HAM-01: The Hanseatic League

Well we can afford a forge before a market at Lubeck, but yes market is important. We could do with another worker or two to take advantage or serfdom when we get it. Hopefully we can whip a granary and forge in our cities before we go to serfdom.

I used to be in the transportation business. (intl) and Hansa was a big shipping line specializing in heavy machinery/bulk ships.

Turn 1

We meet Isabella and she's annoyed with us being confucianist.
move explorer to find some more.

Civ4ScreenShot0649.jpg

Turn 2 -5

zzzzzzzzzz

Turn 6

Worker finishes wheat start on the iron for production.

Turn 7

Lubeck finishes granary. Start a worker as we need some more.

Turn 8

Move explorer through the trees. (oh we go wandering with a napsack on our back la la la)

Turn 9

We meet George Washington and he has no religon. (Knowing Isabella, she will get him to confucianism real soon)
Danzig finishes granary start settler. (we need to expand early as Isabella is bad for spawning as well as GW)

I was tempted to build lib to speed up science since feudalism is moving slowly. It seems that it stuck on 55 for several turns???

Was also considering market in either but not much commerce yet so I thought best to develop tile infrastructure and expansion. Was also considering forge but we can do that quicker with a couple workers working the land to allow building the forge faster.

Civ4ScreenShot0650.jpg

Turn 10

Das ist alles.........(PS both cities are too small for whipping yet but once we get those resources hooked up at Lubeck we should be able to.)

I think we should spam workers to get our economy up to snuff.

Even if we end up with workers with nothing to do, it's really only for a few turns. Once we have at least one per city switch to military....hard!

This should give us a good base to found our trading guild, and give us us our protection that we doubtless will need at the crux.

Of course the going backwards on this is fine too. The main point is needing to work the land and not to lose anything that we produced, so take this at a turn by turn basis (if you take it all).

10 turns are very quick at this stage of the game.

On turn 2 I whipped the worker at Lubeck for 1 pop.

Turn 3 Washington asked open borders, I agreed. Lubeck started on a forge to amplify future whippings.

Turn 5 we met everyone's favourite trading partner, Tokugawa.

On turn 8 our settler completed, with the capital's archer having found a nice site for our third city. The capital started an axeman because some barbs will be showing up soon.

Turn 9 a barb axe appears.

Turn 10 the barb axe disappears - they are probably still in their "I won't attack a city" phase. Our settler is in position to settle next turn:

I found that too Soooo, it goes very fast 10 turns at this stage of the game.

I got it ...

Er ... no wait. ...

Actually, I got it, and have actually played

Seems like I got myself a city to settler ... that's a duanting task! That means I must go do some research to find a suitable name for the Hanseatic League instead of the usual more familiar Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich series that Civ4 gives ... this for someone who'd never heard of Hanseaic League before he signed up ... no wonder my moma used to say "look before you leap".

Anyway, 10 minutes of wikipedia search solves the problem:

hans-AD0200-visby.jpg

was contemplated on hurrying the workers along to build road and then this message appear:

hans-AD0200-connected.jpg

Really? Got to love the sea route! ... and mister computer ... go learn how to compute, will you? That's our second city outside the capital!

Then, it seems nobody heed the advice of Mr Hamtastic ... I looked hard at the civics screen, and city screen of Lubeck ... OR gives only 1 hammer benefit ... hmm ... And seeing that every AI has a dark blue face, I think I'll take two turns of revolution for the benefit of the League.

So, revolt out of the OR:

[Imagine a pciture of the Civics Screen with OR un-highlighted and Paganism highlighted ... there, I did it, I described a picture with far less than a thousand words]

and then next turn, revolt out of state religion:

hans-AD0225-revolt-no-state.jpg

Now, everybody is white-faced.

Speaking of which, we met Mr Khan:

hans-AD0275-mongo.jpg

who promptly signed an OB with us some years later.

This is the League at its present development

hans-AD0425-league.jpg

And this is the other side of the world/lake/land-in-lake/whatever: :crazyeye:

hans-AD0425-world.jpg

and one thing I find it strange is I have clearly circumnavigated the map ... is there no such bonus in a lake map?

>>> The Save 425AD <<<

Lookin' good. I think Visby should be fine - they did do some trading there, so I wouldn't worry about it. Our third city site is quite nice - maybe we should even consider turning it into the GP farm? I didn't do any math on it though, so I'm not really sure about it.

Roster:

1. Hamtastic
2. Cosmichail
3. Sooooo
4. Greyfox (done)
5. Baru (up!)
6. Pigswill (gettin' ready)

Got it and will do my best to play tonight.
As I am still new to these...any ideas on what I should try and acclomplish?
Any suggestions on where to settle next? I was thinking of the square just south of the rice in the NW corner as that will be automatically connected by the coast.

