Actually, I would still take good old Ludwig Van over Phil; there is no better way to eat breakfast and get ready for a game of civ on a Sunday morning than to crank the 9th up full blast, particularly if it's a version that has deep throaty Germans doing the choral stuff. Glass' Mishima soundtrack, on the other hand, is the perfect choice for a pre-civ ordered-in dinner.
Handel's coronation anthems cuts in as a close third.
I had to vote Beethoven (like so many others) simply for body of work. Even though I might have voted Vivalvi if he had been listed. The Four Seasons is my favorite album of the genre. Unless you count John Williams
My favorite classical composer is Carl Orff. The Carmina Burana is my all time favorite classical piece. But, I suppose a 20th century composer is out of bounds for your poll. So, I guess I'll have to go with George Fridric Handel. The Messiah is a very moving piece of music.
I voted for Beethoven. The outstanding quality of all his works (mountains outside the symphonies) makes this a no brainer. I do have have to say that my favourite however is Prokofiev.
To try to spread the votes, I decided not to go for body of work and voted for Debussy's La Mer although I was disappointed not to see Shostakovich on the list, as he's a particular favourite of my girlfriend.
There are so many great composers and works:Vivaldi's Four Seasons,Beethoven's 5th Sinfonia,Mozart numerous compositions,Bach,Verdi,Tschaikowsky,Berlioz etc.
Out of the list above the only one I really dislike is Chopin;don't know why just dislike his work.
You left out Rossini!! How can I cast my vote for the composer of the overture for the Barber of Seville? (the single most beautiful piece of music ever written)
The man wrote Largo al Factotum, and, if I am not mistaken La Donne et Mobile.
