Handy 23 Random AWE

Subscribing to this one. It's always fun to watch you guys play. :)

Pre-flight – Play out Obormot’s turn.

We have zero gold, so I lower science.
Switch Rome to a settler for more money.

Early – That isn’t coastline to the north. Found Veii on the coast.
Rome: settler=>archer=>settler
BW=>IW at minimum.

Middle: Rome: archer=>settler

Late:

Roster check:

1. Obormot
2. Sir Bugsy- just played
3. M60A3TTS - up
4. Northern Pike – on deck
5. ThERat
6. Greebley
7. Handy

I know, Veii isn't three tiles from Rome. I just couldn't pass up getting those whales on expansion for a tundra city.

No using F10 or any other way to find out civs before meeting them.
No initial trade - declare war immediately.
No looking at techs, cities, resources, etc in deals unless we have a spy planted with that civ.

The three hill sites look good with the river site the best of all.

lurker's comment: Are you planning to build the GLib? I think the only way to make this the slightest challenge for you guys is to have a no GL rule. That start is almost as good as the one you beat standard pangaea with on deity :crazyeye: .
I think we decided that... no Great Library

2510BC- Science to 40%, IW in 35.

2430BC- Spot a barb camp

2350BC- Antium founded

2270BC- Portugal shows a conscript warrior and 2 reg warriors in the east, and two barb warriors appear behind them. You think they had a MPP or something. Back off our archer on patrol. During the IBT, the Portugese kill off the two BWs.

2190BC- Archer scout trips 3 unhappy BWs from GH. :(

2150BC- Get a settler from Rome, I will leave him unmoved for next up.

Done. IW in 11. Our archer in the east is being trailed by the Portugese troops, but no real threat at this point. Plenty of room to expand. :D

The AI is to the NW and NE of us, I would settle in that direction for now, We can back fill the south later. Perhaps there is a narrow choke are up there somewhere.

2150 (0): Whoa, that's a lot of exploring for 2150 BC in AW. :eek: We've gotten away with it, but I won't do any more.

We seem to have a lot of room, we're under no pressure--the conditions are right for a granary build in the settler pump, and I'll make that my main goal this round.

I'll try to get a barracks built immediately in Antium, too.

I'm able to boost the science rate to 90%.

One of our archers defeats the attack of a Scythian warrior (1-0).

Veii worker --> barracks.

2070 (2): Two Portuguese warriors come into view--no big deal, but we may have to delay the founding of our next city a little.

1950 (5): A potentially unpleasant convergence of Portuguese and barb warriors on Antium comes to nothing when they attack each other. :lol:

1910 (6): We shoot down a depleted barb warrior, and our archer promotes to elite (2-0).

1870 (7): Antium barracks --> spearman.

1830 (8): We found Cumae SE of Antium. This is only a semi-aggressive foundation, but the city will be productive immediately.

Rome granary --> settler.

Iron Working --> Masonry.

We have iron within Rome's city radius. Yes, this one may be proving a little too easy. ;)

1750 (10): Three Portuguese warriors move next to Cumae.

Have you gentlemen developed an orthodoxy for whether Masonry-Mathematics or Wheel-HBR should come first in AW? I've chosen the former because I want our dirt-cheap walls, but we can still change at the cost of one turn's research.

Cumae is well garrisoned, and the Portuguese warriors there shouldn't be much of a problem.

If the next player feels it would be premature to found our fifth city, Rome's settler build can be changed to a worker.

We should start thinking about the timing of our GA. We can probably avoid using Legionaries for a while if that's what we want.

Unless playing the Iroquois, I believe the former is preferred.
