Halo Over-rated?

It sounds like you've listed a bunch of games that possess one or two of the features that Halo2 will have. Sure, Halo may be borrowing features found in other games, but do those other games have all of the features that Halo2 will have?

Truth be told, I could care less if anyone thinks Halo2 is overrated. But, it's probably going to be a great game and it's probably going to outsell many (if not all) of those games that you accuse it of stealing it's ideas from.

I doubt Halo 2 would outsell Unreal Tournament 2004 and Half-Life.

Firing two weapons simultaneously has been around for a long time, before the first halo came out. Using melee weapons can be found in a quite many PC FPS's
I've never really been into Halo so I haven't checked out the previews: how are the melee mechanics supposed to work (i.e. is it dual weapons firing parallel or separate control over each--that is, by switching between the two weapons).

No game has done the latter AFAIK.

The big thing in FPS games now is vehicles: the more stuff you can pilot the better. From what I can tell, players are also asking for more variety in terms of vehicles (i.e. things like mechs, multi-positional--does that sound dirty to you?--vehicles and new types of immobile weapons).

Where small arms are concerned, I think pretty much everything's been done without getting into outright fantasy.

BTW, is Halo moddable?

Actually, yes, Red Faction II for the PS2 allows you to hold two weapons at once, and have seperate fire for each (The left gun fires with the L1 button and the right gun fires with the R1 button).

Right, they fire in the same direction but you can fire each independently.

I was thinking about actually aiming each gun independently (i.e. switching between gun views--only the one being viewed fires).

I have yet to see a game that does this--thought for a moment I had finally found it.

Is Halo Overrated? Hate to go all Bill Clinton on you, but it depends on what you mean by "is." When Halo first came out, I thought it was the best looking FPS I had seen and its game mechanics were no worse than anything else ( I find FP games in general to be more awkward than 'camera' games). It has been a couple of years since then and I think it has been surpassed by a bunch of games both graphically and in terms of gameplay. It is repetitive (as many have said) and has limited replay value. But that is the case with any straight ahead shoot'em up type game. Even if the maps vary, you are still basically always doing the same two things, driving and shooting. IMHO such games compare unfavorably to a game such as GTA-VC, where the missions are less linear and there are many more things to do. Overall, Halo seems like one of those games where the designers tooka lot of time with the graphics and combat system, but then just threw the rest of the game (plot, maps, missions) together with little thought.

That'd be pretty hard to code I think.
Wouldn't it be just like switching between two positions in a vehicle (e.g. BF1942--gun remains pointed in the last direction you pointed it when you switch to another position)?

BTW, isn't there a 'series' that was created by some Halo players where they make stories using the game?

Red vs. Blue.

Red vs Blue is bloody hilarious, pure genius.

I'm curious as to why only Red Faction has employed the destructable enviroments engine and the shooting of duel guns with 2 different buttons. The whole blowing up of your PCs surroundings was practically revolutionary.

That's the one. I should really check out that show sometime.

How exactly does the engine blow things up (i.e. do they fall apart or is the explosion pre-set or what)?

Halo was a pretty good game. I liked the playability, and the action was pretty good. The one thing that struck me though was the music, Halo has the most amazing soundtrack out of any game, except Soul calibur 2.

the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. anyone who plays halo will hear the music down the hall and immediately be drawn towards it. it is unique and distinct. the story is great too. with all the hub-bub over the multiplayer facet of the game, the excellent campaign was widely overlooked.

Sometime I just love living in New Zealand. Actually I love living here anyway, but we're the first country in the world to get Halo 2. Microsoft are projecting onto a 73" screen at a nearby-ish launch party. Pity I'm not going eh? :)

Sigh, I may be attacked for this but halo is possibly the single most overated game in history, seriously, I would take the original unreal tournament over it any day, and I'm not even that big of a fan of unreal tournament.

Its basically a bunch of arcadey, actiony, special effects-ey. eye candy, like watching the matrix sequels, nice special effects, some decent other things, but almost nothing new, and most of the stuff thats close has been done FAR better in other things.

My thought about halos success is that its THE game to have for the XBOX, its hyped by the giant microsoft, and it is not a BAD shooter for the console, and the console has almost never done a decent shooter. Maybe its "stunning" for all those beer n' pretzels, tv, after school gaming teen, but to anyone who has been around PC games for quite a while, its just not that much new. Computer games have had great (and better) graphics, computer games have had great (and better) gameplay, computer games have had great(and better) sound FX and musical score.

In my opinion, decent as a general overall game, good for a console game (which tend to be total arcadey action crap ALL the time) and great if you have never been in with the greats of real serious gaming on the PC.

I don't know, maybe I'm being a little to hard on it, but it kinda symbolizes all the things that have made me angry with consoles, how people say gaming is "moving" over to consoles, when they still don't have a single really could strategy game (the creme of the crop of gaming IMHO) and the large scale developers attempts to appeal to the all important "arcade" gamer, it just kinda annoys me.

Tried Halo 2 the other day, I hated it.

I played it the other day, and I have the same view. It was far to easy, and it looks like it's made for abunch of 10 year olds. Cartoonish graphics, etc. It looks like something Disney would promote!

Also, you would think they'd add SOMETHING new inside of the second one. Halo 2 is the exact same thing as the first game.
