Gotm24-Korea Pre-game Discussion

Yes, but if you go to the N first it will take as many turns total, because you don't go back to the N wool at the end

N-I4-S-SW-I4-R3-SW-I4-R3-move back to e.g. woods S of city
- total of 23 turns

or

SW-I4-R3-SW-I4-R3-back to city-N-I4-move to free tile : 23 turns

I was going to work the N wool first because it's next to the river, so an extra gold. But not invest the 3 turns building a road since it doesn't help with movement and there's a wool SW (2 SW now) that will connect as a lux anyway.

The starting save game files are now available to download and play. Please make sure you follow the setup instructions before you attempt to load the save file of you will have an unpleasant experience and that is not the objective.

Several last minute reminders of note are included in README files that are include with every copy of the starting save files.

Here is the actual text of the of those readme files:

For everybody who DOES NOT HAVE PTW/Play the World:

Just a few last minute notes to make sure you can enjoy your game:

First, make a mental note that the starting position has been altered slightly from the initial game announcement in order to equalize an exploit/bug/difference between the PTW software versions and previous versions of the game. You may find more information about the start position in the pregame discussion thread, BUT REMEMBER you may not participate in the pregame discussion in any way after you have opened the starting save file to see anything about the game.

Second, you will notice that the names of some technologies have been changed. Nothing about the technology tree has been altered other than the names. Even the positions of the techs remain unchanged from standard. The name changes are just to give the game more of Korean/Asian flavor during the discussion and reporting phases. Also, we have activated a number of specialize unit animations and made them available for you to play in the game. The value and strength of these units is not changed from what the standard units would be but again these units are activiated to let you play a game that has much more of an Korean/Asian flavor to it instead of being Native American and Eurocentric.

Have fun!!! And be patient if we do have any technicall difficulties as I will resolve them quickly if any panic that might ensue can be avoided in favor of contacting me by PM or email to get the quickest possible result.
Note also that the game setup for Gotm24 is not compatible with previous GOTMs due to some of the hardcoded software limitations that were designed into the game. You will have to manually swap your pediaicons.txt files back and forth to swicth from game to game, but that is the way that the software was designed when it was released.

For any players who will play in PTW you must make a quick update to your Gotm24 Pediaicons.txt file according to your version of the README file:

Included with your starting save game file are a few notes plus a file that you must update before attempting to play this game or YOU WILL PROBABLY DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH.

FIRST, locate the PediaIcons.txt file that is included in the zip folder and then locate the folder that will support Gotm24 play in your Civ3PTW/Scenarios folder. If you followed standard installation procedures, this folder should be located at the following (or a similar) disk address:

C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\CIV3PTW\Scenarios\gotm24\text\

In this folder you will find a PediaIcons.txt file that cam with you download setup files and you must replace the first download version with this updated version.

There are several typos in the original file that will cause some versions of PTW to crash viciously.

SECOND, make a mental note that the starting position has been altered slightly from the initial game announcement in order to equalize an exploit/bug/difference between the PTW software versions and previous versions of the game. You may find more information about the start position in the pregame discussion thread, BUT REMEMBER you may not participate in the pregame discussion in any way after you have opened the starting save file to see anything about the game.

THIRD, for the Conquest Class version of the game, your two starting spearmen type units are "Otomo Spearman" instead of "Ashigaru Footmen" as announced in the game announcement. These units are still the same value and strength, it is just that we used one of your PTW extra units rather than having you download the free public domain substitute units.

FOURTH, you will notice that the names of some technologies have been changed. Nothing about the technology tree has been altered other than the names. Even the positions of the techs remain unchanged from standard. The name changes are just to give the game more of Korean/Asian flavor during the discussion and reporting phases. Good luck to everyone in that game and hope you have fun!

Let the quotes of great Asain Philosphical wisdom begin!!!

"C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\CIV3PTW\Scenarios\gotm24\text\"

I think it should be

C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\CIV3PTW\Scenarios\gotm21\text\

Absolutely not.

If you cannot locate the Gotm24 scenario folder. STOP. Backup and read the directions and see if you could have missed the key step of installing the Gotm24 game pack. - cracker

I get an error message that "the setup file is corrupted and you should obtain another copy" when I run the GOTM24 update (PTW) ...

This is my first attempt at a GOTM. I installed the GOTM21 full install beforehand. What am I doing wrong? Sorry if I'm just being an idiot and missing something. Totally new to this.

Some PTW players may be missing a critical text folder in the their GOTM24 scenario folder under CIV3PTW.

