's Trading Company completed in Rome. Say whaat? Yup. We were beelining the upper techs so we could avoid Feudalism and keep our Roman Legions in service. Smith's was already well underway during the war so we finished it.
990 AD - The town of Eridu falls to the Mongols in the First Babylonian-Mongol war.
1000 AD - Lutetia recaptured; Babylon retakes Eridu.
1020 AD - Hispalis recaptured; all Mongol conquests (except Palmyra) retaken. Rome is triumphant in the 3rd Roman-Mongol War, albeit at a high cost.
1080 AD - The First Aztec-Mongol war starts. The Aztecs get a Golden Age but soon begin losing territory.
The First Roman-Celtic War starts as our Legions attempt to take Mohacs. The Celts have recently entered the Industrial Age and we figure we have the best shot of winning a war while we have a lot of Legions and they don't yet have Riflemen.
1090 AD - Our attack fails miserably against their Musketmen, and in their counterattack they get a Golden Age. I still maintain that the odds were favorable in the attack, but either way we lost.
1180 AD - Bablyon takes a city from the Mongols that they had taken from the Aztecs. The Mongols would retake it 40 years later, but it's another hint that the Mongols' power may be waning.
1100's sometime - Manage to fight the Celts to a standstill and get a truce. Ugly war that weakened both sides. Celts brought in the Aztecs against me and I'm still at war with them.
1255 - Capture the Aztec city of Xochicalco, near Athens.
1295 - Take Tlacopan.
1305 - Mongols take Tzintzuntzen (say that 10 times fast). The Aztecs are falling from both the south (Rome) and the north (Mongols) and appear to be headed to oblivion.
1310 - Take Tlatelolco.
1325 - Take Tlaxcala. Tenochitlan is next, and only one city remains after that.
1337-ish - The Mongols decide that they aren't satisfied with what they can take from the Aztecs, and want their whole former territory. Thus, they decide to start the Fourth Roman-Mongol War! This is bad, as while our force is big enough to take Aztec cities, it isn't big enough to fight off the Mongols and their Keshiks. We also haven't been building all military, as we've been trying to build up some infrastructure back home (we're pretty pitiful in this regard generally).
1355 - Tlatelolco falls to the Mongols.
1360 - Tlacopan falls to the Mongols.
1365 - Tlaxcala and Caesaraugusta (coastal city way far up north) fall to the Mongols.
1370 - In the First Ottoman-Mongol war, the Mongols get a great leader.
1375 - Caesaraugusta recaptured. Our ally Greece takes a Mongol city that's separate from the other Mongol posessions.
1380 - Ottomans enter a Golden Age.
1385 - Babylon begins conquering Korea.
1390 - Tlacopan falls from Rome first to the Mongols, then to Babylon, and finally to Greece, all in one turn. Babylon's kind of at war with everyone right now.
1395 - Tlacopan falls to Babylon again. It's in the middle of everything.
1400 - We retake Tlacopan.
1415 - Korea regains their lost land, as Babylon is too busy fighting their only neighbor, Greece.
1420 - Tlacopan falls to the Mongols, who get another Great Leader in the east.
1425 - In the Greek-Mongol war, the city of Thermopylae falls to the Mongol hordes, but Greece enters a Golden Age thanks to the heroic defence by the Hoplites there.

Meanwhile, Xochicalco also falls to the Mongols, and the Mongols get a Great Leader their, which they use to build an army.

1435 - We attack the Mongol Army in Xochicalco with our finest troops, kill the army, and get a Great Leader of our own. We fail to take the city, however, and our troops are largely defeated, so our leader must run quickly through Greek lands back to our homeland to avoid being captured.

The Celts subsequently take Xochicalco, their first conquest in the First Celtic-Mongol war.

