I like to think Harmony factions treats the colonizing of new planets as they are and not treating It as 'only' 6000 years old.

um nothing to do with human evolution there... after all, Purity human evolution believers recognize that humans also are not 'only' 6000 years old, and since humans got to this planet humans should be the one respected more than the planet.

(And supremacy can recognize that even though humans and the planet aren't 'only' 6000 years old, humans need something more dependable... ie their own technology)

Actually what Harmony is doing has nothing to do with evolution either. Purposefully splicing other lifeforms genetic material into humans and artificially creating survival traits has nothing to do with gradual and lenghty process of promoting incredibly rare mutations that are both beneficent and hereditary. It also ignores the natural selection in lieu of forcing humans to adapt, thus removing the main mechanism directing evolution.

But the above isn't really relevant. Rambling tone and random insertion of creationism in the OP's post smell of trolling to me.

Yeah, genetic engineering isn't natural selection.

Umm... all affinities modify humanity to one degree or another; the difference is to what to degree and what direction. And unless they have no plan these modifications are not random. In fact, all three affinities are kind of slapping natural selection in the face and than kicking it out of the equation entirely.

supremacy is the only faction to embrace human evolution, by transferring your mind into computer/database; human evolution will jump to the next level. You can still have an body created by the harmony faction, all you need is to "download" your mind into that body, or you can experience that body in a virtual environment, or use that body via remote control (mind still in database but you feel what that body feel). The choices are limitless.

I dont understand OP. Or where that's coming from.

I'm guessing from the evolution/creationism debate. Even being someone from a very catholic country in Europe its hard for me to fathom how people could belive in such nonsense as creationism, but i think in the USA the topic is not that clear cut at all. :crazyeye:

I think all of the factions basically belive in the science of the evolutionary theory, no matter what affinity they choose. Then again that would not mean that they had to wait for evolution, a very slow process to happen. Active thought can yield better improvements much faster, than blind evolution would. So all factions effectively sidestep the evolutionary process through genetic engineering, genetic grafting or mechanical/cybernetic augmentation.

If I understand right and cut out the 6000 years old part, OP sound like he's talking about Purity. Colonize the planet as human+ (human-plus) are. The self-genetic modification sound like creationism, although whether is it happened in 6000 years ago is another question

BTW, I really wonder how anyone would treat himself if he "is" 6000-years-old created sentient specie.

In fact, the self-driven evolution of mankind is the very point of the affinities, they're all answers to the question "how will humanity evolve?" (in the colloquial sense of "evolution" instead of "theory of evolution").

There is still evolution at work there, but its a memetic evolution, a natural selection of ideas rather than a genetic one. Since colonies are somehow isolated from another, they form islands in which different ideas can rise to the top and propagate, leading to the different affinities. Its comparable to the genetic mutation in tidal pools or on isolated island (Darwins Galapagos). It would be more evident if we were talking about different planets the colonists would settle on.

Imagine the supremacy faction opening the Warp Gate to earth and an energy being sticks out his head leaning in from the other side: "thanks mate, we appeciate the gesture, comming to rescue us from ressource scarcity and all, but somewhere in the last 800 years it took you to get you this far, we learned how to transcend our corporeal forms through meditation and ascend. We could try to teach you, if you'd like, but we are not sure if uploaded beings are even able to meditate that way".

This thread has the ability to blow up in all sorts of... interesting... ways, but I just wanted to say that TPangolin's post was freaking hilarious.

Evolution is a fact, not a moral imperative.

Whether it's true is a clear scientific fact. Whether we should allow it to continue on its course without modification is a values choice.

Because in the end evolution doesn't care about you or your life - just if you end up reproducing. It doesn't care if you live a life of hardship and suffering if you manage to plop one out or if you have a fantastic life but don't breed. There is no reason to believe that allowing evolution to continue to act on humanity will necessarily lead to a better future - as such we might want to consider taking control of our own destiny with genetic engineering, bionic implants, nanotechnology, etc.

Of course the Harmony affinity isn't about letting evolution take its course at all, if anything that's Purity, they're trying to intervene in the process with genetic engineering.

that's not evolution, either.

yeah, but that's kind of a moot point because they all do that.

It's also a moot* point in that none of them do true biological evolution either

Mutation, natural selection, genetic drift are all replaced by genetic engineering (so cultural evolution rather than biological evolution)

*Yes I know moot technically means debatable... however this is English, the actual usage meaning will make the 'technical' official one moot.
