I think a large part of the invite process continuing as long as it has is to avoid a bunch of dead accounts/spam accounts right off the bat. Obviously the spammers have found their way in but it's still rather controlled and at least it gave people the opportunity to get the addresses they wanted before some computer from deleware comes through after opening and registers every word in the dictionary.

Looks like waiting for Opera 8 may not be necessary: Gmail is now letting you log in with Opera 7.54.

No need yet. But I suppose, from what I ve read, that it is better on the margin than the most common alternatives. In which case, it would be a good third email account, should I ever need one

I've been using the gmail service for quite a while now and I'm very satisfied with it. It's fast, has many options, it has a great support team and it's from google. What do want more? I've got 50 invites to give away so if anyone is interested pm me.