Then comes the period of Celtic ascension and war with the Celts. Again, we are in danger of losing too much land:

Spoiler Celtic War Time :
1440 - Hispalis defects to the Celts. Our culture is pretty mediocre.
1455 - The Arabians begin their first conquests against the Mongols, in former Aztec lands.
1460 - By now the Celts clearly have the upper hand on the Mongols, due to superior technology, and are establishing themselves in former Aztec lands.
1465 - Another great Mongol leader.
1495 - Almarikh, a Mongol heartland city, falls to the Celts, the first loss of a contiguous city for the Mongols. This one is probably due to a naval invasion and is a temporary loss.
1515 - Erdenet falls from the Mongols to the Koreans. This city was on the Mongol-Korean border, so represents a more serious loss.
1520 - The Ottomans get a Great Leader while fighting the Mongols.
1525 - The Celts begin permanent conquests in the Mongol heartlands.
1540 - The Ottomans begin moving into the Mongol heartlands.
1600 - By now the Mongols are clearly defeated. They still have a few cities, but little power. The Celts have taken the lion's share, with the Ottomans most of the rest. The Chinese also resettled some lands they'd lost earlier.
1620 - Karkorum is razed.
1650 AD - The Celts declare war on us, having taken all they care for from the Mongols. Lutetia is razed straighaway and a celtic city built in its place.
1720 AD - The Celts create Hoover Dam. Our war with them is turning into a bitter stalemate, with the edge towards the Celts. Their Cavalry are invading our lands along with a few Guerillas (they lack Rubber), while we fight them off with Cavalry, Legionaries, and Riflemen of our own, but in much smaller numbers, and with the help of terrain.
1730 - The Celts take Thermopylae from the Babylonians (whom it ended up with).
1740-ish: We make peace with the Celts, as well as the Arabs and Ottomans who had joined them.
1750 - 1770s: Bablyon is conquered by the Celts and Arabs.
1770 - I declare war on the Mongols and take Ereen, one of their cities on that island in the north. As we were just barely able to defend ourselves against the Celts last time, we want an offshore area that doesn't border them as somewhere we can fall back to if need be. We've already been almost catastrophically defeated twice (to the Mongol hordes and to the Celts).
1778 - The last Bablyonian city falls, making them the first civilization to be defeated (the Aztecs are still in control of Tenochitlan). The Celts took most of their lands.
1780 - I finish the conquest of that island up north and get a Great Leader out of it.

The next century and a half feature a Great War-like war with the Celts which we win, but is not super-eventful:

Spoiler 1800's - 1950's :
1800 - At the start of the century, the Celts are undoubtedly the most powerful country on Earth as well as the most advanced (being in the Modern Age already), and are also my only neighbor. And they decide to start a war with me.
1810 - First Ottoman-Arabic war begins; Ottomans conquer Arabic city in former Aztec lands.
1812 - I capture Hispalis. Infantry and Artillery are the key, but even so things aren't going that great. The Mongols are shelling our coasts to smithereens and bombing out all the roads in our south, making progress very slow. They also are causing riots by bombing luxuries.
1826 - The Celts build the U.N. They also take a Korean city, in their latest conquests. No elections would ever be held. Everyone hated Brennus thanks to my diplomacy, and after I took the U.N., I knew my reputation wasn't good enough to count on winning.
1830 - China enters a Golden Age after their Riders take a city that had defected back to the Aztecs last century.
1840 - China jumps on the anti-Korean bandwagon and takes one of their cities. Both countries are fairly backwards, but China more so.
1844 - We take Verulamium, a city which had been a metropolis but is now a village. Shortly afterwards we make peace with the Celts, collecting reparations. Our infrastructure is once more in ruins, but at least we have sufficient Infantry to defend ourselves.
1848 - The Chinese take a Celtic city in former Aztec lands. They shouldn't really be fighting the Celts, though.
1858 - The Arabs take a Celtic city in former Mongol lands. By now the Arab-Ottoman war has died down, essentially a stalemate.
1866 - Korea is being conquered by the Celts and Ottomans, while the Arabs continue to take Celtic cities in Mongol lands.
1872 - The Celts take the last Chinese city in former Aztec lands. Korea has regained its defences.
1900 - The Celts are no longer dominant in Mongol lands, but control most of the former Aztec lands. They are still the foremost power in the world, but the Arabs are establishing themselves quite well in the east.
1900 - 1930: The Arabs begin gaining the upper hand on the Celts, taking a few cities in Aztec lands, and even Korea takes a city.
1938 - Arabia enters a Golden Age thanks to a belated Ansar Warrior victory, but loses their last city in Aztec lands.
1948 - The Arabs complete SETI Program.
1950 - The past half-century consisted mainly of the Celts and Arabs trading cities while everyone increased their technology.
1952 - The Arabs complete The Manhattan Project. The Arabs and Ottomans, next-door-neighbors and old foes, both begin building nukes. I am not advanced enough to join them.

