Why is it 90% of Hollywood movies have to have happy endings?

Most recently I watched a jewel of a movie - "Simone" starring Al Pacino. Naturally, they had to ruin it near the end and turn it into a sobby happy-make-up-thingy. Doesn't it get boring some times?

Sadly outside the theatre, it is not the case!

What do you mean? Every day ends pretty happy for me.

The have happy endings because that what the people want. Before any movie is released it undergoes the evils of a focus group. Because of this and sales results more and more movies have happy endings. But it isn't something to worry about this, as most of the movies that have happy endings are not worth watching in the first place. On the other hand, most movies that are truely great have sad endings.

That's right, just like the great Greek tragedies.
The happy endings are because it leaves you satisfied, and that's what most people who watch a movie want.

There have been a couple movies I've seen that have sad or depressing endings, but I've noticed that these movies are some of the ones that I've found most moving - and enjoyable, but in a sobering way.

Audiences like to feel closure. A sad ending only leaves them hanging.

People don't have to die for it to be a sad ending. But death equal action movie so go for it .

I like movies with "mixed" endings. LOTR was good as a book because of the scenes at Grey Haven and the Scouring of the Shire, which made it clear that things could never go back to the way they were before. Also, I once saw a good Italian movie [La vita e bella?] about the Holocaust in which the main character died, but his son escaped. It was a lot more realistic - and thoughtful - than if they'd been rescued or escaped or done something else Disney-style
