GOTM 78 - first spoiler, the Ancient Age

UGH! After returning from my travel I've been rather sick with little energy for anything. Sorry for the belated start on this Spoiler - I plan to post the other 2 tomorrow.

Reading Requirements:

  1. Must be able to research a Middle Ages Technology.
  2. Must have contact with all remaining civs on your starting landmass.

Posting restrictions

  1. Please be discreet with any discussions regarding off-continent civs; contact dates and trades are fine but absolutely nothing revealing location or direction.
  2. No discussion of middle-ages (or later).
  3. AS ALWAYS, do not post Spoiler information for ANY other 'X'OTM contest.

Here comes another Warlord game, but this time you're not completely alone ... So how did your initial start go? The nearby area is somewhat desolate - did you found nearby or head off for more greener pastures? And if you headed off, where did you found? How about the other civ on your starting continent? How about the other continent - any action there yet, or are you waiting?

Great to be back, as it's been a while!

I'm playing 20K - but not the OC challenge. The moment I saw that the island was big I went looking for a good 2nd 20K city spot and found Iroquese. Their capital was a good 20K spot.

I went for Archer rush and I jumped the capital to Iroquese in 1990BC. A mighty force of 3 v.Archers and 1 Reg. Warriors was enough to wipe Iroquese off the map.

In hindsight, shouldn't have built a second city (built it on the Ivory spot 3 tiles North) but just churn out Archers in the capital. On Warlord I didn't need that many Archers. But the 2nd city stayed up quietly building vet. military throughout the whole game.

I also captured Iroquese worker and scout, built a settler before disbanding my capital, popped WC and CB from the huts and traded BW from the Iroquese before the war.
The settler built a city at 4RCP west of the new capital on the coast, so we had 3 cities total when we began our 20K for real.

20K city built Temple, Colossus, GLH, library and then had to switch GL to Oracle as someone built GL first.
Then we went for HG with an option of GW and Pyramids, and then lost everything in the Wonder cascade as some sod (Carthage) finally built Pyramids when we were 3 turns till HG (and over GW). So we had to build Colosseum instead.

We met everyone after getting MM, with Carthage becoming our main trading partner.
In the end of the Ancient Age we started a war with Celts, and got our first GL. But as it was after the wonder cascade and before any MA tech, we built an Army and then build Heroic Epic in the 20K capital.
So that was all the culture we built in the AA.

We went Republic somewhere in 600BC.
We crawled into Middle Ages at around 200AD.

4000BC settled Washington in place after scout went north and worker went southwest. Science is set to 100% and I am working the coast tile for faster science. Alphabet in 24 turns. I start a warrior. I decide not to build the granary because I may move the capital.

3950BC worker starts a road. Scout heads east and sees a goodyhut and more ivory.

3900BC warrior code from goodyhut. Scout turns north after hut.

3850BC road is finished. Start mine. Switch worked tile to roaded BG. This will cost 5 turns on Alphabet but pump out my units faster.

3800BC scout pops ceremonial burial from a goodyhut.

3700BC mine and first warrior finished. I move my worker to the wrong space. Scout sees purple boarder.

3650BC Iroquois are met they have nothing to trade for.

3500BC Washington’s boarder expands.

3400BC Washington is size 2.

3350BC first archer.

3200BC attack Iroquois worker, our first slave.

3150BC second archer start settler.

3050BC I’ve been building a road toward where I want to build New York City. This will be our new capital.

3000BC a warrior came out of Salamance so I will play a cat and mouse game with my warrior and scout to draw it close to my archers.

2900BC Washington is size 3.

2850BC first settler.

2750BC an archer kills that warrior. Make peace, Iroquois give Bronze Working and 10gp

2670BC see another warrior.

2630BC our slave is starting to irrigate to NYC. Founded Ney York.

2590BC learn alphabet.

2350BC Washington rushed a settler and a banded city. Palace jumped to NYC. Rebuilt Washington in place.