The second half of the 20th century is interesting as we conquer the Celts (including Babylonian lands), and the dynamic shifts to the Ottomans going for a space race victory and the Arabs a histographic victory:

Spoiler Late 20th Century :
1958 - Hispalis defects to the Celts (again).
1959 - I declare war on the Celts. I'd already been building up, so this is just a couple turns earlier than I'd planned. Currently I am on the brink of researching Motorized Transportation, but I have a large number of Artillery and Infantry already. Hispalis is immediately retaken.
1962 - I take Mohacs, the city that our Legions had spectacularly failed to take 900 years ago. This gives me Dyes, a very helpful additional luxury.
1964 - I take Palmyra, which had defected a millenia ago.
1966 - Augustodurum falls. We clearly have the upper hand in this war. Meanwhile, the Celts have lost their Aztec lands to Arabia, China, and Korea.
1967 - We figure out that the Celts are due to complete The Internet in Entremont in 10 turns. If they don't, the Ottomans or Arabs will. We decide to avoid Entremont in the hopes that they complete The Internet first.
1968 - We take Eboracum and Lutetia, but Mohacs defects.
1969 - Mohacs is recaptured.
1970 - Camulodunum is captured. This gives us Hoover Dam, a manufacturing boost, and less pollution and maintenance.
1975 - We take Lugdunum, but Camulodunum defects. Entremont completes The Internet a few turns ahead of time. I think this is because they were Communist, and when we took their cities, their corruption in Entremont decreased.
1976 - Camulodunum recaptured. The Ottomans begin conquering China.
1977 - We get a spy in Sogut, the Ottoman capital, and learn that they are actively building their spaceship, which the Celts and Arabs are not (we are not advanced enough to do so). This sets alarm bells ringing. At this rate, they will finish and win the game well before 2050. They also have Modern Armor and Mechanized Infantry, while we have Tanks and Infantry - not to mention their superior air force and navy. This will be a challenge.
1978 - We take Richborough.
1979 - The Arabs join in the conquest of China.
1980 - The Arabs complete the Cure for Cancer in a former Mongol city. They are pretty advanced, too.
1981 - The Ottomans complete Longevity. We take Entremont and Agedincum. With this, we gain control of The Internet and Research Labs appear everywhere, despite our not knowing anything about Computers. Our research speeds up even as we decrease funding.
1984 - We take Gergovia, the last Celtic city in their former homeland. With this, we are the dominant power in the west. However, the Arabs and Ottomans are both formidable and legitimate rivals in the east - the former due to size, the latter due to technology.
1988 - We take Nineveh and Babylon from the Celts, beginning our conquest of the Babylonian heartlands. China is being divided between the Ottomans and Arabs.
1990 - The first piece in our anti-Ottoman puzzle is achieved, as we take Hovd, a former Mongol town, from the Celts. We plan to build an airport there to ferry more troops into the region, and from there to attack Almarikh, a city north of Hovd that is the only Ottoman source of Aluminum. Without Aluminum, they can't complete their spaceship. Amongst the risks are that we may not be able to defend Almarikh, so we may have to raze it (and possibly retake it later), or give it to a neutral third party such as the Aztecs or Celts (who will be down to a couple towns by then). There's also the chance that the Ottomans will nuke us, as they have several nukes and we don't. That would be bad.
1991 - We finish our conquest of Babylonian lands from the Celts.
1993 - We take Cataractonium, another Celtic city near Hovd.
1996 - We take Tosontsengel, a Celtic city in Korean lands that has been bombed to oblivion but contains Furs, and make peace.
1998 - Tatung falls to the Ottomans, and China becomes the second civ to fall.

