Graphics flashing - any fixes?

Hi, I have a new laptop I just bought today, and I have installed Civ IV on it. It will load ok, but the graphics flash and distort making it impossible to play the game.

I have installed all the windows updates, installed the latest graphics driver, (SIS Mobile 3) and am running patch 1.74

The laptop exceeds the minimum spec so I am stumped. I am running Windows Vista Basic.

Anyone got any ideas?? I've been working at this for nearly 6 hours now!!!!! :confused::confused::confused: Please help me :cry:

For what it's worth, on my desktop system, I saw a lot of flashing in world-view (zoomed out above the clouds), when using NVidia driver version 175.16. Updating to 175.19 fixed the problem.

I don't know if they're making SLI laptops (ones with two NVidia graphics units), but if that's the case for your system, try running it in single GPU mode.

Good luck! And post more info about your system if the problem persists.

I don't know if they're making SLI laptops (ones with two NVidia graphics units), but if that's the case for your system, try running it in single GPU mode.

Thanks for the info, but I don't think that's the problem, I have all the latest drivers etc, and my graphics unit is a single one with shared memory, which I think may be something to do with it? I put an extra 2GB in the laptop to see if that improved things, but it just made it flash faster! lol :)
 
no dx10 is integral to vista - the dx9c install just adds the parts of it that microsoft left out of the dx10 release...
these integrated graphics chips create headaches mainly because no one really supports them - sis points to your vendor (fujitsu) and the vendor does not really create their own version of the new drivers in a timely manner :gripe:
have you tried the service pack?
one more thing: in the dxdiag program there is one tab which allows you to toggle hardware acceleration for directdraw and 3d on/off you could try playing around with those settings (just note how they where before you started :))

Thanks for all your help :) I've downloaded the service pack, but haven't got the time to install it now as I'm off out in a bit, but I'll let you know how I get on as soon as I do it :)

Hi Ori,

I have installed the service pack but it makes no difference :( does this mean I'm never going to be able to play the game?? :sad: Is there any way of reporting this to firaxis and see if they can fix the bug, or is it the responsibility of fujitsu?

Well I sorted it out, I installed XP and now civ runs beautifully :) It's bizarre but as long as it works, who cares why lol!!!

Hi, i'm having the same problem with CIV4. I think the problem is with the "SiS Mirage 3 Graphics", not with the Vista, DirectX or the game. Did you find a solution?

I presume that it was a software error caused by Vista Home Basic, maybe that operating system takes up too much resources, or the driver for the graphics card was not as good as it should be with Vista. All I know is when I installed XP instead, using the exact same hardware all the problems disappeared. Maybe an upgrade of Vista to Home Premium or even Professional would have had the same effect, but I didn't want to spend all that money to find out it wouldn't work!!!

Hope you find a solution.

I am also waiting for a usable driver for Mirage SiS. Until this one comes out, I have no chance to play on my Esprimo laptop. If it ever comes out.:nuke:
