After going on 3 weeks now, I am losing my patience. This is entirely unacceptable and I frankly, I am about in a suing mood. What do you guys say to a class action possibly against 2k if they don't act immediatly and maybe if we win we can keep other game companies from releasing beta software as release code only to make their customers wait weeks to actually be able to get the game/program running. $50 is way way way too much to do anything less than pass the cost back onto them for cheating us out of our money.

Because software, for the most part is un-returnable for full refunds, it is easy incentive for them to just sell beta code to make a deadline, because once it's sold, it's sold. So it's not skin of their nose, they don't have any real incentive yet to actually make sure the code of the game/program truely is quality or not. So lets give it to them if they don't make amends very soon. Lets give them a reason to make doubly SURE the game or program works before releasing it.

It's like opening your favorite present on christmas morning, only to find out that Santa took a hammer to it and smashed it up.

It's actually worse than that. At least you can take that present back and exchange it for one that works!

dont worry you're not alone on this one.... they said the patch is coming up and they will be releasing it short..... well..... that shortly i think means a couple of weeks again..... that's really frustrating .... they keep the customers waiting....

:goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: for the beta version of civ4

Right, that might be good news. My faith in corporations actually working an honest days work these days are slim to none, so I am sure they skipped a few days and/or are just barely taking a look at it to say the obligatory "hhhmm..yes.. I see. OK" ~STAMP! Aproved!~ in a matter of a few hours. They aren't losing any money over it I am almost ceartain so whats the rush?

You can rest asured they are all out for the Holidays if they are here in the states.. I guess this to be the first instance of wanting the programers to
"no speka engish"

The last two games I bought hasn't been finished by the programmers, but at least EA Sports had a patch ready after a week for FIFA 06. If they don't stop releasing BETA-versions of games I may start downloading the games from the major companies.

My respect to smaller companies like "FunCom" who postponed the release of their game "Dreamfall" to be sure they get rid of all the bugs before release :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

The larger companies should learn from the smaller companies here!

Well, it was apparently sent for QA a week or so ago. If it hsn't been released, it might suggest that they found something still needing to be resolved. In a way, that might be good news - better to send out a 'good' patch than one with more bugs.
agreed
plus keep in mind its not in Firaxis hands now, they make the patch and hand it off to 2K... ick your surprised?

they'd rush it out if we would all pay 40$ for it too haha

What, and release another poorly written batch of code? Do you want them to fix the bugs? Q.A. takes time, and the delays only prove that 2kGames is serious about pleasing it's customers by fixing the bugs.

e_a_olson - that was sarcasm, right?

If not...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

2k...HAHAHA...Serious about pleasing...HAHAHA...customers...HAHAHA.

The only thing the delays prove to me is just howed screwed this game is. Wait, I already knew that.

It would make sense that they will have SOMETHING out before Christmas, as I'm sure 2k does not want a meltdown on Christmas morning when a large minority of the people who receive the game call tech support to complain....

I think the patch will be out next week....I don't know if they would want to release it Thanksgiving week...I'm looking for next week...

That said, if it takes 6 months for them to get a GOOD patch out, that's fine by me...I would rather have a patch that works, instead of a patch that causes more screw-ups...

You think this was bad. You should have played Black and White 2... There is one game mode... no multiplayer.. no sandbox.. no skirmish or anything. You just play through the story mode over and over... not to mention the computer has no real AI... it doesn't react to your decisions it just repeats the same script over and over. Not to mention the game was buggier than this too. To me CivIV has been an awesome game, especially after the dissappointment from BW2.

I'm sorry for all you guys that are still having problems.

you all didnt play star wars knights of the old republic 2 huh?

it took more than 3 months for the patch to pass the "QA" from lucasarts....

I'm addicted to Age of Empires 3 now, picked it up last week....

....Hmm.... what patch? what Civ 4? ;)

Jokes aside, I hope they release before thanksgiving. I have a 4 day weekend coming up, and only 1 day of family celebrations ;)

Actually it works a little differently. So let me enlighten those that "think" they know how it works:

Customer support goes through customer problems, usually helping people configure their computers properly.