2000 - 2010 would be the most interesting decade, as I triggered a nuclear war but managed to avoid any of my cities being nuked. Instead, the Ottomans and Arabs nuked each other, the Ottoman Modern Armor couldn't do much, and both of them lost all resources. This prevented the Ottomans from building more spaceship parts. Eventually I switched sides in the war and started bringing down the Arabs, but I won a spaceship victory before I conquered them. It would have been close trying to conquer them and win histographic by 2050, so the spaceship route was the safe one.

Spoiler Nuclear War and Spaceships :
2000 - We declare war on the Ottomans. A healthy dozen or so Tanks, along with a couple Mech Inf, are near Hovd and ready to strike Almarikh. Diplomatically, we have secured Mutual Protection Pacts with Arabia and Greece, and Arabia has one with Korea, so everyone who matters should be at war with the Ottomans starting in 2001. Arabia lacks Rubber or Oil, so we've been supplying them with Rubber for a few turns so they have some defence against the Ottomans. We don't want them to be too strong lest they conquer the Ottomans, as they lead in score and have just begun their own Spaceship (Ottomans are at 6/10). We may need to conquer them due to their score. However, they need some defence lest the Ottomans overrun them, and we want them to absorb the majority of the Ottoman force.

We take Almarikh with moderate losses against their Mechanized Infantry and secure the area. The Ottomans do not nuke us in turn, but do retake Almarikh. This triggers war with Arabia, and the Ottomans take Basra and Chengdu right away.

2001 - Arabia feels threatened and decides to nuke the Ottomans. Four Ottoman cities are hit by Arabic ICBMs.

In retaliation, the Ottomans fire three ICBMs and a tactical nuke at the Arabs. The tactical nuke targets a small Arctic tundra town, but importantly it takes away the Arabic aluminum, which will prevent them from building their spaceship. The Ottomans also take Tatung and Merw from the Arabs. However, I retake Almarikh, and am happy that the AI's expended nearly all their nukes on each other, with my cities nuke-free. The Ottomans due still have one tactical nuke, however, which could be on any of their nuclear subs. I hope it doesn't show up in Rome.

2003 - I finish The Apollo Program.

2004 - The Ottomans take Aden, a city which they nuked earlier.

2005 - With few Ottoman troops in the area, I advance and take Sinop. My Tanks can handle what Modern Armors do show up.

2007 - I take Nanking and Tatung. It's clear now that I won't have to gift Almarikh.

2008 - The Arabs retake Merw; that front has stabilized. In no small part because both of them have no resources and have a third of their cities nuked.

2010 - My Artillery have arrived, and I take Ulaangom. I've established a nice territory in the northeast.

2010 - 2015: Aden changes hands several times. Elsewhere, neither side's Guerillas can defeat the other's defending Mech Inf.

2016 - The Arabs retake Basra, and Aydin two years later.

2020 - I switch sides in the war, making peace with the Ottomans and declaring war on the Arabs. The Ottomans can't make any progress towards the Space Race and the Arabs are probably going to win in score. I take their Mongol-lands city of Shantung this turn, and soon begin advancing in both Mongol and Aztec lands.

2023 - I do some calculations and figure that if I can four-turn most techs, I should be able to complete a spaceship just in time to win the game. However, that's not a guarantee, and I might need to conquer Arabia. So, as a means to that end, I nuke Damascus and Mecca. The latter is ironic, as that's where the Manhattan Project was built. This also cuts off Arabia from all resources.