And here we go ( the Arrogant Bastard Ale is kickin' in now (( started halfway through so no comments)) please excuse any mistypes)

450 AD) Taoism FIDL...We should have a very mixed land/lake mass so maybe keep on going in the middle until someone emerges as the "spreader"...yes it is most likely going to be Isabella.
I move the Axe in the middle territory to check out the feasability of the silk site.

But then should I have moved to the north?

Civ4ScreenShot0000.JPG

The explore men encounter some not so friendly natives...in fact those edges look less, and less, after careful scrutiny for chopping trees than necks. After a heated debate involving the parental units possesing the qualities of a possumn and at one point a muskrat, the brave men decide to run..as this is the most likely place to find......dosen't matter at least it is not a sharp cutting edge.

-switch sellter to axe in Lubeck

475 AD) The barb action is staring to get haevy in the north so I move the Axeman in Danzig to our Swedish speaking city to the north:cool:

500 AD) The Axemen heading south to check if the Silk is in a viable city location checks it out...not looking very good yet.
Barbs in the north retreat. Still on standby but I am seriously getting worried with their constant persistance.
Workers are all still busy building us the money mines (cottages).

520 AD) Explorer does what they do.
The barbs hangin' about Visby continue to do so....I'm thinking they are taking "union break"

Sadly the southern silk city is looking like a horrible place.....for even an igloo.

Oh and we got barb archers popping in the SW. Now it gets fun, nothing like the ignorant to kill:shifty:

540 AD) We get more killing edges in Danzig in replacement for the one we sent to Visby.

Still hoping for the beaver in the south (no pun intended) sadly, there is a lock on the fields of promise (pun intended), Ice Cold.

560 AD) Judaism is FIDL, then quickly spreads to Danzig.....I think they should change their riffs to a more chant friendly format.
Explorer does what he was made to do and (after losing the barbs by running around a mountain) decides to check the scope of the inland sea.

Continue.

It's getting to the end and all of a sudden the temp rises.................
Anyone else get the impression that she has Ho-Ho's stuck to the temples?

Civ4ScreenShot0010.JPG

Also the Barbs finally enter the borders of the trading guild.
I expected this and had an axe ready, not waiting though, to cut them off.

OMG! I think we just killed Peter Pan!

Civ4ScreenShot0015.JPG

Oh, and there is two warriors standing, probably taking a smoke break, outside the borders of Visby. Not a problem since we have no improved resouces there as of yet.

600 AD) Many barbs are killed! And we Pray for their souls....oh wait we don't, I think we would do some chanting and maybe a dance for their souls..anyway we hope they enjoy where they are.

Hey now speaking of beliefs!

Civ4ScreenShot0017.JPG

Plus he is exploring with the most effective unit:lol:

Civ4ScreenShot0021.JPG

Alright so we are going way long but I'm having fun.

620 AD) We got settler power in Lubeck, I'm leaving these brave souls to another person, plus I do like having one in the wings.
The axeman in the south is running from a barb swordsmen, he's hurt (yes I forgot for a turn and didn't heal) and will have little chance to stand and fight, so keep him runnin', I like that guy. Good People.

The last of the epic ten turns; 640 AD:

Our explorer gets cut off from checking out the lake by silicone lips (Catherine) but there might be a passage to the NW.

I think The Colossus is due in three...pretty sure we got it now and I'm sorry if it dosen't work out. Hell we'll get cashy anyhow so we could run at 100 for awhile, or invest it in the 401K.

Northern territory soon to be taken by Catherine.
Civ4ScreenShot0029.JPG

Power graph not looking promising BTW.

Got it. Should be able to play this evening.

Thinking about possible city sites: there's banana/pig/rice near Visby, iron sw of capital or rice/clams on peninsula.

Looked through the posts and looked at the save and thought to myself its time to expand before we start getting hemmed in. So I went for settlers thinking once cities are in place we can get workers to develop them; research will take a hit to start with but we'll catch up soon enough with more cities. Good plan. This is what happened.

640. zzz (move settler and axe to south west iron)

660 Open borders with Isabella (keep them moving)

680
Found Rostock near sw iron.
Lubeck builds axe, starts settler.
Research 70%.

700.
Build Colossus in Danzig.
Danzig starts settler.
Move workers to iron mine at Rostock, move axe for protection.
GK asks us to stop trading with GW, declined.

720.
Discover Feudalism. Start Machinery.
Revolt to Vassalage, stay in slavery for now to whip improvements.
GK cancels open borders.

740.
Explorer killed by barb sword inside Russian territory! Whatever happened to hospitality?

760. Two barb swords head to Rostock and iron miners.

780. Barbs get closer.Keep mining.

800
Barb sword kills axeman (darned RNG); captures two workers:eek:
Should have moved them into city for (slightly) more protection
We have no workers at present

820.
Barb sword attacks Rostov and dies.
Barb sword pillages iron mine.
Lubeck builds settler, starts longbow.

840.
Whip granary in Visby.

This is where we're at.

Leaguemap840ad0000.jpg

This is also where we're at.
