Condom ads. Not again:( :( . Do any of you know of the preteen posters that post here?

This is probably who needs to see these ads the most anyways. Older folks know already. Younguns are stupid enough to do things without taking proper precautions. I mean, older people can be stupid too, but you know what I'm sayin...

There is nothing dirty or inappropriate about condom ads. It isn't pornography.

It is right up there with headache remedies and feminine hygeine in my book.

Although I do question the advertiser's wisdom in targeting that product at a group of people who seem to spend 24 hours a day on the computer...

Yeah, try to say that to conservative parents...

Get them online. I'll tell them. I'll put them in a time machine six years into the future when they are suprised and horrified grandparents, then whisk them back to today and ask if the ads are not better than ignorance...

Not much can be done about those condom ads...

They are probably showing them again because of the World AIDS Day (yesterday).

Yes, I know a few preteens who post here, especially in the demogame. And condoms do promote (if not indirectly) certain pre-maritial acts...)

You mean like blowing them up full of air and tying crazy (smelly) circus balloons? Or hooking them around the sink spigot and filling them with water and then pulling them away from the spigot and watching them spray water everywhere?

Oh... you mean protected premarital sex. Well, still seems more judicious than the unprotected variety... I'd prefer unmarried couples use them...

The best protection from AIDS, other STDs, and unwanted pregnancy is abstinance ;) Condoms do NOT promote abstinance!

I think that's what chieftess was saying :) The parents would rather their kids not be having sex at all then having sex because they *think* it's safe.

I know what you guys are saying. And I appreciate the idea. Of course parents want to protect their children, and I have seen some parents go to great lengths to deny that their children were breaking those moral taboos. Not quite a healthy situation.

It is part of a debate that has raged in the abortion threads, and there is no way I want to argue it with my two favorite moderators. It comes down to whether you think you can convince people to wait till they are married (and that that is a good idea, not something I would agree with), or whether you want to make sure that if they do find they are compelled to "go all the way", they do so with the best chance of avoiding stds and pregnancy, which is indeed condoms.

I would agree that this is something that should be handled "family by family" up to the age when potential sexual activity becomes society's problem... ie the onset of the ability to get pregnant, the chance of having sex. At which point I'd prefer the idea was drummed into people's heads that they are risking a great danger by not using condoms. Of course using condoms is still dangerous, and there is nothing wrong with telling kids the best way is abstinence. But, but, but... but we can't afford to say no to condom education.

When we talk of reforming morality (something beyond the scope of this thread but let me go on) I have long had the idea that we might be better off as a society promoting "condom virginity"- the notion that you are a virgin until you have sex without a condom, and you wait till you are married to cross that threshold. There would still be room for families that believe in total abstinence (although you might be horrified to learn what some folks do to circumvent abstinence taboos), but "the rest of us", which includes most people I have ever met (I have so far met in person two individuals who "wait for marriage", and thankfully for them, they are dating each other), would have a safer, healthier self esteem morality. And pregnancy out of wedlock would be relegated to the celebrities.

As for the ads, I'm not a big fan of corporatism, and the ads can be provocative. These are things that ought to be given away, not sold.

Can't say I agree totally but that's not the topic of the thread, although I have read the many threads on the subject over in OT in the past :)

However, I do think they should be given away...if they REALLY care about having teens using them.

Of course, I also think they don't really have a place at a gaming site! Come on! Advertise a new graphics card! Or bigger hard drive! Or new processor! Something COOL! :D

And as my wife will attest, most of those things are pretty good at promoting abstinence!;)

Well, in that case....I guess it is appropriate.

I must confess that sometimes I forget that there are kids posting here. Anyway, condoms are as significant as fem protection, (although I dont see them pushed here)

No kidding! I remember a few months ago being in an abortion debate with Cgannon and saying all of this horribly trollish stuff and then one day he says to his PBEM crew: "My mom turns off the computer at midnight" and I look and he was a young teen. Is there a smiley for "embarassed"?
