Great Artist and Writer Issues

I am a fairly advanced player, so I am familiar with most of the nuances of the game. I am trying to establish a cultural victory, and have leaped out ahead with more tourism than my opponents. The problem right now is with great artists and great writers. For some reason, even though I have open art or writing slots, it does not offer me the option of using the great artist or writer to fill the slot. Instead I either have to use the writer for culture or the artist for a Golden age. I recently had a great musician, but I was able to fill a music spot – so I haven't had that issue with a musician yet. Am I missing something? Again I have plenty of open art and writing slots, I'm just not given the option of being able to fill them. Any tips or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much.

The writer/artist/musician has to be right next to a city tile to create a GW.

How many Civs are you playing against? There are a set number of works, and once they've been all used up, that's it.

I am playing a crazy game with 21 other civilizations! I'm not sure if the limit has been surpassed – didn't even know there was one. In terms of being next to the city, or even on it, the same still applies. What are the limits for each of the specialists in regards to the number of other civilizations?

yep, I bet you're out of great works. it's a bit frustrting for people who like to play unusually large games. I'm not sure why it's there (other than them only putting in so many)

There a mod out there to fix this?

It's not even unusually large games. I ran out of titles in a game with 12 civs including myself.

I am pretty certain that we just need to sit this one out, there's no way the devs are gonig to let this glitch slide by without doing something about it.

Welcome to Civfanatics forum :)

You can only create a great work if your great person has a name. If they are nameless, it means the game ran out of great works to create. I play with 22 civilizations and it happens to me around turn 280 on normal speed

If you check the files, there is about 70-75 great works of each type available. So in a game with 22 civs, if distributed evenly, each civ will only get 3 or 4.

Realistically, let's start with Great Artists. Until Industrial, most civs are limited to just the one Palace slot, unless they get Cathedrals or Sistine/Uffizi, so on average most civs will have far fewer Great Works of Art.

With Musicians, they get unlocked late (in the Renaissance) but Opera Houses will usually suffice for slots.

Great Works of Writing is where you will most likely run out first. In addition to the Amphitheater (one per city), civs can also build the Epics and Oxford, meaning it's not uncommon to see civs getting 3 or 4 Great Works of Writing by the Renaissance/Industrial eras.

We definitely need more. I really like listening/reading/looking at GWs but I've started fastforwarding through most of them because I've seen them already. 75 is a ridiculously small number imo.

Even if they run out of animations, they should probably have enough so that more civs can get them. Just have generic ones after a while.
