Moderator Action: Note that I have updated the starting save game zip folders for all versions of the game to include these typo fixes and an updated readme.

If you download the starting save game after 12 noon Eastern Standard time on November 5th and follow the instructions in the readme.txt file then you should not need any additional repairs or tweaks. - cracker

Here is a tiny file containing a replacement "Gospodar.ini" file that corrects a typo where two equal signs where inserted in some graphics call lines instead of 1 equal sign.

I have already updated the starting save game zip folders to include this fix. So if you have a Gospodar.ini file in your zip folder with the starting save game file it should be identical to the one attached to this message.

Just replace the existing copy in you /art/units/Gospodar folder and this should fix that crash:

I have received clear definition of the Anda Swordsman crash problem in the PTW versions of the game only.

This problem only effects the PTW versions of the game and is a one letter typo related to the "same data in two places inconsistency theorem".

I have already updated the Save Game.zip packs to include the typo fix in the pediaicons.txt file so if you have dowloaded the starting save game after 11:30 AM EST on November 1st the problem should not occur for you.

You may fix the problem in one of three ways:

Re-Download - you can redowload the starting save game zip and it will include the updated pediaicons.txt file that you can replace in your Gotm25 scenario folder and this will fix the typo.

Manual - you can go to your /gotm25/text/ folder and locate the pediaicons.txt file and open it in a simple text editor like wordpad or notepad and the "find" the word spelled "Aword" and just change the "A" to an S.

Direct Pediaicons.txt download - I have attached a zipped copy of the corrected Pediaicons.tx file directly to this message. You can download it and just replace the version in your gotm25 scenario folder.

It took a few minutes to figure this one out and it is worth giving all players an explanation so that you have a clearer picture of what is actually happening.

When the original Civ3 game was released by Firaxis the swordsman unit had several inconsistencies in the unit file naming. One of these original files was named "SwordmanFortify .wav" NOTE that this file name has an almost unnoticed extra space at the end of the name before the .wav extension.

This original typo in th product received from Firaxis did not cause the Civ3 game to crash but when PTW was released there were undocumented changes to the software that did cause a crash which Firaxis caught and then implemented a kluge to fix the problem. Instead of fixing the actual source of the Problem, PTW just tucked in a different "swordsman.ini" file buried down inside the PTW units structure so that the swordsman in PTW would read the files differently than the swordsman in Civ3v1.29.

-----------------

With this Gotm25 game we basically just stepped on this hidden landmine that was not properly fixed in the first place.

-----------------------------------
Implementing a Real Solution to the Problem
To implement a permanent solution that fixes the original problem as received from the manufacturer and still lets the Kluge function the way it was hacked into place, you will need to

1) go to your /Civilization III/Art/Units/Swordsman folder

2) locate the file named "SwordmanFortify .wav"

3) make a copy of this file and leave the copy in the Swordsman folder.

4) rename the new copy of the wave file to be named:

"SwordmanFortify.wav"

pay close attention to make sure you deliberately misspell swordsman by leaving out the "s" and then make sure there is no space at the end of the filename.

Now you will have two copies of the same sound file but one will be misspelled and with the extra space as provided by Firaxis and the other will be misspelled but without the goofy crash causing extra space.

This deserves a little extra emphasis because when you get done with the fix, you should have TWO files that are named almost identical filenames except for the one with extra goofy space:

"SwordmanFortify .wav"
"SwordmanFortify.wav"

The reason you need both is because PTW is wired in to use the file with goofy space while Civ3v1.29 and the basic swordsman unit is wired in to use the filename without the goofy space.

This should eliminate the Anda Swordsman crash and also fix the basic problem so that it will not impact you in any other games.

Will this also correct a missing deathhorsemen.flc file? I just hit this error.

Let us see if you implement the fixes and if the error still occurs. This is what I would have done first. ;)

There is a simple solution for those who have no problem with getting down and dirty - fix the problem yourselves. mind you, it took me an hour or so, moving, renaming files, fixing the 'Anda Awordsman' and the SwordmanFortify .wav bug. HOWEVER, there is a possibility that you could do something wrong and void your game, I'm not sure.

Not that it really matters... I'll tell you why in the industrial spoiler ;).

EDIT: Please, trust cracker, not me.

This was the first time that I checked with the GOTM forum when I encountered a GOTM error instead of trying to figure it out myself. I guess I did the right thing. It would have take at least two hours for me to figure out all these fixes.

thanks cracker.

I can't find the SwordmanFortify.wav file
I am looking in civIII/Art/Units/Swordman folder but don't have the file
I have a SwordmanFortify.flc file and a SwordmanFortify sound file!!!
Please help

As usual, it's best to state your CivIII version. If you have version 1.29, non-PTW, then the file should be there, but with a space on the end of the name, before the suffix. So it's called SwordsmanFortify[space].wav. At least that's the case in my copy. I think there's a Cracker-post somewhere that expains that this space character is one of the fun trip-wires that the GOTM team fell over this month.

No I have PTW version 1.14

Do you have Windows set to hide known extensions? The SwordmanFortify sound file is probably actually SwordmanFortify.wav.

Thx AlanH, I'll try again tonight

Could you please direct me to a fix for Missing file:

art\units\turghout cavalry\attack2=../mongolian horse archer 3/s3haulersettle.flc

Scubagator,

This error was corrected by one of the small xxxx.ini files that was provided to you when you downloaded the starting save game.

The Readme.txt file that was included with that game should have been read and the fix file should have be installed before you begane play and the error would not have inconvenienced you.