I have repacked the setup files to make sure the text folder is in there properly but if you downloaded the setup before today, you will need to fix this text folder to make sure your civilopedia and diplomacy works even if teh game doesn't crash outright.

Here is a zip containing separate copies of the three text files that must be included in the

.../CIV3PTW/scenarios/gotm24/text/ folder

for you game to work properly. The PediaIcons version in this zip already has the typo fixes in place.

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/saves/gotm24_ptw_text_folder.zip (268 kb)

If you download the add-on Game pack for PTW after this date and time, the self installing files should include all the correct versions and text files along with the unit animation files.

Not sure why this was working for some PTW installs and not others but hopefully the repack will fix the problem.

When I was looking for the corrupted pedia file on the Civ3PTW/Scenario folder, I haven't found any "Text" folder inside my Gotm24 folder.

Then I had a better look and there was a pedia file on the Text folder on Gotm21 folder.

I updated the file (making a backup of the original) and it worked on mine.

I was able to run the game.

I would like to point out that with the setup change the northwest coastal square is now also on a river, making the choices for that position a little more viable (although most people seem to focus on hill or north movement start)

Keiselhorn,

Don't know if you can reverse what you did, but if you can reverse the process do it.

You really have not fixed the major problem and you game will still blow up if you do it that way. You are missing diplomacy and civilopedia files as well.

Try to position the /CIV3PTW/scenarios/gotm24/text/ folder properly and make sure you get the three folders in there.

The auto instalelr has been fixed to make sure these files are installed but you can also get the text files separately from the zip link above.

I don't want your game play to be disrupted here in a few turns when the whole thing crashes because you are missing these key files.

Since Qitai has pointed the possibility in setting up the settler factory, I tried to layout all the figures in the excel. And...

Yes, simulation runs and indeed it is possible to get the 4-turn settler fac up by 2950BC, with the first settler coming out by 2800BC. This includes the changing of wool to a cattle according to the new map by cracker and without touching the wheat. :D And the shields generated thru this period are enough to build at least 3 warriors still. Now it is time to really play it and enjoy the surprises cracker has put into this game. :)

No problem. I still have the backup I made. I'll do it.

I did the proper Gotm24 setup download and installed them 3 days ago. But I haven't found any "text" folder inside the Gotm24 folder in /Scenarios.

Checking the Civilopedia in the game, all Asian units appeared, as well as the renamed techs, but there was no description for any of those units.

I don't know if it's default, but I also noticed that with Metallurgy it comes both the H'wacha and the standard cannon. Is the standard PTW like that? Or the gotm?

EDIT: Done. I made the download indicated in your above post, with the Text folder and the 3 files, and it's working ok. Thanks cracker

I just installed PTW GOTM 21 + the GOTM 24 update. But I don't see any units in the scenario/GOTM24/Art folder, nor in the GOTM 21. I thought there were extra units (Kinboat's ones) or am I wrong and did my install actually fail ?

The units go in the art folder of Civ III.

BTW, I tried to install with the installer I downloaded a few days ago. If said it was corrupted. So I tried to download the new installer. If I chose "Save As" the resulting file still failed. I ended up "Open"ing it. That saved a new copy in my temp directory and ran just fine. I'm guessing that if you download after today, you don't need to replace the civilopedia file since the one included in the zip file is the same date and time as the one that got installed by my newly downloaded installer.

I'm excited for this one. Haven't ruled out trying my first ever OCC either. Seems doable with the Diplo Medal goal.

Good luck everyone.

I mentioned this in the game announcement because it is both a minor and a major tweak.

We have rearranged the sequence of units in the upgrade cycle so that You can capture cannons instead of having the explode in your face like they do in the out of the box game.

As shipped from the manufacturer, this is a BUG that has been pretty much ignored because it may not be understood. Essentially, in the out of the box game, the Koreans get the Hwach'a and the cannon is disabled for them. The upgrade chain becomes a laibility for the Koreans instead of an asset because they cannot capture Cannons as they are supposed to be able to logically and in all prior games.

The way we have it set up the cannons upgrade to the Hwacha's (or Seige Cannons) so now all the Koreans can capture cannons while none of the regular civs can capture or use Hwacha's.

I first reported this implementation discrepency in December of last year and it was easy to fix. I have not had time to chase down through all the various patch cycles to see if Firaxis has fixed it at the source yet.

Both the PTW and Civ3 versions of the GOTM games have the bug fix implemented (if our testing was robust enough.

The strengths, abilities, and resource pre-requisites are unchanged.

This bug has been fixed as of PTW 1.21f, if not earlier.
