Gotm20-Spain Results and Congratulations

I've done a little investigation comparing QSC to Full results. The following is a little spreadsheet showing how players changed position between QSC and finishing their game.

I was expecting to be the most disunimproved, but Smirk beat me to that rather dubious honour!

Great table. I was going to do something like this myself just for my records, so thanks for saving me the effort. I think you meant to highlight moonsinger's game as her (filtered) position improved a fair bit from the qsc, which was a reflection of the problem of assessing games one move before the second 40 turn research came in.

I see Tneural scored almost identical stats to me. Well done???? I wonder if our games were similar too.

Congratulation to all, especially the top medal winners and first time Deity winners.:goodjob: Wow! 109 victories! Even though I didn't win the Powerball and I have bought virtual balloons and drinks for all of you.:)

[party][party]

Congrats to everyone who completed the game.

I didn't get time to (real life interrupted, and my game is still in the Middle Ages). But then, since I came last in the QSC this time maybe it's just as well!

:)

WHB SHALL RETURN! (not for GOTM21, but when life quietens down again I'm sure I'll be back to claim a few more last places)

Maybe my name will show up on the rankings now (can't find 'em, and I know I submitted for a previous GOTM, I just can't remember which  )[/B]

I'd also be interested to know when the global ranking are due to be updated. They page at the moment seems to be pretty out of date...

Cheers

Is there a special award for a totally confused double negative?

I was trying to work out how I got into your table at all, then realised that my (unfinished) submission must have been included in the results table. Not only that, but I won an Ambulance!

I want to congratulate everyone who even finished that game, which is more than I managed to do. I am blown away by the results achieved by the top players, and all the more determined to try to emulate some of their feats.

BTW. The results table doesn't show me playing the Mac version, which I do and did.

Now, where's the switch for the flashing lights and loud sirens on this ambulance?

Just some more analysis that some might find interesting.

It appears that lots of people either have a lot of free time, or leave their games running (severe paranoia about turns per reload perhaps...LOL)

Looking at the PTW numbers. If we assume that people are awake for 14 hrs per day, each player would have had 30*14=420 hours to potentially play at GOTM 20. (Not including time during which some of us have to work/study...

The 5 players with the longest amnts of play time/waking time would be as follows:

Mudfoot - 71%!
Jove - 51%
Moonsinger - 38%
DaviddesJ - 37.7% (and still ran out of time in the month!)
Simonsezz - 36%

The players who spent the least amount of time would be as follows:

Mongo - 0.82% (Loss)
Pilferman - 1.49% (Loss)
Delgath - 1.61% (Loss)
Sombat - 1.85% (Loss)
d8575 - 1.86% (Loss)

The winners who played the least amount of waking hours would be as follows:

ChrTr - 1.88% (Spaceship Win in 1740AD in only 7hrs 54mins of play! Big up to you ChrTr)
Assura - 2.1% (Diplo Victory in 1400AD in only 8hrs 48! - and still managed to get into the top 40 (34th), must have been some great play there)
pman67 - 3.06% (Diplo Victory in 1595AD in only 12hrs 52mins)
Norlamand - 3.26% (Spaceship Victory in 1820AD in only 13hrs 42)
Tinus - 3.45% (Diplo Vicotry in 1610AD in only 14hrs 3mins)

For some reason, my PTW game doesn't register a lenght of time played... oh well.

Cheers

Orginally posted by cracker: "In this month's results the upper 50% performance cutoff is at position number 93 "

I guess that makes Conquest players above #93 the Conquest graduating class of GOTM20? Woohoo! :grad: Hi classmates, proud to be with you! Albeit at position #92...what's the opposite of valedictorian? See you in Open class!

Regarding self-policing, I am sure Conquest was appropriate for me. Never played Deity, bottom 10% of GOTM19.

My new goal: build a spacehsip by 1275. Amazing feat, Kemal.

Cheers all!

Speaking for myself, it was nice that Cracker went out of his way to point out some of us other players. :) With the skill level of players participating in this event, I doubt I will ever crack a top 10 position, but I know I have improved a tremendous amount through participation since I first shadowed gotm17.

Frankly, I am glad there are many players better than me. Gives me plenty of room to grow and people to learn from.

Wow. First ever diety win now under the belt... Feel a lot happier about that. Between a friendly map and an extra settler I didn't get wiped out in the early medieval times... Time for a party!