If a customer claims to be victim of a bug and the general config check works out fine then details are requested

Then comes a savegame to help reproduce problems. These then get placed inside the firms internal bug tracking system in whatever shape or size that may be.

The QA Manager (Now that is short for Quality Assurance Manager) then works with the Lead Tester to assign tasks to the programmers. They then try and fix a "reproducable" bug and build a new "daily". These get passed to the Lead Tester who does a so-called first run (checks the basics of an installed version) and then moves it to the internal testers.

Repeat this process for a few days (not to mention this process starts after the game goes gold).

When a gold anouncement is made, 2 weeks need to be added for production of CD, packaging, manual etc. and in those 2 weeks high prio bugs are attempted to fix and checked.

New bugs are fixed and old bugs are rechecked (to avoid repetition of bugs thought to be fixed).

Once this has reached a certain level, the patch is then compiled and handed over to the publisher.

This process again takes roughly 2 weeks as the patch is tested there. A new high prio bug might be found and the 2 week rule might be extended but in most cases when a patch is delivered to a publisher, its usually a 2 week waiting window before the developer gets the go ahead to publish the patch publically.

Anouncement that the patch was passed to the publisher was just under 1.5 weeks ago, so if all goes well (and when an anouncement is made it usually does) we can expect the first patch earliest this friday, latest this coming monday (if all goes well).

What a lot of you fail to realize is just how complicated fixing bugs and building patches has become so it would be nice if you do not continuesly ask for apologies and wait patiently for those to finish their work. Believe it or not it costs them many a weekends away from their family during "crunch time", time they would rather spend outside the office rather than listenting to those that expect perfection out of every box.

Console games are easier to make because of ONE hardware level. PC games are much more difficult. There are 50 different CPUs, 100s of mainboards, 1000s of graphic cards, more soundcards etc. Combine them in their different configuration probabilities and you are litterally looking at over a million system configurations and that is NOT including bodged driver configurations, user stupidity (excuse the term but unfortunately true), messed windows registry, viral invections and 3rd party applications running in the background.

There is more too it to think and those that shout the loudest believe it or not are, in my experience, those that do not even know how to copy a file from one directory to another, never heard what a patch is all about, do not know what a driver is for and could never tell you what their system hardware is if you asked them. Is this my frustration? No, I work in this industry and I know what it is like to be on the receiving end of those that do not know half of what they are actually talking about. So please, give those guys a little breather and excercise some patience because even if a game might not be good, years of work still went into it and if there are "SOME" stability problems, wait them out so they can find a cause and fix it in their own time. Nothing will run away and "ALL THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT".

PS: I think it is a shame that manners these days have fallen so low these days...

I don't Know what they do but i only want to START actually that game... no matter how!

Amen Eerazor. I too am desperately awaiting the patch so I can play unhindered by bugs, but the reality is that it will come out when it comes out. No amount of complaining and bi*ching will change that date.

I think that if people had realistic expectations on how long these things take in the first place, the level of complaining would be much lower, so thank you for this information.

We all need to remember that 99% of what you read is either rumor, or someone repeating rumor, and not to get all bent out of shape when that rumor does not come true.

It sucks that I can't play, but is that really the end of the world? We've been waiting a year for this game, what is a few more weeks? Go read a book or something!

book? hhaha didnt we burn all those? oh wait... i think i read that IN a book! egads!

Can anyone say "Temple of Elemental Evil" I think I am still waiting for the 'official' patch for that one! Luckily some community members created their own! WHen you have seperate publisher and development companies they often spend a lot of time playing the blame game and refusing to spend the $$ in patching something they believe is someone elses responsibilty. Meanwhile, Joe Gamer gets stuck with a shoddy product, so instead of spending his time playing a great game has to come to a forum such as this and vent!

Seriously, I hope the patch is finished soon and helps address the multitude of issues people are suffering with.