2025 - I finish taking all Mongol lands. Unfortunately, Korea declares war on Greece because Greece attacked the Aztecs. Korea and Aztecs have an MPP (why Korea agreed, I've no idea). I have an MPP with both Korea and a right of passage with my next-door-neighbor Greece, so I will have to choose sides. Both are Gracious towards me. The good news is, I supply both sides with Oil, so whoever I side against won't have any oil. The bad news is, I'm getting tons of money from both sides for the oil, and I'll lose close to half of that either way. After that, I won't be able to run a profit at 100% science anymore, which could hurt spaceship efforts.

2026 - I side with Greece and DOW Korea. Greece pays more for oil and luxuries, is more advanced, has more upgraded troops, is right next door, and would be harder to conquer.

2027 - I take Cheju and Tlatelolco from Korea, beginning that conquest.

2028 - Ulsan falls, and Ashur to Greece.

2030 - Aydin falls from Arabia to me. This is through rough jungle terrain, and workers are busy at work making roads so I can continue my efforts against the Arabs. It also was nuked, so the old roads no longer exist. In good news, it gives my people nuked spices, which makes them happy.

2031 - Tenochitlan falls to Greece and the Aztecs are defeated.

2032 - Basra and Seoul fall to me, and Aden to my furious ally the Ottomans. Korea is clearly defeated, despite still having Rubber.

2034 - I take a few more cities from Korea, make peace, and sign a right of passage. I also get Amphibious War for a couple hundred gold in the peace deal.

2037 - I take the former metropolis of Medina, dealing a large blow to Arabia. This is the first city I've taken with the help of Radar Artillery, which are pretty devastating. About half my artillery are upgraded now, but the rest will be soon.

2039 - I take Anjar, a city the Ottomans nuked, from the Arabs. This is the first city I've taken with the help of Modern Armor.

2040 - I take Najran, and finish my spaceship with the help of a Great Leader rushing the exterior casing. My troops are within striking distance of Mecca, site of the Sistine Chapel, when the game ends. Final score: Arabia 1911, Rome 1755, Celts 1512, Ottomans 1397, Greece 1058, Korea 1052.

Game status: Domination Victory for Rome
Game date: 400 AD
Jason score: very close

a close call. are you going to share a spoiler?

Very busy right now. I'll try to outline the game right now from memory.

I built The Great Lighthouse brick by brick starting in the Ancient Age. I let the Celts in peace, hemmed in by my faster expansion as they were.

The first attack was against Greece using a lot of Galleys and a mix of elite Archers from the barbarian mountain training camp, Legionaries and Horsemen. The Great Lighthouse was finished some way into the Golden Age. I largely missed the opportunity to create cheap units through upgrade because I didn't want to set nine Workers aside. Probably a mistake.

Greece was very small and weak. The real target was Babylon below it, since they were set to build The Pyramids. So the eastern army went south through Babylon capturing The Pyramids and then north again along the isthmus with several weak tribes in mainly roadless Jungle. Greece was conquered through fake peace deals and by reserve troops on their way to the front. I failed to make good use of the rather large eastern Galley fleet. I was playing very short sessions over the holidays and wasn't being very creative. The peninsula raging north hindered me although I eventually did place a city across it.

As soon as I could I started building up a western fleet and used the safe passage which ended close to Russia. I shipped a Settler over and founded a bridgehead city near China, which was my first victim on this side. I then sent armies south and north from there using available roads and new ones which connected them. I didn't use Galleys along the coast.

One thing that held me up was the Mongols building The Great Wall in distant Karakorum. I fought my way through from their east (my western army), but the city was eventually captured by my eastern army coming from the west. At this time I was using Knights built as Horsemen and upgraded. I created Leonardo's Workshop on an island in the north where a Great Leader happened to emerge. The AI was researching fairly well and discovered Invention, Theology and even Gunpowder.

I took out the Celts a bit early because of having too little transport capacity in the west. The Galley chain got into disorder and there were too few ships. In the end I was as usual producing troops which never reached the frontier.
