Does anybody ever build this? I am tempted, purely because I hate trying to take out civs that have built it. It's laborious!

Very rarely; on Prince and above the AI always seems to get there first. I usually don't even try as I'm too busy building Hanging Gardens or Hagia Sophia around the same time. I once tried to build it as China, just because it seemed like the thing to do at the time, but didn't make it.

in multiplayer it is indeed very good. so good that with equally skilled players u can postphone any attack until artillery if someone builds it.

Hence it is often banned in MP. Also in team it is OP since it applies to all player in a team if one player builds it.

I never build it simply because the on-map graphic is ugly, likewise I try to avoid conquering civs who've built it for the same reason.

It looked way cooler in Beyond the Sword Warlords...

I'll built it if I am running a civ that will focus on building wonders and culture rather than a military.

I will build it if there is an obvious geographic hinderance already in place such as highlands or jungle terrain that can be further exploited to slow down troops. This muck and mire terrain is easily defended by a limited number of ranged weapondry.

I will also consider building it if a close enemy has a unit like a jaguar and I am in prime territory exploitable by said unit. An offsetting build to remove the UU abilities.

Well I guess in SP u dont need a GW to defend against one or more stupid AIs. Also u r probably on the offence more then defence and GW are not of much use if ur conquering someone only when pulling back or holding a position.

So I understand that when not playing smart humans it might not feel like it s of much use to build GW. Playing humans however.....

Put it this way. there is a reason most high level MP games are played with an agreement to ban the great wall.....

I only try to build the Great Wall when I'm playing OCC, because the AIs always declare war on me, due to my small army.

Nevertheless, I rarely get the chance to build it, because I prioritize other wonders.

Well, its kept my backwards Korean empire safe from attack by nuclear-armed superpowers for over a hundred years now, so it can't be too bad.:D

AI assigns a very high priority for it, so no, it's one of the two wonders I've never built. (Not counting the DLC wonders.)

And as you mentioned the main benefit is often wonder denial.

GW is down there in my priorities, but I do miss those Great Engineer points.

Isn't that what Stonehenge is for? I think the only time I ever built the Great Wall was, indeed, when I was playing China, just to get it in Beijing.

Isn't that a bit redundant? A hill/jungle already takes all movement points of the units (those that move two hexes, which is most of them, early on), so the GW doesn't add anything to it.

I would say the opposite makes much more sense. If you have flat land with no natural hinderances a GW makes much more sense, stealing those movement points.

That said, I never build it either, there's more important things to build and on immortal you can't have it all.

I tried attacking a civ that had this AND Himeji Castle. It didn't work too well.

Artillery

Form up rifle meatshields in front

Make sure you have reserves and reinforcements streaming in

Go

Well, only redundant to the extent that you're facing those two movement point units you mention. So not entirely.

But yeah, you get more out of it if your territory is open.

In the past month my first war target has built Great Wall within two turns after me DoWing it. I very rarely build it myself, but in a recent game a city-state wanted me to build it for influence and it felt like a good deal so I started on it and then I lost it by one turn.

Hate it!

Only in Multiplayer do I ever go for it. As England or a science based civ I will go for it (or even as a blitz civ like Denmark). This way I can snipe a city or two from a different player in multiplayer with my units and easily keep it despite a smaller army (because I like to run a smaller tech empire normally in multi). Great Wall can be a powerful weapon in multi.

playing as China,
if i have the right amount of Chu-Ko-Nu/warriors at the front, or heading towards the front, i find the great wall poses only a minor impediment to my conquest

if i see the great wall, i am actually glad they spent all those extra turns building it. less units they could have been building to use against me and for me to make *disappear*

even if enemy civ has the Himeji Castle does little to impede my progress towards total absorption/enslavement of enemy

just more wasted turns in my mind
which is what i want for them before i enslave their population to all my whims and excesses

i dont build the great wall/himeji castle because i'd rather use those turns to build as many Chu-Ko-Nu as necessary for my defense or conquest

as always, production is adjusted for events going on, "on the ground"