1990BC NYC expands.

1910BC both slave and worker are irrigating and building roads in NYC.

1550BC Washington builds a settler.

1500BC Philadelphia founded at a distance of 3 from NYC. Between turns Salamanca borders expand so I have to back my troops on their border.

1425BC learn writing study map making. Atlanta founded.

1400BC Salamanca sends out a settle/warrior.

1350BC attack warrior/settler, 2 more slaves.

1200BC Iroquois send out an archer.

1000BC stats

4 towns with population total of 9.
1 settler
1 worker
3 slaves
1 scout
4 warriors
9 archers

Predator, going for Domination

Settled in place. Research was pottery, alpha, writing, Map Making, CoL, Republic (got in 610BC) and research turned off (cash rushing settlers with gold).

Washington built 2 scouts, granary (finished in 3100BC), then settlers and few reg archers between settlers.

Built 2 towns at RCP 4, which built barracks and archers.

Salamanca was captured around 2000BC, and Niagara Falls in 1750 BC (after it's borders expanded for not autorizing town while capturing it) and Iroquese are no more. 7 archers were enough to kill them.

Washington is abandoned in 1350BC and palace jumps to Philadelphia.

QSC stats:

8 towns
14 pop
3 slaves and 3 native workers
2 galleys, few warriors and archers

Island is filled around 400BC. We start colonizing other continent. Few horses are built and Zulu are destroyed in 310BC.

MA entered in 290BC after few civs show up with Currency and Construction.

The question is how fast can I build settlers to hit domination limit

Open, going for either domination or conquest.

Settled in place and started on a granary. Research was alpha, I popped 25 gold and the wheel from the 2 huts.

Met the Iroquois people in 3600BC and traded Masonry for CB, later traded for Bronze Working and Warrior Code with them.

I made a little RCP4 (the cities north-east (founded in 2710BC) and north (2350BC) built barracks and after that chariots), the city south (1870BC) did a pre-build for a harbor. I placed the fourth city (1325BC) at RCP6 which started a pre-build for the forbidden palace.

The only action before discovering MM (besides killing some barbs) was me killing an Iroquois settler wandering around in 1525BC. I brought water to my core with these 2 slaves and my 2 native workers.

I went of course straight for Map Making in the technology department, which I discovered in 1350BC. I did 2 pre-builds for galleys which I both loaded up with a scout.

I met the Greece in 1300BC and a few trading rounds later I walked away with contacts with Zululand, Scandinavia, Mongols and ofcourse the Greece (still down 3 contacts), about 150 gold, Iron Working, Horseback Riding and the map of the known world to that point.

I used the gold to upgrade 6 chariots. 4 of them went of to war against the Iroquois and I put 2 on the Alpha island to fund my research (by rasing barb villages) and discovering the rest of the world. I met the Celts in 1075BC and Carthage in 925BC, India was nowhere to be found.

1000BC stats:
7 cities
16 population
2 native workers and 2 slaves
7 horsemen, 2 galleys, 1 archer
116 gold

Wars in the ancient age:
* Iroquois were destroyed in 590BC, the war took so long because I waited for the cities to expand their borders.
* started war against the Zulu in 550BC, made peace in 450BC after taking Zimbabwe and destroying one city as all their cities had only 1 population (+ Impi’s are annoying!) and I wanted to focus on a good core for a palace jump later on.
* started war against the Mongols in 390BC (only to get some extra slaves), made peace in 230BC without taking any cities.
* Also started war against Scandinavia in 390BC, getting a Great Leader in 370BC (used to build the Pyramids in Zimbabwe). Made peace in 210BC leaving them with 1 city.

Research:
After I discovered MM I went for CoL, Republic (490BC, 5 turn anarchy), Currency (researched only half of it, because it was discovered by Carthage before I finished it), Construction. (traded for the rest)

Reached the middle ages in 210BC, deciding I wanted to conquer the entire world (although at this point I don't know what that exactly means!!)
