Which is it?

Personally, I'd go with The Wolf Among Us, South Park or Divinity: Original Sin, but there are probably better games from 2014 that I haven't played.

What's your pick?

CivBE, once they patch it and change the gal who is reading the quotes.

Wont it be 2015 by then?

Thats my vice with GotY's. I either buy games way after release, or it only has become good way later. I mean i really love civ v, got 100's of hours on it, but its first year/version was crap.

Played Trine 2 this year, absolutly loved it, but its 2013

This thread seems a bit early, 2014 isn't even over yet, and we're going to need a couple years before we've played more than a couple of this years releases.

The only I've played that came out this year is Banished.

Well it can't be Elite, because it's not even close to release.

Was 5 nights at Freddie's 2014 or older?

(anyway, for an indy game and the effort of mostly one person, despite many rough edges it became massively popular).

Well, it is only recently launched, but for me, it may be World of Warcraft - Warlords of Draenor. A really impressive expansion! Civ:BE is #2 for me.

Up until now I would say Dragon Age: Inquisition, but I'm not that far yet and might revise my opinio if the story and particularly the ending manage to piss me off like Mass Effect 3.
Beyond Earth might become a contender if we get a good balance patch this year.

I agree with those who have said it's too early. Not only are there still games to come out later this year, but who's had time to play large numbers of 2014 games? The games I've played the most this year came out in 2009 and 2013, and I'm not sure I've played any games that came out this year (it depends somewhat the definition of a launch across platforms). So I can't nominate any games that came out this year.

scheva007 is also definitely right about quality varying over time. Civ4 wasn't that good in 2005, but by 2008 it had become a really good game. So, by 2008, you could argue it was the best game that came out in 2005, but it wasn't the best game that came out in 2005, in 2005. It also doesn't really work well with games that are continuously improved over time, like Minecraft or Prison Architect.

5 Nights at Freddy's was this year, I think, unless it had a low-fanfare release in 2013. Haven't played it myself, though.

It's going to be released on December 16th. Are you thinking about Star Citizen perhaps?

Well in a a way Elite won't be done for a while, they still have a lot of features to implement apparently.

Yeah, but that's the same idea as saying that Civ 5 couldn't be considered for 2010 because the last expansion for it came out in 2013.

yeah it's kind of like calling minecraft 2011 GOTY

I actually think to make BE game of the year would be a joke. Its not really finished, the AI is dumb and bland, and it has not really lived up to expectation. It might get there eventually - like civ 5 has got there eventually. But at the moment it feels half baked. Its a 7/10 at best.

I dont think the list is as strong this year as it has been previously. There have been a number of titles that have failed to live up to expectations (im looking at you Rome 2), and BE is one of them.

I would say the "best" might be:

South Park stick of truth
Dark Souls 2
Divinity original sin

And you might be able to add in:

Elite Dangerous

And possibly:

Alien isolation

But yea, this year wasnt so great (IMO). the best year of recent times was 2011. Then you had Skyrim, Batman, Shogun 2, Deus Ex etc.

Nah, 2012 was better. Far Cry 3, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead, Dishonored, XCOM, FTL, Sleeping Dogs, Crusader Kings II.

2014 has been a lot better than 2013. The problem is that a lot of 2014 games are still too expensive for me, and yet the few 2014 games I do own are almost all better than the best 2013 game (I own).
