Hangs during Infogrames splash screen

I am playing with the 1.16f2 patch, no mods or anything else. The machine is admittedly low-end (PII 440MHz, 128MB RAM, Windows 98) but has been coping quite well since December.

It used to occasionally hang during the Infogrames splash screen either just before the logo appeared or just after. However over the last week it seems to be occuring between 50-66% of the time. Doing a Ctrl-Alt-Delete shows that Civ III is not responding and there is another task ~f(blah blah) [I will fill in blah blah next time when I remember to write it down, my assumption is that it is the task for the splash screen).

The major point apart from this happening at all, which is bad, is that it is now occurring a lot more regularly. Doesn't matter if I start via open/closing the CD drive, menu or shortcut.

Once I get past the Infogrames splash screen everything works fine and the game runs well.

The problem being I have to reboot if it hangs on the splash screen which gets rather tedious if it happens 3 times in a row!

Anyone else having this sort of problem or have any ideas?

Thanks

I'd just like to say i have the EXACT same problem, it used to hang maybe 25% of the time after the splash screen, and i get the same programs showing up in the dialog box, etc etc etc. Now, i tried loading up Civ III 14 times ina row, even after a full re-installation, and no luck.

"I start the game and it crashes to the desktop either on one of the splash screens, or before it gets to the pre-game movies."

One of the resolutions offfered is:

Turn off the movies. All of the other requirements in this list must be accomplished before this will fix the problem. You can turn off the movies by going into the Civilization III folder on your hard drive and deleting the Movies folder.

Actually from memory the Movies folder is in the Art folder of Civilization III, but the main point is that this actually works.

The games starts without hanging and the extra bonus - No start up movies !!!
