Happiness Balance Discussion

I don't understand how the happiness formula works tbh but is it possible to simply increase the base amount of unhappiness from a yield deficiency? Like if you're lacking say .5 culture per citizen, instead of getting 1 unhappiness, you get two?

I don't think we'll need any of that, or any of this thread, as I found a bug caused by my staticizing (see above). I think this is a solved problem.

In the process of 'staticizing' unhappiness yields I left a critical element of the pop-based scaler out. Essentially, it's barely scaling off of pop right now. I'm going to hotfix, but it's going to hurt a bit at first.

I downloaded the latest build you have but I am struggling with distress and I have all the latest buildings I can have to stop it. Armories, etc.

If anyone can give any advice I would appreciate it. Really hoping to finish a game and win, but I am still trying to learn it too.

My game crashes when I try to load your game. Sure it is the last patch 11-21-3? Anyways, it is the turn 0 savegame, so not too much we can say about it.

For general advice, check my guide.

Just my opinion, but please don't swing this too far in the other direction. Unhappiness should be the punishment for expanding too wide without building proper infrastructure first. It's a good tool to keep a single civ from running away with an early lead. Sometimes this mod has a history with being too brutal with unrecoverable unhappiness. I would rather we didn't return to that state.

Also, please be-careful with playing with the puppet city setup. Honestly, it wouldn't take much to make them pointless. It doesn't take much for a full city with a court house to generate more research and culture than you "lose" for number of cities. The fact that you can't make them build city defences is already a large punishment that leaves them open to being retaken. I personally wouldn't touch them.

Oh, I hope this is the thing I've been having trouble with this game. I'll be at 7 happiness one turn, the next at 33 unhapinness. It goes back and forth but it's been a nightmare for the last twenty to thirty turns or so. I just can't keep the cities content with the infrastructure I've got despite having almost every tile developed, all the buildings finished, etc. Every city still has six to seven unhappiness at best :\

I have exactly the same problem- distress is simply not possible to manage. Getting 6/7 distress unhappiness from 10 pop cities while having barracks line buildings, production buildings and tile improvements all set up. I've played games on Emperor on BNW and I can't handle distress from 5 cities between 7- 12 pop on Warlord. I love tha changes in this mod, but as for now it is unplayable for me- unless I am missing something HUGE.

Ok I'm glad it isn't just me. Thanks for being able to articulate exactly what happened to me. The last 3 builds of VP I had, as long as I had my barracks up, I had no problems whatsoever and distress was managable. Now that number, hardly if not at all, will not change.

Pretty much this - in my current game I just finished getting constabularies which specifically say they'll lower distress, but it knocked maybe 1 off of a total of 6 per city, and even that wasn't guaranteed for all of them. I've got every city set on production, almost every tile upgraded, and everything set to gold, culture, or science production just to lower other unhappiness causes and it's still not enough. Not quite sure what else I can do.

Distress exist because you have an imbalance of food and production which means building workshop-like and aqueduct-like buildings will reduce Distress indirectly.

Yes, I've heard. The problem is that this is not reducing distress - I have every building built I can build in each city and it hasn't brought down the unhappiness.

Can you show us a screenshot of what buildings you have left to build, and the tooltip for the distress yields so we can see the degree your dealing with

Actually even better if you post a saved game we can take a look

Okay, I've looked through my files and I can't find the save folder for modded saves. Is there a thread explaining how to pull up save files I can refer to?
Go to mod folder, under documents/games.
Look for a folder named moddedsaves, then another folder name single.
In the post options, you are allowed to upload a file, tell it the path to your savegame.

Not the same guy, but it seems like we have the same problem so...

Distress vaule to meet should be (food+prod)/ pop shouldn't it? Because if so, the calculation in- game is way off.
