Hags for the Calabim?

Okay this was an idea I first threw out in another thread, where it sank without trace.

For the Calabim, how about using Hags for their arcane line? I think it would be a good way to bring a D&D staple into FfH, and give the Calabim a little more personality to their appearance besides the vamps.

Any thoughts?

Depends. If you mean, go with a hag aesthetic, I fully support this. An interesting change from their usual vampiric form, and a good way to get some more dark and ugly in Erebusian vampires. But I disagree with a special race or differences between other magi, as that seems like overkill. It's SeZ's decision in the end regarding the art, though. But... again, it'd be something different. If SeZ is really cruel, he might end up doing hags wearing Svartalfar-level clothing.

Don't graphically nerf calabim! :crazyeye:

Actually I don't hate the idea at all, as long as it's visual and not mechanics-wise.

I was definitely thinking of it being asthetic, rather than mechanical. We (will) already have Lamias filling the "unique unit arcane line" slot*.

Couldn't be more eye-scouring than the night hag in my 3.5 Monster Manual

*I vaguely remember a rumour that Lamias would have a special ability when their graphics finally got released. Dunno if it was true though, and it was over a year ago.

uuurgh. I had something completely different in mind for the Calabim arcane line :crazyeye:
But, until I come to the point where they are on top of my to-do list, you have time to convince everyone (especially Kael) that this should be the way they look :p

(the ugly part of the calabim will be their recon line, so... spare their mages ;))

That was a freaky image linked to: I'd probably drop my Elven bow and head for the safety of the forests if I ran into that hag.

I really dislike this idea, sorry

isn't the whole point of vampires that they keep eternal youth?

I don't think anything old/withered/wrinkled would suit calabim at all. Even their vampire lords are handsome young men, visually. because they don't age.

Count me as a vote against this.

Ah well, I was just throwing an idea out in the hopes it caught yer imagination, if you already have a coherent plan for 'em, go with it :)

<AceVentura> Reheheaaally...<AceVentura>

Wierdly, a page or two on you have the NSFW Nymph...I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO FEEL NOW!

I like the idea of hags for Sheam in place of the mobius witch.

What I'd like to see is a harpy unit for them as well.

I don't see any relation between hags and Calabim.
I would join with others saying that, if it is to be added, it should be a Sheaim(or perhaps Orc(?)(Proposition influenced by the HOMM series)) unit.

...I like pretty female units a lot more than ugly female units... Maybe I'm shallow, maybe I just like those things that nymph is failing to hide, but that's how it is.

Though it is not unknown or outlandish for the Vampire's true soul to be revealed as horrible as that hag's exterior; so I wouldn't object to the hag on those grounds. They're just as plausible if not more.

If I think of Vampire the Masquerade ugly vampires for some paths aren't such a bad thing. Nosferatu IMHO are very fitting for the recon line and Tzimisce for the arcane line (IIRC Tzimisce are normally ugly but very beautiful if they have performed their fleshforming spells on others).

I prefer good looking vampires. If you make ugly units, dump them over to somebody else (not Svartalfar!).

Feh, "pretty vampires"

Seriously folks, the vampire as a hideous monster is a pretty strong archetype that's only recently been replaced by the vampire as a sex symbol. I really don't think all Calabim need to be willowy goth prettyboys (or prettygirls, for that matter).

I mean, take the attractive vampire thing too far, and what do you wind up with? Twilight, that's what. And I don't think anyone here wants vampires that sparkle :p

edit: Thunder Gr, I was thinking of the link between witches and vampires that's pretty strong in non-gothic fiction.

I do support the idea of hags for the Sheaim. The Mobius Witch always struck me as having a great deal in common with the Night Hag.

Preferences are what they are. I understand the current one for all the benefits of vampire mmortality including becoming good looking rather than the old-fashioned trade-off of benefits and costs [i.e., immortality vs. hideous appearance/habits].

Yet would it be so far off to have an aristocratic vampire "Hollywood" elite at the top of the hierarchy, with less attractive, less human types in the ranks to frighten the masses and the enemy.

But then, I've played less than a dozen Calabim games, they're not among my fav civs. So I've less set preferences.

It just seems that our unique and colorful races don't often generate their particular flavor: if I'm not to fear most vampires, then who am I to fear? Oh, yeah, the Sheaim!

Vampires in FfH should be very arrogant and narcissistic about their looks. The Brujah however are vampires that have gone feral, and wouldn't care about their looks nearly so much. It would make sense for them to be ugly. Heavy magic users would tend to be of the upper class and most civilized of the Calabim, so I'd suspect then to be more beautiful than most (although perhaps only though shadow magic illusions).

I'd support making Mobius witches look more like hags, but I'd rather they keep their current name and lore.

[CrazyIdea]Maybe it could be a transitive thing. It could go either way... maybe Calabim magi start out as ugly hags and, as they move up in the levels (and by extension, vampiric aristocracy), become better looking. Or maybe have them start out looking good and then start caring less about their appearance as they grow more powerful and, thus, more power-hungry.[/CrazyIdea]
