Augustus hears that a Chinese general raided a Roman village. A messenger from China explains that the Chinese general was rogue and gives Rome lots of money as compensation, but Augustus uses the incident as an excuse to declare war on China.

How do you think the war might turn out based on your knowledge?

The first problem that comes to mind is the fact that both armies would have to traverse hundreds of kilometers of hostile territory to reach the others' border, which additionally means that the supply lines are so long that both armies would starve to death before meeting each other.

Then there's the question of why they'd want to mobilize so many resources to fight a war with absolutely nothing to gain, against nations that were probably moreso characterized to each other by bizarre trade gossip than actual intelligence.

Also, counter-factuals suck to begin with.

How did a Chinese army get all the way over too Rome? Either it goes through India or through the desert that even Alexander was scared of. Then it has to make its way through the Parthians who used the same basic tactics then as the Turks who later crushed the Tang expeditionary force. So, Chinese army is dead.
Furthermore, why would the soldiers follow him? Even Alexanders soldiers forced him back. And that was Alexander. Not some unnamed chinese dude.
