Halo Over-rated?

Halo is the biggest hit for XBox (and one of the reaons XBox is holding on), but how many of you think this game is severly over-rated?

Personally, everything that was done in the game has been done before elsewhere. There was nothing overly special about it, like Unreal Tournament and the alternate fire (which has been taken on by many games now), or Red Faction and the ability to blow a hole in anything.

The Covanent looked like crap, the only thing that looked like it could possibly kill you was the hunter, the rest just looked childish. Now the flood looked pretty awesome, I'll have to give them a thumbsup for that, but the covanent just looked like crap.

Anyway, the question is. Who else thinks Halo is over-rated?

Halo is in a similar situation to Final Fantasy 7, a lot of people think the game is God, while others think the game is severely overrated.

Personally, I'm not an FPS fan, so I don't like the game much, but I can see why others might. Although with everyone calling Halo 2 the game that will change the way of gaming, I have yet to see any major addition the sequel will bring other than different colored Master Chefs and dual wielding. If any Halo fans here care to enlighten me if I'm forgetting anything, I'm all ears.

Yes. I hear people talk of this game as the "perfect" game. There are few varieties in the enemies, the designs of the levels are repetitive (have I been in this room already?), and there is no option for a botmatch.
The ability to carry two weapons at a time was good, as it made you think what weapons to carry around with you (different than "I have all the guns" super soldiers on other games).

It's overated-it's a good game but repetitive and the enemies get boring, also theres no botmatche's although on pc you don't need this.

I think it a great game and kinda like the "Star" game for the X-Box, but it not ther best FPSer ever, Half-Life and Doom is. I think there are afew reasons people think it is over-rated. 1) They think too populary, 2) It from Mircosoft , and 3) They didn't like it. Now these are just what I THINK, not saying it is the real reasons.

Yep. I like both of those games, but I wouldn't call either of them God. Calling any game the best game ever is just ridiculous as you never know what might get released in the future.

it's a good game, but it has problems. First of all, Master Chief is too slow, and I think it's a tad too easy to snipe. The Single player level designs are crap, but the AI is good, and the enemies are hard once you get into the Hero or Legendary mode. In fact strider, hunters are very easy once you knwo how to beat them, elites and jackals are hard.

But the multiplayer is great. If you have ever has a LAN party with Halo, you know. It has some great maps and some bad ones, but it is pulled off excellently. I just was at one last week, and someone didn't show so my team had to be outnumbered and we still only lost one game, and I don't have Halo and everybody on the other team did!

Unreal Tournament wasn't the one inventing the alt-fire. It was Unreal first of the name, IIRC ^^

This question is a bit tricky. To answer it, you have to put things back in context :

1) Halo is kinda alone on X-box on the genre. It doesn't really have any competition. On top of that, it's still an excellent FPS. Add both, and you are for quite a lot of praise.

2) It was pushed back two or three years before coming on PC, and the adaptation was pathetic. So it doesn't give it justice : we judge an old, out-of-place and badly programmed game, instead of what it was like at the time.

3) The sceneries are awesome, and the possibility to have AI friends is extremely pleasant. At the time, it was really awesome.

4) There has been a huge hype over Halo, particularly all noise about the porting on PC.

All in all, I think that Halo, when it was released on X-box, was deserving the fame and the praises.
But what makes it looks like over-rated is the fact that it took several years to have it on PC, and the technology, gameplay and so on have evolved since.

I think it's over-rated also but I still love the game and have finnished it probably over 10 times on the top 3 hardest settings. It's over rated cause like people have said it isn't a true step up on the other FPS games, everything about the game is still on par with what you would think todays technology can provide. Smart AI? Bout time. New weapons.......well not really, you have every typical FPS gun. Only interesting thing about it is you can take shotgun in the Hog and still shoot.

Halo was originally meant to be on pc, many years ago. Microsoft bought out Bungie and shifted it's development to the XBOX from what I remember. I think they realised they needed a good launch title. ;)

Its a good game, VERY fun multiplayer game ( I've been to parties with 8-16 people simultaneously playing) but it is not all its cracked up to be.
What was 8 on 8 CTF like? I've played 4v4 alot, but never with 16. I'd imagine it is chaotic. I hope you didn't play on Blood Gulch, that level sucks.

I think Blood Gulch would be a lot more fun without the sniper. There are many other games out there that are fun. Watching my brother play Counter-Strike online looks to be very interesting. Lots of weapons and stuff to choose. I mean HALO is way too over-rated. So repetitive. Boring. Basically: If you are good or can actually present a challenge to the person playing against you, it's fun. If you get whipped, it's no fun.

We played 2 or 3 games of 8on8 CTF on sidewinder. It was quite fun, but it was impossible to live longer than 5 minutes since everyone was killing everyone else so rapidly in a quest to get the flag.

Overall a very fun experience :goodjob:

Halo is a great game, but there are many other great games on X-box too - I certainly wouldn't say that Xbox is just hanging on.

Now, Halo2 will allow many new features (firing two weapons simultaneously, wielding the energy sword, riding in the back of the warthog while an AI soldier drives, the ability to hijack a vehicle and throw the previous driver overboard in midflight, full MP mode via Xbox live, etc.). It's going to be bigger than big.

Ive played many 16 player games with my friends and can tell you that it truly shines in its MP, the SP action isn't anything special, but a 16 person FFA with a 5.1 surround sound with the bass cranked up is freakin' awesome!(throw in a digital projector that can make a 12' screen on a garage door and you have one hell of a evening :D )

Bah, Halo is definately overrated. At the moment, it's the only thing in my way from teaching the people of my school that civ3 is the greatest game ever, more addicting than anything else, and God's word incarnate. (OK, scartch the last one. :crazyeye: )

All of the "new editions" have been done in other games though. Halo2 is just stealing the idea's from others. Firing two weapons simultaneously has been around for a long time, before the first halo came out. Using melee weapons can be found in a quite many PC FPS's (I haven't seen a console FPS with this yet though). The "throw the previous driver overboard midflight" is taken from Grand Theft Auto.
