Another 64 people were wounded in the lunch-hour attack, public prosecutor Daniel Reynders said, adding that the gunman was among the two dead.

There was much confusion over the events, with initial reports of more than one gunman.

At least two people were killed and more than a dozen injured on Tuesday in the eastern Belgian city of Liège in a grenade attack by several armed men, Belgian news media reported. The reports said several people were wounded seriously, including a 2-year-old girl, and that at least one of the assailants remained at large.

A reporter for Sud Presse who was on the scene said that three attackers carrying assault rifles had lobbed at least four grenades toward the bus stop and fired their weapons near a Christmas market on central Saint Lambert square just after noon.

No kidding about the confusion - just a few seconds ago the story talked about gunmen with Kalashnikovs and flash grenades. The story may still update and change.

A sad day for Belgium, and a horrifying experience for all those Christmas shoppers. Let's hope that the number of dead and wounded stays exactly where it is now. EDIT: it didn't :(

Shouldn't this be impossible? I mean, you aren't legally allowed to own guns and grenades in Belgium, are you?
I'm confused...
And, targetting Christmas shoppers?
That's pretty despicable. Not that targetting anyone innocent is ok, but jeez...

Maybe they had cheap political points for half off and someone else got the last one.

Oh my God. Two weeks ago I was in Champagne with my wife for the WE, having some fun and buying some Champagne for Christmas. We met belgians from Liège and they told us about The Big Christmas market of the city. I was thinking about going there with the kids for some Christmas shopping!!!!

more proof that banning guns does not stop the bad guys from owning guns.

More proof that you people don't realize that point is true and accepted, but irrelevant.

As always, please open a separate thread to discuss the more contentious issue of gun ownership.

It's a sad day, rip victims of this terrible gun-related attack.

It's not taking away, it's regulating, there's a difference.

Sometimes regulation = taking away
Sometimes it doesn't...

Since this guy had previous gun offenses... does anyone think he held his rifle, pistol and grenades legally?

Can't you guys think in more colours than black and white?

Banning guns does not complete remove crime involving guns, but it does reduce it. Where do you think most people get shot per capita? In the USA, or in some European country?
