Great Scientist not working

Hey guys, I don't post a lot and Im not sure where this should go, but I'm playing Warlords (WOTM IV). I have made 2 Great Scientist' and I assigned them to discover a new technology for me. They go through there animation (like someone pouring water on the Wicked Witch of the East) where they melt into the ground & a light shines upward, but later on, I notice I don't have that technology.

It's happened to me 2 times now. I'm not a great player and can not afford these scientists to fail :crazyeye: So, is this a known issue where the Scientist does not produce what he promised? It tells you what technology he will discover for you, but I never get it. cries...
 
Actually, a great scientist only adds a certain amount of beakers towards research for that specific tech. If that amount equals or surpasses the amount of beakers that tech costs, you get it, otherwise you still have to research the remaining beakers yourself.
 
When you hover over the light bulb button, it will tell you whether it's going to outright research the technology, or provide a fixed number of research points towards it.

You really shouldn't bother doing that unless it's either late in the game, or the technology in question is one that gives a bonus for the first to discover it, and you don't want to miss out.

Otherwise, you should have the Great Scientist establish his Academy in your city with the highest research points that doesn't already have one. It doesn't take all that long for the persistent research bonus to catch up to and exceed the instant one.
 
It is also possible that the scientist is a fake one (Creationist for example).
 
Oh my, great answers all. Now that I think about it, I didnt get the reseach immediately but I remember picking one of them to research and it said it would only take 3 turns. I was like, I wonder why such a short period. Now I know.

I don't remember getting an option to reseach an Academy. How do you do that? Is it a building option for the city that he is in?
 
Its one of the action buttons for a great person typically. Build their special Building, use their Special ability, rush a tech or join the pop as a super specialist.

You should see a pic of a light bulb (discover), a pic of the scientist (join pop) and a pic of a building (science academy).
 
Personally I would never waste a GS (or a GE) on a light bulb, there are plenty of Greats that are much less usefull for that.

GSs lightbulb more useful techs and create more beakers, though. I don't lightbulb that much, in general, but philosophy to found Taoism when it takes 25 turns can be great, or lightbulbing Education during a Liberalism race (and supposedly Liberalism is possible as well).
 
Speaking of Great Person discoveries... Does anyone have a page, or link, to a list of what tech a Scientist, Prophet, etc will discover? That would be a huge bonus to know which early techs to get out of the way quick, so when my philosophical leader gets to caste system, I can put the mass GP's to the most effective use.
