Football World Cup.
Can I be bothered to take issue with those who state that something that interests only one country is the greatest sporting event in the world? Apparently not.

The best sporting event in the world? In my view, its the high school football playoffs in Texas. I'll never forget one of my old schools, Commerce, losing to Sealy in the championship match two years out of three, then coming back a couple of years later to beat them in a nail-biter of a game.

Yes, when I say football, I refer to what most Americans call football, that which others might refer to as US rules football.

The World Cup is neat, but I don't like having to wake up at 3am to watch a soccer match. Shame on US TV companies for not having tape delay available.

The next World Cup is in Germany summer 2006. Hopefully many of the matches will kick off in the evening there – say 9pm which (I think) is 3pm in New York.
Even 4pm kick offs would make that 10am in NY.

Well, hopefully, at the next World Cup, the US squad can repeat its performance at the last one. Getting to the second round of the playoffs isn't bad for a nation where everyone allegedly hates soccer.

It has to be the FIFA World Cup. I am quite passionate about a lot of sports, but Football is the only one that can drive me to tears.

I remember several games that have done that. I have followed my team, Birmingham City Football Club since I was 3.

World Cup '98: England VS Argentina. Most England fans will agree with me on this...it was gutting, I hated David Beckham for nearly 2 years after getting sent off, before I understood the circumstances.

The English League Cup Final 2000: Birmingham City VS Liverpool. Birmingham City lost the final having come back to a draw twice. It came down to a sudden death penalty shoot out. Liverpool came out on top.

The English Division One Promotion Playoff Final 2002: Birmingham City VS Norwich City. Again, this came down to penalties. Having lost 3 years in a row in the Playoffs in penalties, I was conviced we had lost already. We drew even for the first few...but then they missed on their last shot...and the young Birmingham-born player, Darren Carter stepped up for our last penalty...fired it in. We got promotion to the Premier League, I didn't stop celebrating for days. I couldn't speak, because I had shouted so much.

World Cup of course. Probably responsible for more sickies than any other single cause...including hangovers.

Football is the #1 sport in the world in terms of audience and popularity.

The World Cup stops the economical life all over Europe, Russia, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Japan, Korea, and now China.

The only places where Cricket WC is more important than football WC are Pakistan, India and Australia. The Rugby WC would be the main event for New Zealand. The Hockey WC for Canada. And the Superbowl for the US.

However, worldwidely, it's definitly the FIFA World Cup.

Marla Singer, you're lying. The largest audience of a Sport Event is the one of the Superbowl with more than a billion people watching it.

I'm amazed to see the Superbowl isn't a choice we can pick in this poll.

get yourself a dictionary: lying means INTENTIONALLY telling something that is not true to gain an advantage by deceiveing the other person. Very impolte to use this temr here.

also, nobody but Americans cares about the Super Bowl. China cares about the football World Cup (soccer, to ingorant colonists). there's over a billion Chinese - I think your precious superbowl is out of the poll on this one alone :p

I love to watch the Superbowl... GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

Most non-Americans (who even watch it) just watch the Superbowl out of curiosity, where the FIFA World Cup nearly stops regular life in huge (Europe, South and Central America, Africa, Asia, Middle East) parts of the world.

LOL@EmpireOfVirtue thinking the Superbowl is the most watched sports event!

In fact, I believe figures show that the 2002 world cup was the most watched television (not just sport) event in history - something like nearly 50 billion cumulative viewer-hours were watched over its course.