No more conquest for me :)

Congratulations to everyone - the pre 1500AD spaceship and conquest/domination victories on that map particularly impress. Least I got a new goal to aim for :)

About Dianthus's table... I'm almost in the pink lines ! I did quite well in the QSC (20/93) even though I was 1 turn away from the Middle Ages. But it was an unstable position : I had almost entirely focused my game on expansion (I submitted my QSC, but I did not play in order to get the best of the QSC phase, I just played to get the best of the full game). So, a few turns after that, the French sneak attacked me : they first captured an undefended town (no barb found = I didn't send any escort in the end), then 4 more cities. So it slowed down my game a lot. I eventually conquered almost all the continent, but I had lost a lot of time and power before starting the Reconquista.

So, what I'll learn is : I can do quite well in QSC, but I'll surely do it in another way in my next games. I MUST LEARN TO BUILD SOME MILITARY EVEN IF THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE NEED !! :aargh: That's my eternal mistake in any type of game. I want to expand and build up my economy first before thinking of my military, but of course that can never win in a tough level game... There is a balanced way of playing I need to find out. The other thing I'll learn is to go warmongering a lot. Spaceship victories don't seem to make the top scores... :( (me : played GOTM 19 & 20, 2 spaceship victories, the easy and boring ones) But for GOTM21, it requires a spaceship victory to participate to the Tournament. I'll see what I'll do.

Since my overall turn per reload is usually between 20 to 81 turns, no severe paranoia for me there. However, I do have a goal not to play less than 10 turns per session. Therefore, I left my Civ running whenever I need to do something else that doesn't require my computer. I think my real time was around 50 hours or less.

Anyway, my system does seem to go into the hibernation mode with PTW running on the background when I'm not around (the screen goes blank and the hard drive power down and it takes about 30 seconds after I touch the mouse to power up my system back to full power with PTW still running on the background). I know that Civ3 can't go into hibernation mode so it must be a special feature of the OS that control hibernation.

Sometimes it pays not to worry about micro-managing or warfare :D

I was trying to win, took my time, and still lost that many places :(. On the upside, that was my 1st win since I started GOTM (as the Carthaginians in GOTM 17), and with it being Deity (albeit Conquest Deity) I'm quite pleased really. It shows that I've improved the 1st 80 moves, I just need to work on the rest of them now!

ChrTh, you do realise there are multiple pages in the Global Rankings, don't you? Just press the "next >>" link at the top right of the table. If you're anything like me you'll have to press it quite a few time!

EDIT : I've just looked and I can't find you. It's not anything to do with submitting a win because I'm in there (#261) and my position is still based on my ranking before this month's 1st win.

I am also in the GOTM20 graduating class. Last month, i finished 121 out of 245, so i technically shouldnt have played conquest as i was top 49%, but i would have gotten my plow cleaned in open :). But, as you might be able to tell, i am improving in great leaps and bounds. from 121 on emporer to 66 on deity minus, and i just won my first regular deity game by conquest. I hope to get into the top 40 this month, but well see what happens. It was very fun and challenging ( escpecially when shaka decided to sneak attack me). BTW, where can i find what all of those little awards mean.

I think you sell yourself short. Given the optimal starting location and your previous GOTM performance, you probably would have done better than you give yourself credit.

DaveMcW, Alexman, Moonsinger, Bremp, and SirPleb - Are always top skill performers in the games but you see them moving around in scoring positions and trying new things that focus on specific strategy choices that they feel would be fun or appropriate for each game.

Ahem... There is no way Alexman deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the legendary players in that group. Not yet anyway! :)

Most of these guys are playing around with fancy, unusual, or super-fast ways to win, often ignoring their Jason score. The "new things" I try are not really meant to be done for fun (although they are fun, of course), I'm just still trying to get my first gold medal! :wallbash:

Anyway, congratulations to everyone who played this game, especially the players who won their first Deity game. I am amazed at how fast everyone is improving. The level of play is noticeably higher, even compared to a few games ago. It's very satisfying to see this progress, and I think this has to lots do with all the hard work the GOTM staff put into the event.

Same with me, finally a win after 4 attempts. Here is my graph of success so far:

Damn, it won't paste in from Excel

Oh well, I now placed in the top half, even though I played the Open Class:king:

Now I really want to see how my GOTM21 victory will score. I look forward so much to the rankings when I submit a victory and not a loss.

If I place 164 out of 185 entries that puts my solidly in the conquest class for Gotm 21. Well it's a little late for that now. Maybe I should follow Crackers advice and wait for the results of the last game before starting a new game.

@ Dianthus
Thanks for the spreadsheet. I always knew that my sluggish starts have been killing me, but you have illustrated some interesting trends. It seems like I finish 30-40 positions lower every month in the QSC than in the results. I would say that this is not neccessarily a precise indicator as some players sometimes do not strive for max QSC points at the expense of their overall game. Thanks again.
