Yeah the grey is no data, so there are no shades of grey. It is a sliding scale with the six colours in descending order, with red appearing first and green last. Also in some cases it is possible that there should be two or more colours for some nations, but what I did just put the colour of the first occurrence. Also the map is a modern one, so that can be a bit off putting wit this map.

So far everyone is way off.

Based on that description ("First Occurence"/"modern map may be off putting"), I'd say first appearance in a Civilization game, and most of the map does fit (Peru=Inca, Tunisia=Carthage; Black Cambodia = Khmer in Civ4 and Green Thailand = Siam in Civ5). However Mali/Songhai and Zulu are lacking, but we got the Congo.

So, are the modern nations stand-ins for historical Empire?

(But what about San Marino?)

You are correct. It is about when civilizations first appeared in the Civilization series. Some of them grouped together which is why all areas in Italy were grouped together. Sorry about forgetting the Mali. But Congo is for Zulu.

Red is for Civ 1. Blue is for Civ2. Yellow is for Play the World. Brown is for Conquests. Black is for Beyond the Sword. Green is for Civ5. That means I needed a colour for Civ4 due to forgetting Mali.

So there were no new Civs in Civ3 Vanilla, Civ4 Vanilla (except Mali) and Civ4 Warlords? Well, there are some other problems with this kind of map, where do the hittites figure f.e., and what are the Celts? UK = England I can get behind (see Churchill or Victoria as leaders).

however the Zulu are South Africa/Zimbabwe/Mocambique/Zambia, not Congo. That's many thousand kilometers off.

I need some time for a map.

zulu in congo? rofl

When I compared the map it was the area that had most of Zulu in it. Well it was tough since many of the civs are ancient and do not properly represent well on a map of modern states.

And England is UK on the Map, since when I coloured in England it also coloured the other parts.

the zulu ethnicity has never existed outside of south africa

if you're talking about the wider bantu peoples, that's a ridiculous extrapolation of terms. you might as well group all germanic or turkic peoples together.

So, next try, don't know if this has been done already, there's a good chance after all.

I've seen this map before on a certain well known encyclopaedia during one of my editing/tidying up rounds. I believe it's countries by type of legislature? Blue is nations with bicameral legislatures, the rest are unicameral but I don't recall what black means.

It claims they have no legislature. Which is blatantly wrong. All three have one (at least at the time the map was created, not sure the current status in Egypt).

I think the Iroquois/Native Americans were new in Civ3 Vanilla, he just couldn't put that anywhere on the map except America. I think the same is true with the Hittites and Turkey, or the Celts and either France or the UK.

Actually there was the Sioux in Civ2, but since America was in Civ1, I choose them, since they came first. In PTW, was when the Ottomans first appeared and they came before the Hittites and the Byzantine Empire in the scheme of things. The Celts were Ireland on the map, since that is where they eventually settled, even though they started out in the French region.

For Zulu I got it from [wiki]Zulu Empire[/wiki] and from that it did not go into South Africa, but in hindsight it might have been better to choose Zimbabwe instead.

You live and learn from your mistakes. Of course this is not the current map, just me correcting my previous map.

The Zulus were in the first incarnation of Civilization. But we do need a map or someone else make one.

Ignore the small Pacific and Caribbean countries.

The darker, the greater. Grey means no data.
