Graphics problem

Installed Civ 4 complete and updates plus a couple of mods. With 3.19 and all mods I get units turning black or blocky (no colour but like a line diagram) , then I get "flashes" like lightning, the screen turns black, the laptop freezes completely and I have to reboot my laptop. I have reasonable laptop setup and play with all graphics settings on low and up to date drivers . Ati 5650, i5 processor. Any ideas?

Think I solved my own problem - checked other posts on this site and found one that suggested I download the Microsoft Runtime Installer which replaces all the Directx 9c items (dlls etc required to run Civ IV) that are not included as part of Directx11 which comes with my laptop. Early indications suggest this has fixed the problem but I haven't had time to check thoroughly. You'd think Directx 11 would automatically include all the components of earlier versions.
