Gotm17-Carthage Pregame Discussion

About temple/cathedral vs courthouse/policestation - The point of temple/cathedral is happiness, while ch/ps directly affects corruption (gold waste).

Obviously WLTL day celebrations are better than ch/ps, since it decreases gold AND shield waste. However it is more difficult to maintain, hence the need for temples/cathedrals to make happy faces.

Corruption will certainly be a major problem on archepelago. Those who get a great leader for a (foreign) palace will gain a great advantage.

I looked at the QSC spreadsheet - a good start. The keypad shorthand is a great idea, but more is definitely needed. How else are we going to get civ3 onto a hand-held?
:p

I have to laugh at the idea of scouting with a worker for 1-2 moves as being a huge waste. If that makes the difference between the top 2 scores then its time for Civ4.

WLTLD is the one that doesn't help gold corruption, courthouse and police station help both.

Scouting with your worker may not affect your score much, but it is the first of many small choices that add up to have a big effect. If you randomly decide all of them your score WILL suffer.

Well the new PTW patch is out. Can we play this with PTW v1.21f now?

edit: Hm just read the changes in the patch.

* The AI can no longer be set to player '0' (barbarian) when loading a game.

This sounds like it conflicts with gotm 17, no?

About Great Lighthouse: I think having the Great Lighthouse is essential in order to avoid an AI grabbing it. If an AI gets it chances are they connect with each other in no time and start trading. This can get annoying even at regent level.

Can't answer that for you yet. Initially the answer will be, NO. We will have to evaluate the patch first and Firaxis had several opportunities to provide us with advance notice of any changes but they chose not to. Hopefully the choices made by Firaxis in this example will not inconvenience our PTW players too much.

it's already 1st March in Russia - 2:32 am atm. Where is my sav file? :mwaha:

Cracker, the GOTM 17 intro stresses submititng regular screen shots and mini maps. Are there instructions somewhere on how to do this?

I'm surprised than no one said we should move the settler south in the jungle. You would still be on a river, get one bonus grassland, and keep the space for the second town on the grass near the sea.
That sure is an interesting idea, nice position and clearing a jungle tile at no cost.

Got it! Thanks zagnut

I haven't decided if I will move my settler or not. If I decide to do an OCC then I will move it to the coast. To me it kind of looks like the tiles W, SW and SW, SW are floodplains but I am not certain.

Hmm you're right. I just blew the image up and I'm almost positive they are floodplains. Knowing that you'd lose out on 2 floodplain tiles by moving east. You could still move south to clear the jungle.

If you move south you will lose the freshwater bonus. There is also a possibility that under the jungle is a bonus grassland (I don't think it would be with all the other bonus grasslands though).

I think the river goes between the hill and mountain but it's hard to tell with the unit selection oval. There's a possibility it's a bonus grassland. The fact that there's already a lot of bonus grassland tiles doesn't make bonus grassland under the jungle any less probable. But if you stay on the hill then you lose the shields you get from mining it. I'd rather lose the bonus grassland shield than the hill shields. But then again it sets you 50 years behind the AI. There also appears to be some plains 2 south of the start position. If you clear that jungle right away it will be easier to get irrigation there. Assuming there's no fresh water on the other side of the jungle/forest. I still haven't made my mind up what I'll do yet.

edit: Actually it appears you can get the irrigation over there via the floodplains. I think I'll stay on the hill and I won't even waste the worker move scouting the mountain.

We are going to proceed with the game release for the MAC and Civ3v1.29 versions of Gotm17-Carthage.

Just a reminder to all players that there will be no public discussion of the game content until the first spoiler discussion thread opens on March 5th. The criteria for accessing that spoiler thread will require you to clearly have full map knowledge of you starting archipelago group and discussion in the first spoiler will be limited to those issues.

Also you may not access and participate in this pregame discussion thread in any way after you have downloaded and opened the starting save game files.

The PTW version of the starting game will hopefully be available within 24 hours for those players who will wish to play the game in PTW. We apologize for any delay in play that may result from this delay in releasing the PTW version of the game. We have had the PTW game version in testing for over two weeks and specifically requested advance notice from Firaxis if a PTW patch would be released. The timing of the release of the new PTW patch requires that we at least perform some minimal testing to make sure that the patch does not disrupt game play.

We will do everything in our power to minimize the impact of this delay for the PTW players.

{please do not put words in my mouth as they create confusion I can live without right now ;) - cracker }

Edit: Sorry, was just asking ;)

Nevermind, I'll start it in v1.29 just to make the one hour on-line wait for this message worth it.

Edit: I can now definitely confirm there is a file called gotm17_start_v1_29.sav on my HD ( no false alarm this time) ;)

Ok, lemme see. It's only the us version of 1.21 that's releases yet. Does that mean that you're actually contemplating changing it from PTW1.14f to PTW1.21f meaning US players only? Or more like: to see if GOTM17 PTW can be played by both 1.14f and 1.21f users, but that you want to check if it will break the gameplay or the gameplay experience for the 1.21f'ers?

We are proceeding with the release of the PTW version of the Gotm17-Carthage game.

This game is released in a version that is compatible with the v1.14f version of the software as well as the v1.21f version that was released to day with no advance notice.

We have tested all the critical graphics functions and added units in both versions and have found no obvious discrepencies.

A word of extreme caution is warranted for all PTW players but in particular for players who choose to play the V1.21f version of PTW: If exploits are flaws are discovered in these software versions which substantially alter the game play, these exploits will be disallowed until we can reaonably make these expolits available to all players or disable them so they can be used by no one to gain an unfair advantage.

We will continue testing of the game in parallel with you play efforts and if any technical issues are revealed you will be notified.

Remember that if you have not properly installed the game pack for this GOTM, you will have a sad experience.

Good luck, have fun, and be patient.

Also a reminder about the In-game puzzler for the Gotm17-Carthage game.

There are a number of specially named units and features that you may encounter in this game. The puzzler is a simple names list along with the locations where these named units/features are encountered.

There are 22 of these special names. When you reach the end of you game or when you believe you have found all 22 names you may submit your list by email to gotm@civfanatics.net

If you finish your game and still have not located all 22 names, you may submit your list of the names you have found to see how you measure up to the other intrepid Carthaginian World Explorers.

Our apologies in advance to our MAC playing friends, because your version of the game still will not support individual unit naming that would allow the puzzler to be implemented. The MAC game still has the same units and features, but they just don't have the special names.
