[GS] GS impressions/random observations thread.

My biggest first impression is how absolutely gorgeous the new art assets are. The art team has really outdone themselves. Not only do the textures and models seem to be improved, but it looks like they've revised the lighting engine as well.

I'm a little disappointed in disaster frequency--and I have it set one three. Looks like I'll be cranking it up to four next game. ;)

I've been playing the Inca, and I have to say that they're super strong but situational.

I've noticed Mali is doing absolutely horribly in my game. It's several hundred turns in and he just founded his second city. Kristina's not doing so great, either.

Kupe is a powerhouse, even in the hands of the AI.

I love the new resource system. As a pacifist, I'm raking in the money selling all my resources. :p

I went with Disaster Intensity 2, looks like i'll be turning it up to 4 in the next game. I had a Volcano next to my second city yet it only erupted once in 298 turns.

Desert Inca with a Petra: Very, very silly.

I hate it for this reason. It's ridiculously abusable.
And annoying, as the AIs keep coming back over and over asking for things.

Below you can see the penalty to loyalty from grievances. The problem is that its been a few turns since I eliminated her and if she isn't in the game, she can't have grievances against me. It looks like the penalty is stuck there and won't go away. -10 is a considerable penalty to just be there forever. I might let the city flip then take it back to see what happens...

Edit: flipping the city them conquering it didn't remove the penalty.

The tornadoes have a fabulous stereo effect as you move them to the left or right side of your screen.

Volcano Alley:
Mount Agung, Krakatoa
--------------------------Mount Semeru----Mount Tambor

Possibly a little excessive.
There is another (Galunggung) between the former Indonesian lands and my homeland, and another (Hamp'atu) to my west. And WaynaPutina is 6 hexes Southwest of that. Oh and Mt. Merapi is west of Jambi a piece

Edit: Another Volcano, Kelud sits directly SE of Mount Tambora. That's FIVE volcanoes along a curved 6 hex chain. So far.

I've also evidently annoyed my neighbors. In my defense, Russia forward settled me. Underneath the elusive Chocolate Hills. That was going to be the extent of my conquests, then Ottomans and Indonesia joint declared on me. Indonesia wouldn't surrender their cities, and I didn't even know where the Ottomans were so...

Yeah. I'm annoyed at Eleanor, however. We were buddies until Norway dragged her into war. We had just made a good trade deal and everything!
Unfortunately, her border is showing two hexes south of Volcano alley here, and alas, I don't know where Harald is (there was a longboat centuries ago). I don't really want to fight her, because this is an absolutely love natural border.

You found Thangorodrim :D.

This is why I'd love to see material resources also have an empire-wide benefit to your economy (outside of trade), so as to force military players to make a choice between their domestic economy & building more units!

I'd like to see that, as well; there's plenty of room to expand and improve on the new resource system.

So in my first GS game, America declares a surprise war on me totally out of the blue. I am Maori. Because of the surprise war, I have 75 grievances in my favor. I like that. I conquer Cincinnatti and America's capital, Washington. America sues for peace, offering to cede both cities and give me gold. He's desperate because my forces of Toa and archers are about to take his last 3 cities. I accept peace. Roosevelt gives me the "I like when there is peace on my continent. Bully for you!" message. Kinda weird since he started the whole thing with a surprise war. But now because he ceded 2 cities, he has grievances against me and so he denounces me and hates me. I get that he has grievances against me for keeping 2 of his cities. That makes sense. But his behavior still seems bizarre to me, rather schizophrenic. He declared a surprise war against me, then ceded cities for peace, then likes me that there is peace, now hates me because I kept the cities which he ceded to end a war he started!

I found an utterly ridiculous wall. Unfortunately the 'death' side is pointed at me. That tile that says 'River' with my spearman? Yeah, there is another mountain range to the south of it, that wraps around the river and jungle tile to the west, completely impassable as well. I planted an encampment where the spearman stands. Eleanor has founded a city on that jungle two tiles to the east. If she wants to attack me again, she has to plow through a single tile wide mountain pass, while I can burrow through the mountain range.

On the other side of my great desert, I found the Ottomans. They decided to go to war solo this time. It didn't go well for them, but then it hadn't for a while, they had a lot of pillaged areas around Istanbul before I got there. I burned down one of their cities, took Istanbul and two others. No one else in the world even cares.

Really the big thing I need to do now is fill in the gaps between my regions (former Indonesia and former Ottoman Empire). Lots of barbarians in the desert, especially where Mohenja-Daro stood. My pet city states may have stomped on that place during one of the wars.

Best change so far: all the Great People on one screen. No scrolling

Bonus Resources, too, could do with having an empire-wide effect. Maybe even bring back aspects of the "food diversity" mechanic we had in Civilisation IV.

Weird. I also have it set to 3 and I am getting hit by natural disasters constantly. I've been hit by 4 floods in the exact same location back to back every time (and that only stopped once I built a dam), 2 tornadoes, and 1 hurricane!!!!!

Clearly not enough people read The Silmarillion any more :p.

I think I'm going to be downloading all the disaster mods. Greater disasters. Greater early disasters. We'll see, but 2 is whatever.

And totally agree on the resource system. It gives pacifist players a reason to build encampments too. I was bummed my neighbors had horses because I couldn't give them any more.

AI is pretty aggressive in this game I started.

AI is still manically attacking CS's, but it's Barbarosa and Genghis, so that's nothing to grouse about. But the AI put walls up at the encroaching cities TOUT DE SUITE. Barbarosa encroaches on me without shame, but continues to want to be my friend. Since it now costs diplomatic favor to merely ask the AI not to forward settle, I have no options other than war. Loyalty won't do the job. I start moseying units up and denounce, but when Barbarosa asks what my units are doing there, I have no option to ignore the request. So, I declare war. There goes 150 grievances.

Also got hedged out of religion at the speed of light. I built a couple of holy sites and go Divine Spark, but forget it. Not nearly good enough.

Diplomatic victories are not fun. If you are in the lead, the AI sinks all of its votes to guarantee you lose a vote. Then you're stuck waiting another 20-30 turns to do it again. A pure slog.
