Has the combat AI improved?

Monty still thinks this is Vanilla Civ 5

I'm surprised considering he DID spam out cats/trebs early on when he DOWed me, and then when I was working my way into his core cities, he even popped in a cannon or two too.

I have found the AI to be better with one exception, they are back to rushing SAM's!

My biggest foe in a large 10 AI game did the entire Citidel bit which was pretty cool and then massed 10-12 SAM's and did an infantry assault with them. These SAMS are unrealistically hard to kill and shouldn't be because in real life SAMs are guarded by light infantry and should in no way be considered a land threat. Firaxis should nerf the unit accordingly so the AI doesn't build zillions of them instead of infantry.

On a brighter note, I haven't witnessed the aircraft carrier rush as of yet, but I have witnessed 1 aircraft carrier with a 3 destroyer escort which is pretty darn cool. And, the aircraft carrier actually had planes on it!:goodjob:

I've seen aircraft carriers staffed with fighters/bombers/ATOMIC BOMBS in the original CiV, but they now come with escorts too?!

This is something fantastic!

I'd say they have. Early game, I had settled Utrecht a bit too close to Stockholm. Six turns later, two catapults, four spearmen and four composite bowmen were surrounding the city...I never did stand a chance there.

To be fair though - between him having Great Wall and Himeji, and attempting to make me outstretch myself as I pushed deeper into his lands, this might have been the best fight Monty ever gave me.

If it wasn't for the new naval mechanics, taking his capital city would have taken ages.

Civ5 now makes a distinction between "promotions" and "unit abilities". Promotions carry over when you upgrade a unit, unit abilities do not. Negative effects are always unit abilities and don't carry over, as is anything that adds a fixed number to a unit's base strength. The battering ram's melee penalty and "can only attack cities" are unit abilities and don't carry over when they are upgraded. They upgrade into plain, but well-promoted, trebs.
So, for example, Minutemen upgraded to Riflemen will not keep the "ignore terrain" bonus? What about the "rough terrain +1" (forgot actual name) bonus?

I think Calouste mixed it up. All positive unit abilities & promotions carry over when upgraded, the red negative promotions do not carry over. Also a sheer increase in strength or movement without any promo associated won't carry over. So for example Cataphract's extra 3 strength won't carry over to knights but Jaguar's auto heal after kill & bonus in forests/jungles would carry over when upgraded.
