Hardy Heron comes out in a couple of days. Has anyone looked at it yet? Anyone going to go for it? I have it on my system, it downloaded perfectly, installed very easily. Got Compiz Fusion working without even installing xgl. Was able to get emusic's download manager to work for me as well. Only thing that I haven't been able to get solved yet is the driver to my Creative Sound Blaster XFi Extreme Gamer sound card.

But, in my opinion, the default desktop has just got to go. Never could stand that Ubuntu brown. I have trouble relating it to coffee. Which brings me to a question. Is anyone here skilled with Compiz configuration? For instance, I have a very nice cube going, with a nice reflection as well, but I would like to be able to set a different background behind that cube.

I tried to get the beta working but my computer hates Ubuntu and GRUB for some reason. Even using Wubi didnt help. If at some point I decide to pull my old machine out and dust it off, ill probly install it on there, but so far I've got nada.

As for Compiz config, you could ask croxis or vbraun. I think they know it pretty well, although you'd have to ask them to find out.

I ran it for a little while I like it and once it's officially released I'll be using it instead of gutsy gibbon. Since this is there LTS hardy should be fairly solid and stable.

3 more days and counting.

Padma -- I tried to install that driver, but didn't have any luck. Still too darn inexperienced with Linux. But, I no longer have windows on my machine at all. :) I am running Hardy Heron release candidate version. Everything but the XFi sound card is working really well. Compiz even worked without having xgl. I needed xgl in Gutsy. I got rid of the brown too. I think that I like Gnome better than KDE as well. Took some getting used to though. Gnome just seems to run faster and consume less resources. Prior to Hardy Heron, I had Suse 10.3. I got everything working in it as well but it was a struggle. Could not get Dream Linux to work well at all at anytime. Sabayon wouldn't boot either.

Ooh. I might have to get this. Right now I'm running something much older.

I'm running Kubuntu Hardy as well, and it all looks fine. There were some problems with ATI graphics in the beta version, but they're fixed now.

BTW, if you hate Gnome brown, why not try KDE blue?

It's the Ubuntu brown that I don't like. But I fixed that. I went out and got a different background and installed a different theme as well. I have found that Gnome seems to run better on my machine than KDE though. I tried KDE 4 and didn't even like that too much either. Actually I should say only parts of KDE 4. Open Suse 10.3 had incorporated parts of KDE 4 into their latest release. The only distro that has KDE that works well is PCLinuxOS, and I might even go back to that when Tex comes out with a new version. I never thought that I would go back to Ubuntu, but this Hardy Heron is really nice so far. Especially since I got rid of the brown.

I've always heard that Canonical treats kubuntu like a red headed step child. when I tried the kubuntu beta with kde 4 it didn't have anything but an empty desktop. Have they done anything about that?

That's kinda true. Ubuntu is (supposedly) their baby, and the others are byproducts.

KDE4 deals with desktop icons in a different way than kde3/windows/anything else. They're widgets, not files, and that's why there were problems with transition. It's worth noting that KDE4 is not really finished yet, that's why they're offering the 3.5.9 version as well.

Upgraded from Dapper Drake to Hardy Heron last night with only some minor issues because I'd used Automatix to install the latest nVidia drivers in Dapper Drake. Easily solved by installing nvidia-settings thru Synaptic. Most important is BtS feels like it runs better now using Cedega. :p

I tested the gear prior to upgrading using the LiveCD and the whole process took about 2 hours.

Keep in mind that the more vendor related your gear is the less likely it can run not only Ubuntu but most distros well. In other words a desktop PC with common components is much more likely to run a distro well than a strongly branded laptop.

I'm fixin' to take a look at Kbuntu Hardy Heron with KDE 4 in a few minutes, soon as my iso gets burned.

let me know if it has anything on the desktop like i said when i tried the beta it was nothing but a background image.

It took a while to come up from the live CD. Eventually it booted and ran without a hitch.
The install went very well. KDE 4 will take some getting used to. I'm still pretty inexperienced with Linux, so this should not be that big of a deal. As long as my system doesn't break, I think I will try to live with this install for a while. Everything looks very slick. And the nice thing about Kbuntu is that it doesn't have that um, brown look that traditional Ubuntu has. Not sure whether I want to continue with Konqueror as a web browser though, will have to see if I can get used to it.

I've got Hardy installed on my external hard disk and I like it, I especially like compiz fusion (I know 7.10 had that aswell, but I never had that version) Unfortantly wine doesn't work.
