How can I tell what era the next great person will come from?

My neighbor is slightly ahead of me in accumulating great general points and I'm considering purchasing the classical era great general to secure it. It only makes sense to do this if the next great general will be of the medieval era (i.e. one that's 30 people points more expensive). If on the other hand the next great general will also be of the classical era then there's no point, I'll just wait and buy it with my own great people points.

I know you can't know which specific great general is next in the queue, but Is there a way to know when the queue changes era? Is there a set number of great people per era before it changes, or perhaps the era only changes with the game era? If anyone can shed some light on this it would be very helpful.

You can get Great People from before both the current world era and your own civ's current era if enough have been run thru. You can check how many great people of a certain type have been acquired from a certain era by looking at the recruitment history and filtering for, in this case, Great Generals. Here's how many Great Generals there are per era:
Classical 4
Medieval 3
Renaissance 3
Industrial 4
Modern 4
Atomic 4
Information 2

edit2: forgot to account for GGs that later got replaced in DLC

Not sure if the game will start to skip great people if they lag far enough behind current game era tho. Also, the order of great people within those era brackets is random, but you can't change which one shows up just by reloading saves until you get what you want. If you take the same actions in a game, you'll get the same RNG, and thus the same next Great General. You can however make a save one turn before you want to buy (or would naturally acquire) the great person and make slightly different moves to affect the RNG. Works well if you have a few units (of any type) that you can keep sending in random directions each time, like a really indirect type of lock picking.

That all being said, if you don't want to savescum, I'd say assume that the game must run thru all Classical Great Generals before offering the first Medieval one. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

edit: here's what the wiki says:
Finally, all Great People from a certain type now come in a "queue," arranged by era. The queue starts with People from the Classical Era, and finishes with those from the Information Era. People from the same Era always appear in random order, but when all that belong to a certain Era are attracted, the next - Era queue will start, and the amount of GPPs required to earn them will rise. After all Great People from certain type are attracted, it becomes impossible to earn any more of them.

Its a MP game so the save hack is not actionable :)

I'm in the medival era. Our world era is classical but the era is about to change to medieval. No GG's have been recruited.

From what you're saying, the next two GG's are basically guaranteed to be classical and so there is no point in me purchasing one. I should just wait, safe in the knowledge that once my opponent takes one, the next one will still only cost 30 points and I'll easily grab it. Or conversely, you're saying I can't deny my opponent a GG by waiting for the classical era to end and then purchasing the 'last' classical era GG (because there's guaranteed to be another classical era GG after).

Yeah, once your opponent takes one, you'll easily be able to snag the next one, and the game has to go thru all classical era GPs before it can move on to the medieval era. Also worth noting: once the world moves into the Medieval era, the Classical era great people will have a discount put on their cost, to prevent the great people from lagging too far behind the current game era.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure the game will skip Great People if it moved into a later era. So if no GGs have been recruited, a Classical one is in the queue, and the world moves into Medieval, that GG is the only Classical one that will exist in your game. The next one up will be a Medieval GG. So if you want Classical GG, you can either wait for the next one if it will come during the Classical era, or make a move to snatch this one.

That's right - if the world era progresses to medieval before this general is acquired by any civ, the general after this one will be medieval.

That was my understanding as well. After the era changes, there will be whatever Great People were being worked towards at that time, then once they're gone, they'll be replaced by the new era Great People.

Oh! Well based on what Vargas, Rob and Linklite are saying it's actually pretty crucial that I snatch this GG. That will leave my opponent with another 30 points to make up before they can get another GG.

If I right, you probably want to recruit the GG list after the new era begins.
  • If you snatch him now, there will still be a classical GG in the queue for your rival to recruit.
  • If you rival recruits the GG before the change of era, there will be a new classical GG for you to recruit in your own time.
  • If you don't snatch him, and your rival doesn't recruit before the new era, patronise him on that first turn - you'll get the slightly cheaper classical GG, and he'll be replaced by a slightly more expensive medieval GG.
  • If you do nothing and your rival doesn't recruit the GG before the new era, he'll get the classical GG, leaving you with the medieval GH instead. Of course, ifnyou try my trick, but the rival is human, starts his turn before you and has the same trick in mind, this scenario will also play out.
So, if you definitely want the classical GG, snatch him now. If you are the first to take your go on each turn or if you think your rival isn't up to the same trick, wait until the new era starts, then on that turn patronise the GG, which is the best outcome.

While that's the total number of generals available across all versions of the game, in actuality you can only recruit 3 Medieval and 4 Industrial generals with all of the DLC, since Genghis Khan is replaced by Timur in R&F, while Bolívar is replaced by San Martín in the NFP.
