GR13 - AWE on LK's world map

Question: Do the long pauses make the game unplayable for you all? I would love to do a game like AG3 except always war. Problem is that it is slower than even this one. I can post a late game save.

The pauses were not too bad on my PC. Gave me time to get to the fridge for another:beer: The playing was well acceptable for me.

I do not know about AG3. Thanks for the link, ThERat. I will have a look.

I can tolerate the pauses, though they do contribute to making my rounds shorter and shorter, in terms of turns played, as the game progresses. :D I like the idea of another huge-map game.

Preturn: I doubt it will be worth my time to switch builds.
Move some units.

IBT: A worker gets captured. Some random bombardment and one landing.

1854 AD: Raze Townsville (australia).
Chalco (Aztec) Razed. The Aztecs are Destroyed
Raze two Russian Towns on a Northern Islands.
Change towns to wealth. We have enough units.

IBT: Perth Flips

1856 AD: On Greenland capture German and Raze Russian town. Move up on the final two towns on Greenland.
Capture Chinese Town on Hawaii (one more left)
Australia: Raze Port Augusta, Bathhurst, Ballarat, Cairns Recapture Perth.

1858 AD: Finish clearing Australian Continent. Take out Indian Island in South Pacific.
Germany Destroyed in Greenland
Russia Destroyed in Greenland Greenland is now ours.

I move troops/land next to the two Indian cities, last Australian island city, and 2 Chinese cities. On island with Mongol city, but still farther away.

1860 AD: Raze one Chinese city and kill 3 defenders in another.
Destroy the Australians.
Destroy the Indians.
Line up attacks and bombers on final Mongol city.

1862 AD:
Destroy the Chinese
Destroy the Mongols

Good game all. I will start the next game soon. My plan is to use the settings we used for the 250x250 map. We won't get more towns than that one since that one was near the limit of 512? towns.

Greebley, I can always see your images...

Good game, I think we overcame major obstacles (such as no early resources, missing out the GL), but played really well. It's basically a really great team here. :goodjob:

375 hours of playtime

lurker's comment: Congratulation on a great game, it was a very enjoyable read. Games with pictures are so much more entertaining to read. Again an excellent and very well played game :hatsoff:

Can you post a save? One after winning is fine, I just like to see the final world.

Excellent game as always guys! These huge and difficult AW games make for great reading. Can't wait for the next one :)

lurker's comment: Excellent game all of you guys!

375 hrs?! Dang, I couldnt play for that long.

I started to look at the AG3, but that game seems to not have much of a baring on any game I have seen at DG. I mean the start was very strong and they pop tech after tech and about 4 city/settlers.

I doubt you could expect to do that well, even if you had expansionist trait. Not to mention the AW will make life so much harder. You will not be wandering around looking for huts to pop for fear of getting several civs after you.

I have a question for the team... do you think it was worth it to switch to communism? In hindsight I think it would not have been as bad at the beginning if you had built courthouses in your better core cities before switching.

No horses, probably no iron, next to no shields, three fronts to defend--this is going to be a really impressive victory.

And so it was--congratulations to all.

Hmmm...375 hours of play by some pretty clever people. I think we could have cured cancer with that effort. ;)

Salarakas, I think the switch to communism was overwhelmingly worthwhile. We never had enough cities for corruption averaging to become a problem, and the game lasted long enough after the switch that the extra production we gained, relative to monarchy, was immense.

I cannot recall the details, but we had so few shields, we could not afford to build CH's at that point.

Although our starting position was quite bad in regards to production, strategically it was quite well. More or less we just had to fight 3 AIs in the very beginning. Just 2 AIs and us in whole Africa and 1 at the choke. Imagine we would have started in the middle of Asia. I think that would have been much more difficult. I don't want to be misunderstood, it was a great game especially the hunt and capture of the GLib with the armies we had was a very nice move.:)

I agree markh, have you tried this game as any European or Asian Civ? Almost impossible to survive on higher difficulties

No, I have not tried. My time is too limited to make an attempt on such a map as a single player. I even do not know how to set up such a game. :) At the moment I just play SGs. I really have to admit I am too lazy in single player games. I am really astonished about the results in the GOTMs. I win the GOTMs even on predator, but the top players there win it decades before me.
I love games like these where strategy is more important than speed. Furthermore I like the discussions especially in this team.

The choice of Egypt was based on this - I wanted a civ that had some challenge at the start (harder than say - Argentina), but wasn't completely surrounded by many civs - so that part at least wasn't chance. I didn't want to try the really hard civs on our first try.

For me, Communism vs Monarchy comes down to the production of the core cities. With all the desert and floodplains, I just think Communism made more sense. Once we had 50-odd cities cranking 10 shields a turn, it was just a matter of time.

I started GR14:

The GR14 Thread

I find communism vs monarchy depends on:

1) How long the game will last - games often end too soon to make communism worthwhile. Size of the map often corresponds to this.

2) Agree with M60A3TTS' statement. In this case Monarchy didn't look as good due to a real shortage of shields and thus units.

3) Science vs Shields. If we had remained monarchy and had tons of science producing citiies we would have gotten to Modern Armor giving us fewer but better units.
